Prince unseats Rice while Helton repeats at Winterfest

SnowflakeJust like in the 2010 race, if you saw the leaders crossing the finish line at Valdosta's 2011 Winterfest 5K, you could be excused for thinking that you were watching an intra-squad meet of the Valdosta State University Blazers cross-country team. In the Saturday afternoon, 3 December 2011 race the first three places all went to Blazer harriers. VSU ace Jesse Prince took the title, beating out the defending champion and event record holder, Chris Rice, 16:29 to 16:42. Dale Smith trailed his teammates in third at 16:50. Valdosta's Tom Phillips (8th, 19:52) was the fastest master in the races. Jordanne Helton, another VSU cross-country runner, successfully defended her women's title in the race, placing ninth overall 19:58. The next two female finishers, Ashley Luther (11th, 20:11) and Taylor Harrington (13th, 20:18), also run cross-country for the Blazers. Libby Smith (41st, 24:58) of Nashville, Georgia was the day's first woman master.


115 athletes completed the point-to-point course in this third annual edition of the Winterfest 5K.
