Justin Watson and Bree Ponchak were first to the Beach at Bushwacker

Capt'n Fun Bushwacker 5K RunIn summer, people drive to the beach on the weekend. But in the Pensacola, Florida area on Saturday morning, hundreds of athletes ran to the beach. Specifically, they ran 3.1 miles from Gulf Breeze to Pensacola Beach. It was the 31st Bushwacker 5K, and Justin Watson was the fastest of those hundreds headed for the beach, winning the race in 16:13. Bree Ponchak was the first woman in the race, placing twelfth overall in 19:31.

Not quite a year ago, Watson had been racing in the ASUN Conference with the cross-country team of the University of North Alabama. In 2017, though, the North Alabama Lions had been in the Gulf South Conference with Pensacola's University of West Florida. There weren't any West Florida harriers racing against Watson in the Bushwacker, but he did have to outrun their coach, Caleb Carmichael. Carmichael took second with a 16:21. Phillip Gindl, a rising senior on the West Florida Tech High cross-country team, placed third in 16:49. Yancey Ream of Miramar Beach, Florida was the fastest master runner in the Bushwacker, coming in thirteenth overall in 19:39.

Women's champ Bree Ponchak is a sophmore on the cross-country team of Libertyville High in Illinois, making it the second year in a row that a prep runner took the Bushwacker women's title. Saint James High's Presley Miles won in 2018. Pensacola's Kerry Kelley placed runner-up to Ponchak in the 2019 women's standings, finishing fifteenth overall in 19:54. Laura Bennett, another alum of North Alabama cross-country, was the third woman and 22nd overall in 21:10. Heather Maguire of Gulf Breeze was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 33rd overall in 22:41.

353 athletes finished the 2019 Bushwacker 5K. Results Event Timing, LLC, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida timed the race.

The Bushwacker belongs to Ash and Nelson

Capt'n Fun Bushwacker 5K RunTwo hundredths of a second. If the Cap'n Fun Runners' 29th Bushwacker 5K had been a 100-meter dash, the margin of victory would have been just two hundredths of a second. It was that close. If you shrank the race down to a 100-meter dash, first and second place would have been decided by a well-timed lean. Judges would have sweated over the finish line photo. Coaches would have lodged protests.

But the Bushwacker 5K is 50 times the length of the 100-meter dash, and on Saturday morning, 5 August 2017, even though the winner crossed the finish line only two seconds before the next runner, it was easy enough to tell that Alan Ash had beaten Dewayne Riley for the title, 16:13 to 16:15. On the women's side, things were not nearly so close. Katie Nelson ran 18:24 for the women's title, finishing over a minute before her nearest challenger.

It was the fourth Bushwacker victory in the past five years for Alan Ash, a Vanderbilt alumnus from Atmore, Alabama. Milton, Florida athlete Dewayne Riley is also a Bushwacker regular, having finished in the top five each year since 2014. Close enough to see the race between Ash and Riley, Mason Youberg was third in 16:27. Youberg is a 2017 graduate of Gulf Breeze High, where he ran on the Dolphins' cross-country team.

Women's champ Katie Nelson runs cross-country and track at the University of Montevallo, competing in NCAA Division 2. Nelson's 18:24 in the Bushwacker was fast enough, but if you ran two of those back-to-back it still wouldn't match the best 10,000-meter race she ran for Montevallo, a 36:41.29. Gretchen Krause was runner-up on the women's side, placing twentieth overall in 19:33. Krause is a 2016 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, where she ran on the cross-country and track teams. Tallahassee runner Kat Sack was the third woman and 22nd overall in 19:37.

Bob Walker of Baker, Florida was the fastest master runner in the race and 21st overall in 19:35. Pensacola, Florida's Troye Stadler was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, 58th overall in 22:44.

674 athletes finished the 2017 Bushwacker 5K. Results Event Timing, LLC, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida timed the race.

