Vanegas wins and Harvey sets record at Tallahassee Marathon XXXVII

Coming from behind, master runner Esteban Vanegas blew by Jerome Recker in the closing miles of the 37th annual Tallahassee Marathon, winning the event in 2:28:38. In her first marathon, Florida State University track coach Karen Harvey debuted with a 2:43:33 win in the women's division, the fastest time ever run by a woman in the Tallahassee Marathon. The first master woman was women's runner up Nina Kraft of Braunschweig, Germany, the 2009 Tallahassee Marathon women's champ who finished seventh overall in 2:51:43.

The race started shortly after 7:30am on Sunday, 6 February 2011 from the campus of Florida State University. Vanegas led as the runners headed south and away from the university, but Recker took the lead during the early miles. Recker continued to move away from Vanegas, leading by half a minute at eight miles, 1:49 at the halfway point, and by over two minutes at the 19-mile mark. But Recker faded in the closing miles and Vanegas ate into his lead. Ultimately, Vanegas caught Recker and went on to win by over a minute, 2:28:38 to Recker's 2:29:39. For the fifth straight year, it had taken a sub-2:30 performance to win the Tallahassee Marathon.

Karen Harvey, after successes as an athlete in the middle distances and cross-country at both the collegiate and international levels, had decided to try the marathon. As the race left the Florida State campus, Harvey slipped by Nina Kraft and to the front of the women's field. Harvey would never relinquish that lead. Even though she was fading in the closing miles, Harvey had opened such a wide gap on her competition that she finished nearly two kilometers ahead of the runner-up, Kraft.

The Tallahassee Marathon has seen many course changes over its 37-year history, but seemed to have finally found a home on an out-and-back route that follow the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Rail Trail. Unfortunately, the St. Marks Trail was scheduled for re-paving and widening in early 2011, and this year's race had yet another new course (USATF #FL10098EBM), one that took the runners east on Tram Road to the Southwood community. 234 marathoners completed the new course, just one more than finished the Tallahassee Marathon in 2010 but more than have ever before finished the race. If all goes well, the race will return to an improved St. Marks Trail in 2012.

Nearly 5,000 runners devour four races at 2010 Tallahassee Turkey Trot

Up through the 1980s, the St Joe Paper Company ran cattle on Southwood Plantation, waiting for the right moment in the real estate market. Now that land is sub-divided and developed, the Gulf Winds Track Club runs races on Southwood--four every Thanksgiving. Those four races make up the Tallahassee Turkey Trot. Run under other names, locations, and dates during its 35-year history, the Tallahassee Turkey Trot now makes its home on Thanksgiving Day in Southwood, as it did on 25 November 2010.

The long race, the 15K, is actually the main event at the Turkey Trot, the race that has been central to the Turkey Trot in each of its 35 annual incarnations. Running 50:48, Tallahassee's Chris Lake won the 2010 15K by over half a mile, finishing more than three minutes ahead of runner-up Brandon Dahlem (2nd, 52:57), a former University of South Florida distance runner. Just behind Dahlem, Jay Wallace (3rd, 53:09) was the fastest master in the race, outpacing Tony Guillen (6th, 56:12) for that honor. Allison Eagen (21st, 61:46) took the women's title, leading the second-place woman, Micah Adriani (29th, 63:36), by over 400 meters. The third woman across the line, Jane Johnson (30th, 63:51), was the top woman master, handily defeating Beth House (54th, 69:08) for that honor. House was the sixth woman finisher.

The 10K is the johnny-come-lately to the Turkey Trot program, having only been added to the event in 1992. Chiles alumnus and University of North Florida distance runner Josh Brown came out on top in this race, running 35:23 for the win. A little less than a quarter-mile behind Brown, Florida State cross-country coach Karen Harvey demolished the women's division, finishing second overall in 36:47, just three days after coach her team to a second-straight runner-up spot in the NCAA cross-country championships. Maclay School distance runner Katy Swain (12th, 41:54) was the second woman in. Masters' titles went to Tallahassee's Terrance Keenan (6th, 39:48) for the men and Kim Curran (45th, 46:42) for the women.

