Shawn Logan and Paula O'Neill were Half-Shell Hustlers in Apalachicola

Running OystersReportedly, Apalachicola Bay is the source of 90% of Florida's oyster production. So the only mystery about Apalachicola, Florida's annual Oyster Cook-Off is why it took till 2011 for the city to host that festival. Since 2014 the Oyster Cook-Off has included a running event, the Half-Shell Hustle. Shawn Logan won the seventh annual edition of that race on Saturday morning, 18 January 2020, running the five kilometers through the streets of Apalachicola in 18:18. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was the first woman in the 3.1-mile race, placing seventh overall in 23:07.


Duane Evans was the fastest master runner in the Hustle, placing second overall in 19:19. seventh overall in 23:07. Reece Juno, the eighth-grade ace of the Franklin County School cross-country team, took third with a 20:50.


In a battle of two past champions of the Hustle, Eden Keene edged master runner Genee Meleski for second in the women's standings, 23:49 to 23:50. The two athletes were eighth and ninth overall. Keene had been the first woman in the race in 2018 and 2019, while Meleski had taken the women's title in 2017.


106 athletes finished the 2020 Half-Shell Hustle, the race's largest field yet.

Sizzler 5K is a day at the beach for Logan and Leitman

The twentieth annual Sizzler 5K, run in 2017, was announced as the finale for the series. But one year later the race was back for an encore. Shawn Logan starred in the curtain call, winning the 21st annual race by 150 meters with a 19:06. Melanie Leitman of Tallahassee, Florida took the women's title, placing thirteenth overall in 22:14.


Logan had finished runner-up in the 2017 Sizzler; he also had a ninth-place finish in the 2014 race. Duane Evans was the top master runner and overall runner-up in the race, going 19:43. Master runner Philip Sura took third overall in 20:04. Jon Durham, a cross-country runner at Deerfield-Windsor School, was fourth with a 20:27.


Half a minute behind Leitman, Annabella Farabaugh was the women's runner-up, placing fifteenth overall in 22:44. Kelcie Winter was third in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 23:56. Paula O'Neill was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, twentieth overall in 24:23.


The 2018 Sizzler 5K had a new course, with both starting line and finish line convenient to Doc Myer’s Island Pub and Sports Bar, headquarters for race-day registration and the site of the post-race party. 97 athletes finished the 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the race. Proceeds of the event benefit The Elder Care Community Council of Franklin County.
