Wayne Angel started his athletic career at Rantoul (Illinois) Township High School (c/o 1971), where his distinguished career earned him induction into the RTHS Hall of Fame in 1985. From there it was a short drive to Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, where Angel was a two-time NJCAA All-American in track & field, also competing as a cross-country runner and a wrestler from 1971-1973. Parkland inducted Angel into its athletic hall of fame in 2009. Angel concluded his collegiate career at the University of Illinois from 1981-1982, setting a school record of 50.56 in the 400m hurdles and graduating with a degree in physical education. He also served in the military, becoming an Army Airborne Ranger and a Distinguished Honor Graduate of the Army's Air Assault School. Angel continued his athletic career in the military, setting an armed forces record of 49.93 in the 400m hurdles, winning three gold medals in the World Military Games, and competing in two U.S. Olympic Trials (1980 and 1984).
