Hough and Miller fly to Thanksgiving Day wins in Valdosta

Valdosta, Georgia doesn't fool around with cute names like "Turkey Trot," "Pilgrim Prance," or "Dressing Dash" for their annual Thanksgiving Day road race. Quite straightforwardly, it's called the Thanksgiving Day 5K. Winning the 28 November 2013 edition of the race in 16:55, the fastest time at the event since 2009, was Brandon Hough--marathoner, Air Force Academy alumnus, and native of Panama City, Florida. Hough finished over 200 meters ahead of the runner-up, Ryan Kelly. Lake Park's Kelly ran the 3.1 miles in 17:54. Dylan Rogers of Valdosta finished third in 19:01.


Finishing right on Dylan Rogers's heels in fourth place overall, Erin Miller of Columbia, South Carolina took the women's title. Miller's time of 19:03 set a new women's record for Valdosta's Thanksgiving Day 5K, breaking Ashley McGee's 2009 mark of 19:20. Local schoolgirl Makenzee Page was second in the women's standings, placing tenth overall in 22:20.


In master runner competition, Valdosta's Tom Phillips was the first male master, outrunning Rick Mazurkiewicz 21:09 to 21:35. Phillips and Mazurkiewicz finished sixth and seventh overall. The top female master in the race was Valdosta's Debbie Green; Green was the third woman finisher, placing 13th overall in 22:36.


101 athletes finished the race. Timing and finish line services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Hough and Reichenbach grab Sizzler wins on St George

United States Air Force Academy cadet Brandon Hough raced to a 17:06 5K at the 13th annual St George Island Summer Sizzler on Saturday evening, 25 June 2011. Panama City's Hough amassed a margin of victory of more than 200 meters over runner-up Jack Redwing of Tallahassee, who covered the course in 17:51. Third place went to Tallahassee's Joel Piotrowski, who won his second straight master runner title in two weeks, having also earned that honor at Monticello's Melon Run the previous Saturday. Stanley Linton of Crawfordville improved his performance nearly a minute and a half from the previous year's Sizzler, running 18:01, but didn't improve on his 2010 finish position, placing an identical fourth.


In contrast to the men's race, Nicole Reichenbach and Samantha Fortunas battled for the women's title all the way to the finish line, where Reichenbach narrowly prevailed 22:44 to 22:48. Another Tallahassee runner, Angela Wable, took the third women's spot in 23:01. The fourth woman and top woman master was Kristen Corderman of Niceville, Florida, who turned in a 23:09.


218 athletes finished the 5K race, reportedly a record field for the 13th annual event. The St George Island Summer Sizzler is a benefit for the Franklin County Humane Society.
