Over 200 runners finished the first year event, a benefit for the Southern Scholarship Foundation, which since 1955 has enabled students in financial need to attend FSU, FAMU, UF, and FGCU by providing rent-free housing. Not entirely coincidentally, the president of the foundation is Mickey Moore, the runner-up in the Education For Life 5K. The race started and finished on FSU's Mike Long Track, touring the west side of campus on a mostly flat USATF certified course (FL06015DL). The same course was used earlier this year for the Special Olympics of Leon County 5K.

Thanks for the write-up Herb!
ReplyDeleteMickey did a great job organizing the event to benefit the young men and women living in the Southern Scholarship houses. Were it not for these houses these young people in all liklihood would not be able to attend FSU, UF, FAMU, BCC and others. SSF is a Godsend to hundreds of students and their families. And were it not for the hundreds of alumni and friends who lend their support to the work of the foundation, this beacon of hope would not exist.
ReplyDeleteI tip my hat to Mickey, Gulf Winds Track Club and all the students and participants for making the event a BIG success for SSF.
Well done.