Ash and Kumm lead a pack of Bushwackers

Capt'n Fun Bushwacker 5K RunOn 3 August 2013, just a few months after completing his four-year sojourn at Vanderbilt University, Alan Ash won the Bushwacker 5K. Ash was back in Pensacola Beach, Florida a year later, winning the 2014 Bushwacker 5K. Somehow the Atmore, Alabama athlete missed the 2015 race, but on 6 August 2016 Alan Ash won the Bushwacker 5K for a third time, running 15:59. Fiana Kumm, formerly a distance runner at George Mason University and Penn State University, took the women's title at the Capt'n Fun Runners' 28th annual Bushwacker, placing fourteenth overall in 18:53.

Vincent Mauri--a sophomore on the Howland High cross country team in Warren, Ohio--was second behind Ash in 16:36. Just a few steps behind Mauri, Jeffrey Oliver of Pensacola was third in 16:39. Milton, Florida's Dewayne Riley took fourth in 16:58 and Micah Kemp of Jay, Florida placed fourth in 17:06. Niceville High coach Joe Corderman was the top master runner in the Bushwacker, finishing 22nd overall in 20:18.

Allie Nelson finished second in the women's standings and 23rd overall in 20:18. Nelson is a senior on the cross country team at TR Miller High in Brewton, Alabama. Meghan Connor took third on the women's side and 30th overall in 20:35. Michele Williams was the first woman master and the fourth female finisher, placing 39th overall in 21:09.

884 athletes finished the 2016 Bushwacker 5K. Results Event Timing, LLC, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida timed the race. By the way, the fun was just beginning with the Bushwacker. The race was the first in the three-event 850 Bridge Run Series, which continues with the third annual Bridge to Bridge 5K on 15 October 2016 and concludes with the twentieth annual Double Bridge Run on 4 February 2017. You can also plan and prepare for the 29th Bushwacker 5K on 5 August 2017. I have a feeling Alan Ash will be ready for that one.

Schneider and Sandström beat 'em all at Bushwacker

Capt'n Fun Bushwacker 5K RunIn the northern hemisphere, by the time the first Saturday in August rolls around, people are thinking of heading for the beach. This is also true in northwest Florida, where runners are also thinking about the beach. The runners, though, are thinking in particular about Pensacola Beach and the Capt'n Fun Runners' annual Bushwacker 5K. On Saturday morning, 1 August 2015, the race took place for the 27th time since 1987 (the Capt'n Fun Runners missed a couple of years in 1996 in 1997).

Pensacola, Florida, athlete Brent Schneider won the 2015 version of the event cruising across the finish line in 16:08 with a lead of more than 60 meters. Danny Goodman of Gulf Breeze, Florida, took the runner-up spot in 16:21, and Dewayne Riley of Milton, Florida, was third in 16:30. Micah Kemp, a recent graduate of Jay High where he ran cross country and track, nabbed fourth in 16:44.

Maria Sandström ran 19:00 at the 2015 Bushwacker 5K. It wasn't as fast as the 17:19.53 she ran on the track for the University of Texas-Arlington in 2012, or the 17:12.76 she ran back home in Sweden. But it was fast enough to earn Sandström the women's title and place her 18th overall. Crystal Davis of Atlantic Beach, Florida, was second in the women's standings, coming in 23rd overall in 19:44. Behind Davis, Claire Crist (44th, 21:06) edged Cheyenne Andrew (46th, 21:13) for the third women's spot. Crist is just weeks away from starting her junior year cross country season at Niceville High; Andrew, coming off a win at Dothan's Tiger Trot Trail Race, is a cross country runner at Mercer University.

Pensacola's Eric Nelson reached the finish line just five seconds ahead of Tim Unger of Tallahassee, but those few seconds were enough to make Nelson the top master in the 2015 Bushwacker 5K. Nelson was 24th overall in 19:45. Unger, the second master runner in the race, finished 26th overall in 19:50. Michele Williams of Milton, Florida, was the top woman master in the race and fifth female finisher, placing 51st overall in 21:34.

923 athletes finished the 27th annual Bushwacker 5K. Timing and finish line services were provided by Results Event Timing, LLC, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
