Deem and Herring win at Thomasville's Veterans Day 5K

HHH Veterans Day 5KBy Sunday, 11 November 2018, cross-country season was coming to an end for schools all over the United States. The results were already in the books for the final qualifying round, the Regional Meets, for the NCAA Division 1 Cross-Country Championships. Georgia's high school championship had been run more than a week earlier. Florida's high school state cross-country meet had concluded the previous day. Nothing can stop you from running cross-country any day of the year, though. So in Thomasville, Georgia--just twenty miles north of the Florida border--Hands and Hearts for Horses staged a cross-country race that Sunday, their Veterans Day 5K. Tallahassee, Florida schoolboy Noah Deem won the race through South Georgia plantations, running 19:51. Thomasville master runner Nancy Herring was the first woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 29:01.

Fifteen days before winning the HHH Veterans Day 5K, Noah Deem had concluded his cross-country season as a sixth-grader on the Community Leadership Academy boys' team, racing at the Florida Youth Running Association's Middle School State Championship on 26 October 2018. Jordan Deem of Tallahassee was runner-up in 22:14. Nine-year-old Tallahassee athlete Trent Parsons took third in 24:52. Just behind Parsons, Keith Bettcher was the first master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 24:57.

Jenna Kirkpatrick took second in the women's standings, finishing eighth overall in 30:09. Thomasville master runner Beth Crawford was the third woman and ninth overall in 30:33.

43 athletes finished the inaugural HHH Veterans Day 5K. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida timed the race.
