The Dog Days Run isn't the oldest road race in Gainesville, Florida. The Melon Run is its senior, having been staged on each Independence Day since 1979. The Florida Track Club will host the 38th annual Melon Run on 4 July 2016. But the Dog Days Run is still a pretty old 5K, and in Westside Park on Saturday afternoon, 2 April 2016, the race was held for the 34th time.Florida Track Club master runner Drew Kieszek won the 3.1-mile race in 17:50. Gainesville schoolboy Anton Matchev, a sixth-grader on the Abraham Lincoln Middle School cross country team, finished runner-up in 18:23. Austin Delacruz took third in 20:08.
Archer, Florida athlete Becky Gomez was the women's champion in the 2016 Dog Days Run, placing fourth overall in 20:08. Amanda Rodriguez was second in the women's standings, seventh overall in 21:57. Gainesville's Rebecca Weaver was the third female finisher, eighth overall in 22:14. Elisabeth Diamond of Bell, Florida was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, placing twelfth overall in 23:20. Diamond was the defending women's champ of the Dog Days Run as well as a multiple past winner of the race.
118 athletes finished the 34th annual Dog Days Run 5K. Start 2 Finish Race Management of Alachua, Florida timed the race.
