It was a windy morning on St. George Island on 2 March 2013, but a breeze is to be expected at the annual Red Pepper 5K Run. If you could depend on fair weather on the first Saturday in March to go with the most beautiful beaches in Florida's Big Bend, then St. George Island wouldn't have to hold its Chili Cook-Off to attract thousands of visitors. Thousands did attend the 2013 St. George Island Chili Cook-Off in spite of low temperatures and gusty winds, and 145 of those attendees ran the Red Pepper 5K.Fastest in the field was Michael D. Turner from Eastpoint, on the mainland just across the bridge from the island. Turner ran 21:59 to finish seven seconds ahead of Tallahassee master runner Dan Fortunas. Fortunas' daughter, Samantha Fortunas, was the third finisher and the first female runner, running 22:30 and successfully defending her 2012 Red Pepper 5K title.
You might not be able to depend on the weather, but you can depend on the next Red Pepper 5K being run on Saturday morning, 1 March 2014.
