Chiles boys and Maclay girls victors at Warrior Rampage

Runners gotta run. Marianna High School was forced to cancel the 25th annual Panhandle Cross Country Championships on 18 October 2014, but there was no way that the harriers of Northwest Florida were going to skip racing less than two weeks before the district round of the state tournament. With Marianna no longer an option, many teams traveled to Monticello, Florida, for Aucilla Christian Academy's Warrior Cross-Country Rampage. Chiles senior Jacob Kemp won the boys' 5K race in 17:25, leading his team to a winning score of 35 points. Wakulla sophomore Haleigh Martin ran 19:48 to win the girls' 5K, but it was Maclay that took the team title, scoring 25 points. Maclay also excelled in the middle school boys' competition, with where Marauder eighth-grader Clayburn Milford ran a winning 11:24 while his team scored 18 points for the win. Running unattached, Deerlake's Lawton Campbell won the middle school girls' race in 12:49, and Holy Comforter took the team title with a perfect 15-point score.


Aucilla Christian hosted the races on the ground of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences extension office, a little piece of the University of Florida in Jefferson County, just west of Monticello. The boy's Varsity 1 race was first on the schedule, starting between rows of pecan trees at 8:30 AM. As the leaders sprinted out of the orchard and through a swamp-creek forest, Jacob Kemp of Chiles was well back in the pack. Kemp was where he needed to be, though, and by the mile mark he was out in front, with teammate Aric Hawkins right off his shoulder. At two miles Kemp had opened up a gap. Hawkins was still running in second, and Chiles frosh Matt Newland had moved up into third. Two Maclay runners, sophomore Jake Mazziotta and junior George Gwynn, were right behind Newland.


Kemp maintained his lead over the hilly final mile of the race, scooting home a winner in 17:24. Newland edged Mazziotta for the next spot, 17:30 to 17:32. Behind them, Maclay's Gwynn outfought Wakulla sophomore Bryce Cole 17:39 to 17:40.


There was another section of the race yet to run, though--the boys' Varsity 2 5K at 9:30 AM. Aucilla Christian sophomore Gatlin Nennstiel broke free of the field during the first mile, then ran the rest of the race solo, pushing himself to a 17:28. It was a good enough mark to earn Nennstiel the runner-up mark in the final standings. Even so, Chiles ended up with four runners in the top ten--Jacob Kemp (1st, 17:25), Matt Newland (3rd, 17:30), sophomore Drew Starnes (9th, 17:54), and senior Aric Hawkins (10th, 17:57). Once Chiles junior Jake Crumpacker (12th, 17:58) had crossed the finish line, the Timberwolves had 35 points and the team title. Maclay was second with 58 points, and Wakulla third with 93.

Sophomores Haleigh Martin of Wakulla and Caroline Willis of Maclay had been dueling since the pre-season, when Willis had edged Martin in the Miller Landing Madness 5K. During the season, though, Martin had eclipsed Willis at the Cougar Challenge, the Prefontaine Forest Run, and Pre State at the FSU Invitational. Nevertheless Willis wasn't about to concede the Warrior Rampage to Martin. Soon after the 9:00 AM start, the two were out in front of the rest of the field, battling for the lead. Just past the two mile mark, Martin had a couple of steps on Willis. Then came the last mile and the hills.


"Up the hill on the third mile," said Martin, recalling where she broke the race open.


Martin continued home to get her fourth win of the season, running a career-best 19:48. Willis was second in 20:18, and Taylor County junior Meagan Giddens took third in 21:09. Lindsay James of Maclay was fourth in 21:13. Maclay's other three scorers joined Willis and James in the top ten--sixth-grader Kenzie Mazziotta (6th, 21:29), frosh Jainey Coates (8th, 22:17), and frosh Ann Elise Desotell (9th, 22:18). Those five gave the Marauders a winning total of 25 points. Wakulla was a distant second with 73 points, and Lincoln placed third with 81.

