Shearon and Jeroski win the Summer Sprint

David Shearon, one of the top master distance runners of the Florida panhandle, won the Summer Sprint 5K on Saturday morning, 17 July 2010, at Naval Support Activity Panama City. Shearon crossed the finish line almost 300 meters ahead of runner-up Benjamin O'Donnell. Justine Jeroski finished fifth overall in 20:35 to win the women's division, comfortably ahead of runner-up Michaela Ashley (21:49). Jeroski is an engineering student and NCAA All-American distance runner at Case Western Reserve University. The top woman master was Colleen Duffley, who was the sixth woman finisher and 26th overall in 26:01.

65 athletes completed the five-kilometer race, an annual event hosted by the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program of Naval Support Activity Panama City.

Free entry to Florida State Parks on 17 July 2010

July is national Park and Recreation Month!

July is also national Ice Cream Month and national Baked Beans Month, but never mind about those. The National Recreation and Park Association has decided that July is Park and Recreation Month, and is determined to bully us into observing it. They were so successful in Florida that on Saturday, 17 July 2010 you can get free admission into any Florida State Park in honor of Park and Recreation Month.

If you're already a fan of Florida's state park system then you probably have an annual pass anyway. But if not then this is an excellent time to see what you've been missing. Have you ever wanted to try out the Lake Overstreet Trails in Maclay Gardens State Park? Saturday is your chance to do it without paying two dollars a head. The same deal applies if you'd like to sample the hiking trails in Torreya State Park or Suwannee River State Park.

Of course, the whole idea of Park and Recreation Month is to take advantage of all our recreation opportunities and parks throughout the month of July. So you would be in the spirit of the month if you were to visit a city park like Lake Elberta on July 20, or a county facility like the Apalachee Regional Park Trail on July 25. But there's an economic incentive to visit one of the Florida state parks on July 17. So if you were thinking about visiting St. Andrew's State Park, St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, or St. George Island State Park before the oil from BP's Deepwater Horizon whoopsie washes up on shore, here is another reason to go this weekend.

Oh, and the following Sunday (July 18) is National Ice Cream Day. Act accordingly.

"Stretch Your Legs" trails on I-10 in west Florida

If you're driving back to Florida from one of those dreary Gulf coast destinations like Biloxi or New Orleans, chances are (unless you're unfortunate enough to live in Pensacola) you'll be heading east on Interstate 10 through Santa Rosa County. Where, if you're feeling road-weary, you can stop at the rest area near mile marker 30 and walk on the "Stretch Your Legs Trail."


The trail is a narrow concrete loop that meanders around the perimeter of the rest area. Several signs are posted that give the length of the loop at 0.267 miles. Clearly someone out there has a compulsion about precision. The trail passes between parking areas and the rest rooms twice, which means traffic on the trail crosses traffic heading to and from the plumbing. Because of that I wouldn't recommend running on the trail, so forget about staging a four-lap "Nautical Mile Championship of North Florida" at the rest area. It is a good place to, well, stretch your legs, though, fighting fatigue that leads to auto accidents. Someone should be hitting up auto insurance companies to fund these at every highway rest area.


This isn't the only such loop on I-10. About another 30 miles east, the Okaloosa County rest area at mile marker 59 (eastbound) has an identical 0.267 mile loop. According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the westbound rest areas in Okaloosa and Santa Rosa Counties each have similar 0.256 mile walking trails. That's it for Interstate 10 in Florida, except for the Fanny Bay Trail in Baker County at the westbound rest area at mile marker 318. A real trail through the Osceola National Forest, the Fanny Bay Trail is in a league of its own. I still dream about the Florida Division of Forestry and the Florida Department of Transportation getting together to put together a similar trail in the Talquin State Forest next to the I-10 rest area in Leon County at mile marker 194. But I'm not holding my breath.

