The pilgrimage from Hopkinton

Christians returning from the Holy Land carry a palm leaf. Moslems who make the Hajj to Mecca are allowed to take the title Hadji. Distance runners who make the annual pilgrimage from Hopkinton to Boston (aka the Boston Athletic Association Marathon) receive a finisher's medal and a cup of beef stew. Actually, I'm not sure about the beef stew. I was at the Marathon in 1989 and 1990, and never saw the stew.

This year quite a few marathoners from the Tallahassee region made the pilgrimage to the 114th Boston Marathon. There are older marathons, there are faster marathons, and there are bigger marathons, but there is only one Boston. I won't rule out the possibility of going back some day. After all, I've still got to try that stew.

It's Corbin and Barrett's race at the Autism 5K

Brian Corbin raced a five-kilometer tour of the Southwood area of Tallahassee in 18:01, winning the second annual Run For Autism 5K on 17 April 2010. Corbin completed the Saturday morning race over 200 meters ahead of his nearest challenger, Mickey Moore. Corbin was also the fastest master (over 40) finisher. Jamie Barrett, a member of the Florida State University swim team, was the top woman, finishing 12th overall in 21:08. The master woman title went to the next woman in, Lake City's Jackie Lewis, who was 20th overall in 22:57. 280 runners completed the 5K.

The 5K started a little later than the scheduled 9:00am, delayed by the one-mile fun run. The milers had gone off course and ended up running perhaps as much as four kilometers, so that many were still trying to finish when it was time for the 5K to take to the road. When the 5K did start, the athletes were led around the well-marked course by a police motorcycle--no one had much of a chance of getting lost. By the end of the first kilometer when the early-race confusion had cleared, Corbin was already leading. He did nothing but continue to build on his lead for the rest of the race. Behind Corbin, Moore was back in sixth place after the first kilometer, but steadily moved up as the race progressed. By the end of the fourth kilometer Moore was in command of second place and held that position till the race's end. On the women's side, Jamie Barrett's race went much like Corbin's. Barrett led early, held the lead till the end, and won by almost 400 meters.

Corbin's 18:01 broke the course record of 19:21, set by Daniel Bradford in the first running of the Autism 5K in 2009.

1976 Palace Saloon 5K T-Shirt

Here's a photo of the T-shirt from the second annual Palace Saloon 5K, run in 1976. I had Jo Lena Pace model it several years ago; for some reason it no longer fits me. Back then they must have been made with a fabric that shrank a lot. At the time that John Kalin took this picture I had this crazy idea that I was going to get photos of each style of shirt ever made for the race.

As you can see, "Muggy" is already in place. He's the single mug with the moustache, which was the original logo for the Palace Saloon bar. Nowadays "Muggy" has a partner on the bar sign. The current "Muggy" on the Palace Saloon 5K race shirts is yet a third character who has his mouth closed, which probably gives him trouble breathing when he's running (don't tell me he might be a she with a figure like that).

If there was a shirt at the first race, this was probably it. Hochstein did not change the shirts for several years, and shirts only went to award winners anyway. It was several years before local races started giving shirts to all finishers. In fact, the only race I remember in the Bad Old Days that did have a shirt just for finishing was the Peachtree 10K. This might have something to do with the phenomenal growth of the Peachtree Road Race in the 1970s, altho' more of that had to do with the "Running Boom," being one of very few road races in the region, and being located in the biggest city in the South.

14th annual Palace Saloon 5K, 9 April 1988

In the wake of yesterday's 36th annual Palace Saloon 5K, here are some "results from the attic:" the 14th annual Palace Saloon 5K, run on 9 April 1988. By 1988 the course was some version of the current one: Dupree Street to Municipal Way to Appleyard Drive to Jackson Bluff Road to the Palace. However, unlike the current event, there were two races: an open 5K and an invitational 5K. For several years, this format was followed, with the fastest runners in town invited to run in a special section. This way, the people who were usually way behind them in races could get to see them run. Of course, because the Palace is a point-to-point course, they didn't get to see much. Also, two races meant that the drivers on Jackson Bluff Road had to share the road with runners that much longer. Jackson Bluff Road drivers tend to have trouble with sharing.

Lake, Woytalewicz run into Palace Saloon 5K history

On a perfect Tallahassee morning for distance running, Chris Lake ran away from a field of 1200 runners to win the 36th annual Palace Saloon 5K on Saturday, 10 April 2010. Lake made the dash from James Messer Fields Park to the Palace Saloon in 15:45, 21 seconds ahead of runner-up Daniel Lee. Jay Wallace set the pace for the master men, winning the 40-and-over division in 16:45 and finishing seventh overall, while Tim Unger was top among grandmaster men, placing 16th overall in 17:56.

The women's division turned out to be a duel between Christina Woytalewicz and Amy Hines. Hines had lost a similarly close Palace Saloon 5K to Lisa Johnson the previous year, 18:11 to 18:15. Racing Woytalewicz, Hines improved on her 2009 performance, running 17:45. Woytalewicz, however, clocked 17:42 for the win. The previous evening, just over twelve hours earlier, Woytalewicz had run a 10:29.20 3,000m at the Seminole Invitational track meet. Among the women masters, Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson successfully defended her title, running 19:49. Fran McLean was the top grandmaster woman, running 21:37.

In the eighth year of team competition, WYSIWYG won the men's division with a cumulative time of 85:53, beating the 2008 record of 86:02 set by "The Fighting Shamandas." Led by Amy Hines, the "Swift Chicks" won the women's division in 96:17, beating the 98:53 total of the runner-up "Death Eaters." The "Swift Chicks" total set a new record, breaking the previous best of 97:40 set by "The Girls Club" in 2007.