Nine days before the Warrior Rampage, Maclay's middle school boys had lost to Holy Comforter by a single point at the Crusader Classic. The Marauders started the two-mile middle school race at the Rampage thinking of revenge. At the halfway point of the race, Maclay's Clayburn Milford and Johnny McClure were sharing the lead, four seconds ahead of the Crusader Classic champion, James Ford of Holy Comforter. 400 meters later, Milford had broken away from McClure. Milford widened the gap as he raced for home, crossing the finish line a winner in 11:24. McClure was second in 11:40. Ford was third in 11:53, but the next three runners were all from Maclay--Kennan Milford (4th, 12:00), Max Eastman (5th, 12:08), and Jay McDuffie (6th, 12:13). Once McDuffie had crossed the finish line, Maclay had a mathematically unbeatable total of 18 points and the team title. Holy Comforter was second with 41 points, and Florida State University School was third with 81.

There was a single middle school race at the Warrior Rampage, with the girls and boys running together. This was a bit unusual for Deerlake eighth-grader Lawton Campbell, who had run in separate girls' races in each of the four meets of Leon County Schools' 2014 middle school cross-country season.


"I've never run with the boys before," said Campbell. "There were people to chase. It was a different environment and I enjoyed it."


Campbell had very few people to chase, boys or girls, because she finished tenth overall in 12:49, winning the girls' title. It was the fifth win in five races this season for Campbell, Leon County Schools' 2014 middle school girls champion. The Warrior Rampage won't be Campbell's last race this season, either.


"November 1 is the State Championship," said Campbell.


Behind Campbell, Deerlake's Emily Molen and Montford's Caitlin Wilkey had been closing on Katherine Resavage of Holy Comforter. Resavage held them off, though, to take the girls' runner-up spot in 13:05. Molen was third in the the girls' standings with a 13:06, and Wilkey fourth at 13:08. Wilkey was followed by the next four Holy Comforter scorers--Avery Smith (5th, 13:58), Ella Thames (6th, 14:03), Elizabeth Calabro (7th, 14:19), and Emma McGibbany (8th, 14:32). The Crusaders' top five were the first five scorers in the race, giving Holy Comforter a perfect 15-point score and the win. Cornerstone was second with 54 points, and Florida State University School third with 70.

Deerlake girls stun Swift Creek, Fairview boys win first title

The Swift Creek girls' cross-country team had a winning streak of eight meets that went back to the 2012 Leon County Schools' Championship. At the 2014 championship on Wednesday evening, 1 October 2014, the Deerlake girls brought that streak to an end, winning the county title on a tie-breaker. Deerlake's Lawton Campbell led her team, finishing first in the girls' two-mile race in 12:12 for her fourth win in an undefeated season. Griffin's Tavaris King got his third win on the season, winning the country crown with an 11:59 win in the boys' two-mile race. Fairview won their first Leon County Schools' title ever, leading the teams with a 44-point total.


Lawton Campbell isn't the fastest middle school girl in the history of Leon County Schools cross country. She is fast, though. Fast enough to have gone undefeated in the 1600 while running for Montford during the 2014 track season. Fast enough to have gone undefeated while running for Deerlake during the 2014 cross-country season. Fast enough to have run 12:12, the best two-mile time by a middle school girl at the Leon County Schools Cross-Country Championship in the five years the meet has been at Apalachee Regional Park.


Soon after the start of the 2014 Championship race, Lawton Campbell was out in front.


"I was pumped up," she said later. "It was my last meet as a middle schooler and I was excited."


Excitement bought Campbell a five-second lead by the end of the first 800 meters. Swift Creek's Alyson Churchill trailed in second, staying within five seconds till about 800 meters to go. At that point the course started a long uphill that ended with the steep climb called The Wall.


"There's only one tough part; that's the hill towards the end," Campbell said of the course after the race. "But that's toward the end, so it's not a big deal."


