Micah Kemp and Beverly Fair celebrate victory at the Celebrate Freedom 5K

Since 2000, Jay, Florida's annual Celebrate Freedom 5K had always been on Independence Day. In 22 years, the only exception to that rule had been when July 4 was on a Sunday. In those rare instances, the race was scheduled a day early on July 3. But in 2022, Jay City Park, the traditional venue for the start and finish of the race, was going to be closed on the nation's birthday. That year, race director Matt Dobson slated the event on 25 June 2022, nine days before the Glorious Fourth.


Micah Kemp had no trouble racing on the new date, winning the 5K by well over 200 meters in 18:37. Nor was master runner Beverly Fair thrown off by the calendar; Fair took the women's title with a 24:31 effort, placing tenth overall.


Kemp's wins at the Celebrate Freedom 5K has become almost as traditional as holding the race on the Fourth of July. Kemp first won the race as a schoolboy at Jay High, and continued to win in his years as a University of West Florida Argonaut. The first place in 2022 goes on his tally as a post-collegiate athlete. Chance Thornton, a rising senior on the Jay High cross-country team, took second behind Kemp in 19:31. Another Jay Royal harrier, rising sophomore Ramsey Reeves, finished third in 20:59. The first master runner in the race was sixty-year-old Tim Lee; Lee came in fifth overall in 22:30.


Amelia Lee, a rising sophomore at Miller High in Brewton, Alabama, was second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 25:52. Master runner Patti Zamyslowski was the third woman, fourteenth overall in 26:41.


53 athletes finished the 2022 Celebrate Freedom 5K.

Argonaut Micah Kemp goes 16:56 to make it six in a row at Jay's Celebrate Freedom 5K

Whatever events highlighted the athletic calendar in Jay, Florida during the 1900s, the premier race of the 2000s has been the Celebrate Freedom 5K. Athletes ran the inaugural race on Independence Day in 2000, and the twentieth annual running was on Thursday morning, 4 July 2019. Of those twenty race, Micah Kemp has won the last six. A redshirt senior on the University of West Florida's Argonauts cross-country team, Kemp went 16:56 to defeat all comers at the 2019 Celebrate Freedom 5K. Milton, Florida master runner Leslie Specht was the first woman in the 3.1-mile race, placing fifteenth overall in 24:45.


Alabama high school cross-country runners took the next two spots behind Kemp. From UMS-Wright Prep in Mobile, sophomore Joseph Perry was second in 17:06, while Miller High alum Rider Jernigan was third in 18:04. Casey Delong, an alum of Kemp's alma mater, Jay High, placed third in 18:30. 71-year-old Billy Bryant was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 22:15.


Jillian Thornton, a rising junior on the Jay High cross-country squad, was the second woman in the 5K. Thornton came in eighteenth overall in 25:35. Savannah Landefeld, an alum of Arlington, Virginia's Yorktown High cross-country team, finished third in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 25:53.


Matt Dobson of Jay directed the 2019 Celebrate Freedom 5K. 89 athletes finished the race.

Micah Kemp turns a 16:40 at ARPXC in the Trash Dash 5K

University of West Florida cross-country runner Micah Kemp isn't competing for the Argos this year. Nevertheless, on Saturday morning, 27 October 2018, Kemp was on the premier collegiate cross-country running venue in the Southeast--Tallahassee, Florida's Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course. That morning, Kemp won the eighth-annual Trash Dash, running the five-kilometer course in 16:40. Fatema Jaffer, an athlete on the Florida State University women's cross-country ream, was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 18:38.

Michael Niezgoda took second in the race, posting 18:11 for 5K. Tristan Cravello, a second-year student at Florida State University, placed third in 18:21.


Hailey Hendry, a fellow Lady Seminole of Fatema Jaffer, finished second in the women's standings, placing fifth overall in 18:57. Another Lady Seminole cross-country runner, Kate Bernicke, was the third woman and sixth overall in 19:10.


Duane Evans was the first master runner and the sixth male finisher, thirteenth overall in 20:19. Gingy Sampson was the first woman master and fourteenth female finisher, 41st overall in 27:50.


