The race started at 8:00 AM from Hawk's Rise Elementary School with the ten-milers facing two laps on a hilly five-mile loop through the neighborhood. A five-mile race started at the same time on the same course, but the runners in the shorter race had only one lap ahead of them. The hills were the same, but the five-milers would only be seeing them once. With all the athletes on the course together, it was difficult to tell who was in the five mile and who was in the ten mile. Zach DeVeau had that problem.
"Myles Gibson went out with Gary Droze," said DeVeau. "They were ahead of me and I figured Myles was in the five mile. But when I caught them at a mile-and-a-half I was surprised to see he was in the ten mile."
Moving into the lead, DeVeau quickly put some ground between himself and Gibson, getting a quarter-mile ahead by the end of the first five mile loop. The second loop was more of the same, as DeVeau went on to win in 59:14. It was his career best for ten miles.
"Yeah, but it was only my second ten mile," said DeVeau.
Gibson, a master runner from Donalsonville, Georgia, was second in 1:02:35. Grady Smith and master runner Tony Guillen dueled for third through most of the race, but Smith prevailed in the end, 1:03:28 to 1:03:40.
The women's competition started off in a friendly tone. Katie Sherron and Adriana Piekarewicz were chatting and laughing as they passed the first mile in the lead.
"We train together," explained Sherron.
A few miles later, things got more serious.
"I moved ahead on the downhill, right before the four-mile mark," said Sherron.
A mile later, Sherron had a ten-second lead. Piekarewicz wasn't going away, though.
"She was there," recalled Sherron. "I kept thinking that I was going to put some distance on her but I couldn't. I was going as hard as I could. We definitely ran the second half faster than the first."
During that tough second half, Sherron clawed a few more yards ahead of Piekarewicz, ultimately winning in 1:05:19. It was over seven minutes faster than Sherron had run to win the 2014 Ten-Mile Challenge. Capital City Runners' Piekarewicz was second in 1:05:48, placing sixth overall. Anna Busby, another Capital City Runners athlete, was third in the women's standings, fourteenth overall in 1:10:38. Ruffian Tyner was the top woman master and eighth female finisher, 30th overall in 1:21:02.

Runners in the five-mile wore a different style of race bib than those in the ten-mile. If you didn't notice that Joseph Garcia was wearing a five-mile bib, you might have thought he was running in a third race. A Florida A & M University student, Garcia started out faster than everyone, rapidly building up a huge lead. He continued to widen the gap through four miles, then maintained it through the final mile to win in 27:29. Gary Droze was the top master runner in the five mile, finishing runner-up in 28:45. Master runner Mickey Moore took third in 31:21.
Amy Hines took the women's title, finishing fourth overall in 33:58. Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the top woman master and second female finisher, ninth overall in 36:28. Lisa Johnson was third on the women's side, fifteenth overall in 30:13. Johnson had won the five-mile race in 2010.
89 athletes finished the Ten-Mile Challenge, with another 88 completing the five-mile race. Chip timing was provided by Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida.