It wasn't a big deal to Campbell. Racing up The Wall, she pulled farther away from Alyson Churchill. After the climb Campbell continued to add seconds to the margin, going on to win the race in 12:12. Alyson Churchill finished second in 12:24. Megan Churchill of Swift Creek shook several challengers near The Wall to take third in 12:36.


After Campbell, Deerlake had three other runners in the top ten--Emily Molen was fourth in 12:46, Grace Jackson eighth in 13:18, and Gracie Streeval ninth in 13:55. When Deerlake's fifth runner, Gabrielle O'Sullivan, placed 14th in 14:28, the team had 36 points. However, the defending champions from Swift Creek also had 36. The tiebreaker was the sixth runner on each team, and Deerlake's was faster--Lauren Cook finished 15th in 14:36. The Deerlake girls had won the Leon County Schools' 2014 cross-country title, while the Wolves took the second-place trophy back to Swift Creek. Montford was third with 79 points.

In the boys' race, Griffin's Tavaris King looked a bit tired when he reached the top of The Wall. King also looked like he was 14 seconds ahead with just 400 meters to run when he reached the top of The Wall, and no one looked like they were going to catch him. No one did. King crossed the finish line with a winning time of 11:59, his fastest of the season. Bryant McKnight of Montford crested The Wall in a crowd, but he ran away from them over the final 400 to take second in 12:05.  Alexander Gilliam of Fairview edged Montford's AJ Hodges for third, 12:12 to 12:13.


It was an important third place, but all the places were important in the tight competition for the team championship. Montford was ahead of Fairview through the first three runners on each team. The fourth and fifth scorers, though, put Fairview ahead. Gilliam, Charles Hruda (6th, 12:16), Townshend Porcher (12th, 12:35), Jalen Greenwood (13th, 12:36), and Mkharis Lindsey (15th, 12:40) totalled 44 points for Fairview--good enough for the Falcons first Leon County Schools' cross-country title. The defending champs from Montford were a very close second with 46 points. Swift Creek was third with 55.

Tavaris King and Lawton Campbell can't be caught at Everhart

On Thursday morning, 18 September 2014, the 27th annual Everhart Invitational started out with a familiar script. As at the first two meets of Leon County Schools' 2014 middle school cross-country season, Deerlake's Lawton Campbell won the girls' two-mile race. Similarly, the Swift Creek girls' won the team title. As at the previous week's Montford Invitational, Tavaris King won the two-mile boys' race. But when the team scores had been tallied, the Fairview boys had knocked off the defending champions from Swift Creek, 59 to 87.


It was nearly 11:00 AM on a warm, sunny morning when the girls' race started. Lawton Campbell of Deerlake was out front early with Alyson Churchill close behind. The two were only a step apart when they flashed by the half mile. Deerlake's Emily Molen followed in third, with Emily Culley of Montford on her heels. Little changed up front during the first half of the race, but early in the second mile Campbell started to pull away. But Churchill gave up ground only reluctantly; Campbell built up a significant lead but not a comfortable one. It was a winning lead, though, as Campbell crossed the line first in 12:41. It was the fastest winning time in the girls' race at Everhart since 2008 when another Deerlake runner, Cece Williams, set the girls' course record of 11:56. Alyson Churchill was second in 12:49. Molen placed third in 13:02. Swift Creek's Megan Churchill overtook Emily Culley late in the race to take fourth, 13:04 to 13:05. Each of the top five athletes ran faster than the winners of the previous five Everhart races, 2009 to 2013.


Alyson Churchill and Megan Churchill were joined in the top ten by Swift Creek's Chase Merrick (7th, 13:29) and Emma Romuald (9th, 14:32). When McIver Levy (13th, 14:54) crossed the finish line for Swift Creek, the Wolves had a winning team score, edging Deerlake for the title 35 to 37. The narrow win was Swift Creek's eighth in a row, a streak that dates back to 2012. The last team to beat Swift Creek was Montford at the 2012 Everhart Invitational. This time around the Montford girls were third with 87 points.