85 athletes finished the 2018 Trash Dash 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Kemp and Blackmon keep winning at Jay's Celebrate Freedom 5K

2017 Celebrate Freedom 5K logoMicah Kemp was a schoolboy cross-country runner at Jay High School when he first started winning the Celebrate Freedom 5K. He continued to win the annual Jay, Florida event every year, even as a member of the University of West Florida men's cross-country team. At the eighteenth annual Celebrate Freedom 5K on Tuesday morning, 4 July 2017, Kemp's coach at UWF showed up, Caleb Carmichael. Carmichael had won the race in 2012, back before Kemp had begun his streak of victories. It didn't matter. Kemp won again, posting an 18:11 for the 3.1-mile course through the Panhandle countryside, while Carmichael was second in 18:26. In the women's competition, Olivia Blackmon was getting started with her own streak. A rising frosh on the cross-country squad at T. R. Miller High in Brewton, Alabama, Blackmon had won the women's title at the 2016 Celebrate Freedom 5K. Blackmon was the women's champ again in 2017, placing eighth overall in 21:09.


While Kemp and Carmichael battled on the homestretch, cotton fields on one side and peanuts growing on the other, they were trailed by Casey Delong. Delong, a rising senior on the Pace High cross-country team, had finished runner-up in 2015 and fifth overall in 2016. In the 2017 race Delong was third overall in 18:51, his fastest time yet in the race. Matt Kelly was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing seventh overall in 20:11.


Women's champ Olivia Blackmon wasn't the only TR Miller High athlete in the race. Rising eighth-grader Jordan Thompson was also in the race, finishing second in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 23:03. Ten-year-old Elyse Carmichael of Pensacola, Florida was third on the women's side and twentieth overall in 23:50. Lori Short was the top woman master and eighth female finisher, 31st overall in 25:14.


113 athletes finished the 2017 Celebrate Freedom 5K.

Argonaut harrier Micah Kemp notches his third straight Celebrate Freedom 5K win

17th annual Celebrate Freedom 5KIn 1776, just after the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote to Abigail Adams about Independence Day that "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival."


On Saturday morning, 4 July 2016, they did just that in Jay, Florida with the Celebrate Freedom 5K and University of West Florida cross-country runner Micah Kemp was the fastest in the celebration. The Jay native won the race for the third year in a row, running 17:42. The women's title went to Olivia Blackmon, an eighth-grader at Miller High School, just up the river from Jay in Brewton, Alabama. Blackmon was seventh overall in 21:20.


Cody Wolfe, a senior on the Jay High cross-country squad, was runner-up in 19:06. Escambia Academy sophomore cross-country runner Jackson Bonner placed third in 20:03. Billy Bryant was the top master runner and fourth overall in 20:11.


Jillian Thornton, an eighth-grader on the Jay High cross-country team, was second in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 23:20. Miller High senior harrier Carmen Knowles edged Tate High junior Riley Orr for third on the women's side, 23:34 to 23:35. Knowles and Orr were fourteenth and fifteenth overall. Melissa Wolter was the first woman master and eighth female finisher, coming in 38th overall in 27:10.


89 athletes joined the celebration by finishing the 2016 Celebrate Freedom 5K. The next celebration will be the eighteenth annual Celebrate Freedom 5K on 4 July 2017.

Kemp and Townsend celebrate wins at the Celebrate Freedom 5K

Tallahassee's Firecracker 5K isn't the only Independence Day road race out there. Valdosta, Georgia, has an Independence Day 5K as well, and I understand that a few people even run a 10K in the streets of Atlanta on July 4. In the Florida Panhandle, the Celebrate Freedom 5K has been contested in Jay on Independence Day annually since 2000. The 3.1-mile race returned to the streets of Jay on Saturday morning, 4 July 2015.


Micah Kemp won the race for the second year in a row, completing all five kilometers before any other runner had finished the first four. Two months earlier Kemp had run his last race as a Jay High Royal, but graduating didn't mean that he was giving up racing. For one thing, Kemp has signed to run cross country next year at the University of West Florida in Pensacola. As further evidence that he is still an athlete, Kemp ran 16:30 at the 16th annual Celebrate Freedom 5K. Casey Delong, a rising sophomore on the cross country team at Pace High, placed second in 20:58. Jon Tyner was third in 21:34. The fastest master runner in the Celebrate Freedom 5K was Russell Orr, fourth overall in 22:28.


Prep runners also turned in top performances on the women's side of the race. The women's title went to Tarah Townsend, a rising junior at Miller High in Brewton, Alabama. Townsend was eighth overall in 23:57. Tate High rising sophomore Riley Orr took second in the women's standings, placing 16th overall in 26:13. Betsy Wooten was the top woman master in the race, 38th overall in 31:31.


72 athletes finished the 2015 Celebrate Freedom 5K. Expect the 17th annual Celebrate Freedom 5K on 4 July 2016.
