New classifications, new District titles for Chiles, Bartram Trail, Caitlin Wilkey, and Bradley Ball

Chiles High School, located north of Tallahassee in the village of Bradfordville, is one of Florida's younger schools, founded in 1999. But the Timberwolves established themselves in cross-country right away, first sending a team to the podium of the state championship in 2002. That was in class 2A. The following year Chiles moved up to class 3A. Competing in that class during the next sixteen years, the Chiles girls collected six state titles, while the boys earned four state titles. Chiles moved up to class 4A in 2019, and the Timberwolves' first post-season competition in the new classification was the 4A District 1 Championship Meet at Sante Fe College in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday morning, 26 October 2019. The Chiles girls met the challenge, winning the District title while seniors Caitlin Wilkey and Alyson Churchill went one-two in the individual standings with times of 18:55 and 19:04. The boys' title, though, went to another school that had moved up to 4A for the 2019 season, Bartram Trail. Nease junior Bradley Ball was the first finisher in that race, running a winning 16:06.

Caitlin Wilkey

The girls raced first. Caitlin Wilkey, who had never finished further back than sixth in a district meet during her Chiles High career, won the race by more than 40 meters. Runner-up Alyson Churchill of Chiles did have a previous district title to her credit, having won the 3A District 3 race as a Lincoln frosh in 2016, the year she won the 3A State title. Behind the two Timberwolves, Creekside junior Elizabeth Iliff placed third in 19:26. Like Chiles, Creekside had moved from 3A to 4A in 2019. Creekside also had a top ten performance from Blake Petrick (5th, 19:51), but Chiles had four athletes in the top ten, with Wilkey and Churchill joined by Emily Molen (7th, 19:59) and Megan Churchill (9th, 20:15). Kelly Davis rounded out the Chiles score, placing 22nd in 20:51. That gave the Timberwolf girls 61 points and their school's first class 4A district win.

Mandarin, led by a tenth place, 20:18 performance by Mikaela Brown, scored 61 points and took home the runner-up trophy. Creekside was third in the team division with 92 points. The top ten teams qualified for the 4A Region 1 meet in Lake City on 2 November 2019, so Chiles, Mandarin, and Creekside each advanced. Also headed to the Region Meet were Buchholz (4th, 113), Niceville (5th, 135), Fleming Island (6th, 137), Nease (7th, 157), Bartram Trail (8th, 196), Fletcher (9th, 306), and Navarre (10th, 340).