At the 2014 season opener at Fort Braden, the Fairview boys placed second, four points behind the winners from Swift Creek. The following week at the Mustang Stampede, Fairview placed third, 15 points back of Swift Creek.


"We'll get there," said Fairview coach Everett Blakely.


At the third meet of the season, the Everhart Invitational, the Fairview Falcons got there, scoring 59 points to Swift Creek's 67 for the win. Montford took third with 72 points.


Tavaris King of Griffin was in control of the race almost from the very first. After the dust had settled from the start, you could see King out front. By the time he passed the mile mark in under six minutes, King had a ten-second lead. That lead grew to over half a minute by the time King crossed the line a winner in 12:04. Griffin's Darry Wilson was second in 12:36. Behind Wilson, Alxander Gilliam of Fairview had moved up through the field during the race to take third in 12:39. Ky Peltier of Swift Creek placed fourth in 12:47. Montford's AJ Hodges kicked past Yunus Kovankaya of Swift Creek for fifth, 12:51 to 12:52.


Originally scheduled for 24 September 2014 as the fourth meet of the season, the Swift Creek Invitational has been canceled. After a week off, the schools will meet one last time on 1 October 2014 in the Leon County School Cross-Country Championship at Apalachee Regional Park.

Swift Creek rides again at the Mustang Stampede

Like at the season opener at Fort Braden a week earlier, Swift Creek swept the team titles at the second meet of Leon County Schools' middle school cross-country season, Montford's Mustang Stampede, on 10 September 2014. In the girls' two-mile, Deerlake's Lawton Campbell picked up her second win of the season, edging Alyson Churchill of Swift Creek 12:46 to 12:50. Travis King of Griffin got his first victory, winning the boys' two-mile in 12:14. 276 athletes competed in the Stampede.


The girls' race started at 6:00 PM on the Montford Middle School athletic fields, northeast of Tallahassee. Seconds after the start, Lawton Campbell was in the lead. By half a mile into the race Campbell was four seconds ahead of the next runner, Montford's Emily Culley, with Swift Creek's Alyson Churchill another three seconds back. Alyson Churchill overtook Culley, then so did Swift Creek's Megan Churchill, but they couldn't catch Campbell. Campbell went on to take first in 12:46, with Alyson Churchill a close second in 12:50. Megan Churchill was third in 13:01, and Culley fourth in 13:03. The Swift Creek Wolves also got top ten finishes from Chase Merrick (5th, 13:04) and Emma Romuald (9th, 13:49). McIver Levy (15th, 14:59) was the Wolves' fifth and final scorer, giving Swift Creek 34 points and the team title. Deerlake also put four runners in the top ten, but was second with 39 points. The hosting Montford Mustangs were third with 80 points.

Half a mile into the boys two-mile race, Cobb's Antonio Davis was setting the pace, closely followed Fairview runners Charles Hruda and Al Gilliam. Griffin's Tavaris King trailed in fourth, and Bryant McKnight of Montford was even farther back. But by the second half of the race Hruda and Gilliam were gone from the lead pack, which was down to three athletes--Davis, King, and McKnight. With just over half a mile to go, the three entered the woods running nearly together. By the time they came out of the trees, King had broken out in front of McKnight and Davis was nowhere in sight. King ran home to win in 12:14, while McKnight held off a charge from Darryl Wilson of Griffin to take second, both runners clocked in 12:23. Coming out of the woods Ky Peltier of Swift Creek kicked past Deerlake's Samuel Mountain to take fourth 12:31 to 12:33. Peltier's late-race move had consequences--Swift Creek took the team title, but only by a single point, edging Montford 66 to 67. Fairview placed third with 81 points, just ahead of fourth-place Deerlake's 84.


The Everhart Invitational follows the Mustang Stampede on Leon County Schools' 2014 middle school cross country schedule. Slated for Thursday morning, 18 September 2014, this will be the 27th annual running of the Everhart Invitational, making it the oldest middle school meet in Tallahassee.