Aside from the one mile fun run, the 5K is and has always been the shortest option at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot. Matt Mizereck, a Leon High alumnus, three-time FHSAA cross-country champion, and 2010 All-SEC Freshman team selection, went to the front. Canadian Olympian Nate Brannen conceded the early lead, but began to close on Mizereck late in the race. But Mizereck stayed out of Brannen's reach, and crossed the line with a 14:46 win, the fastest 5K road time in Tallahassee for 2010. Brannen finished runner-up in 14:52, slightly faster than his 14:54 performance at the Robin Lotane Hurricane 5K earlier in the year. Last year's Turkey Trot 5K champions, Nick Stenuf, was third in 15:23. Lisa Johnson (19th, 18:30) was the top woman in the race, finishing comfortably ahead of runner-up Kristen Findley (22nd, 18:43). The fastest master runner in the 5K was Tallahassee's John Carico (23rd, 18:44), who beat out Brian Corbin (26th, 18:56) for the honor.

Brannen and Harvey champs at Trojan Pride 5K

Heading a field of over a hundred runners, Nate Brannen ran 15:51 through Tom Brown Park to win the Trojan Pride 5K on Saturday morning, 14 August 2010. Brannen crossed the finish line more than 200 meters ahead of runner-up Kevin Sullivan, a Florida State University track coach and Brannen's partner in Capital City Runners. Lincoln High School sophomore Trevor Touchton was another 300 meters back in third place at 17:49. David Knauf won master runner honors, placing 16th in 22:19. Karen Harvey took the women's title, finishing ninth overall in 19:51. Harvey is the women's head track coach at FSU. Brook Pace was second for the women, 22nd overall in 24:00. The third woman in and top woman master was Kirsten Baggett (25th, 24:25).

The course was not quite cross-country but certainly not a road race, incorporating paved and unpaved trails and roads, grass, clay, mud, and a finish on Lincoln High School's Jimmy Everett Track. The route used two separate loops through the park but still managed to have runners going in both directions on the same part of the Goose Pond Trail at the same time.

The Trojan Pride 5K was a fundraiser for Lincoln High School Trojan athletics. With charming optimism it was labeled the "first annual," so look for it again in 2011.

No Turkeys Were Harmed in the Trotting of this Race

 title=
Over 3,600 athletes took advantage of a perfect Thanksgiving morning for distance running in Tallahassee on 26 November 2009 by running in one of Gulf Winds Track Club's four Turkey Trot races in the Southwood area. Chris Lake was the fleetest in the event's marquee race, the 15K, taking the lead early and never relinquishing it. Lake ran 51:19 to bury his nearest challenger, Gary Droze, who ran 52:49 to finish as runner-up and top master. Behind Lake and Droze, David Altmaier (53:18) and Jay Wallace (53:19) battled for the third spot while Tony Guillen (53:39) watched from fifth place. Amy Hines outran Sheryl Rosen for top woman honors, finishing 13th overall in 57:49 to Rosen's 16th place effort of 58:53. At 40th overall, Jane Johnson was the top woman master in 65:31.

Florida State's Tyler Price won the 10K race in 32:15, finishing almost a mile ahead of runner-up Matthew Mattson (37:44). Kristen Findley finished third overall to capture the top woman's spot with a 39:45. Holden Dickson (40:39) edged out Hamp Stoutamire (40:42) for fourth place, but Stoutamire finished as the first master in the 10K. In 41st place and the seventh woman overall, Kristen Baggett (46:27) was the top woman master.

The 5K was a much closer contest than the two longer races, with Nick Stenuf crossing the line barely ahead of Harry Norton. Both Stenuf and Norton were clocked in 14:52, the fastest road 5K in the Tallahassee area this year. Stenuf was a NCAA All-American in track and cross country at Nazareth (c/o 2008) and currently runs for the Syracuse Chargers TC, while Norton was a top miler at Dartmouth (c/o 2008). On the women's side, FSU cross-country coach Karen Harvey (17:38) outran one of her own runners, Kara Taylor (18:09), for the title. In master competition, Paul Carico was the first male master in, placing 16th overall in 18:25, just ahead of Reid Vannoy, 19th overall in 18:30. Krista Killius (21:28) and Julie Clark (21:32) had a similar close struggle for the top woman's master spot.

The races were run on two 5K loops, the second being a modified version of the first. This made the faster runners in the 10K and 15K victims of the popularity of the Turkey Trot--at several points after their first loop, they had to wade through throngs of slower runners and walkers in the 15K. The race directors made some course changes this year that somewhat alleviated the problem, but still haven't solved it. There is perhaps no solution short of having three entirely different loops or turning away over 2,000 5K participants, neither of which is a particularly desirable option. But the Turkey Trot management team has a year to puzzle it out before the next edition of the event on 25 November 2010.