Marino and Peters "Honor Their Neighbors" in Valdosta

Finishing over half a kilometer ahead of the second-place runner, James Marino ran 17:34 to win the Honor Our Neighbor 5K in Valdosta on Saturday morning, 10 July 2010. Only six days earlier Marino had run 17:29 at Valdosta's Independence Day 5K where he finished seventh. In the competition for the top master spot Kelly Barcol outran Rick Mazurkiewicz 21:20 to 21:30. Barcol and Mazurkiewicz finished fifth and sixth overall respectively.


The swiftest female of the morning was Alison Peters, ninth overall in 22:23, an almost identical time to her 22:22 at the Valdosta Independence Day 5K. Valdosta's Jodi Harbin was the top female master, running 27:45 to finish as the sixth woman and 30th overall.


111 athletes completed the 5K, which started and finished in Valdosta's McKey Park. The organizers hope to make the race an annual event.

Tallahassee & Area goes to Peachtree, 2010

On 4 July 2010 the Atlanta Track Club hosted the 41st annual Peachtree Road Race. In the Dark Ages of the early 1970s when the event was in its infancy, there weren't many distance runners in the southeast but almost all of them went to Peachtree. Now there are many more runners out there, so many that the race is capped at 55,000 entrants. Twice as many would run if they could be shoehorned onto Peachtree Street.


Tallahassee-area runners have been competing at Peachtree since the earliest years of the race, and this year was no exception. Below is a list of all finishers from 100 miles around Tallahassee, the region for which I maintain the Trouble Afoot! race calendar. That's over 300,000 square miles, but quite a bit of that is the Gulf of Mexico, and much of the rest is covered in pine trees. Of the runners in that area who raced on Independence Day weekend, many ran in the Greensboro Firecracker 5000, the Valdosta Independence Day 5K, the Live Oak God and Country 5K, or some other race. But more than a few went to Peachtree, as you can see below.

LeBron who?

I had the misfortune last night of eating supper at a restaurant with multiple television sets. Usually all of them are showing surfing videos so this isn't a problem. Yesterday, though, they were all tuned to ESPN, which was not only showing the one-hour LeBron-James-announces-his-new-team circus, but was filling up the airtime before the special speculating on what the announcement would be, what each outcome would mean, and the effect of Mr. James' decision on global climate change and the geopolitical situation in central Asia.

I have to admire the National Basketball Association for managing to package and sell shows like this. The games themselves are less interesting than a good college or even high school hoops match, but the NBA still manages to get them on the air and I guess that people even watch them. The NBA also pioneered the "draft" show, an exciting television production where David Stern slowly reads the names of 60 college roundball players, some of whom we may even hear of again in the future.

The people promoting track and field just don't have the same chutzpah as the NBA's marketers. After all, there are many running-related announcements that would be at least as exciting as Lebron James telling us whose fans he will be disappointing next season. Perhaps some of these announcements could be developed as a one- or two-hour special on ESPN. Here are a few:
  • Walter Dix announces whether he will attempt to qualify for the 2012 United States Olympic team in the 100, the 200, or both.

  • Meb Keflezighi announces which spring marathon he will be entering in 2011, Boston or London.

  • The IAAF announces the location of the 2015 World Championships in Athletics.

  • Usain Bolt announces whether he will remain with Puma or sign a contract with a different shoe company.

  • The Millrose Games announces the field for the Wanamaker Mile.

  • The Marine Corps Marathon announces whether they will be using Gatorade or Exceed at the 2010 race.
ESPN could also try showing a race every now and then. However, with their programming leaning away from actual sporting events and more toward sports-related events and people in suits talking about sports, I don't expect to see that soon.

Skelton and Stedman win at Greensboro


Running patiently, Cliff Skelton clocked 18:45 for the win at the 28th annual Firecracker 5000m road race in Greensboro, Florida on Saturday, 3 July 2010. Nancy Stedman was top woman as well as top woman master, finishing 18th overall in 22:44.


Wakulla High's Stanley Linton jumped out into the front soon after the start, and had a huge lead at the end of the first kilometer of the five-kilometer race. At three kilometers Linton was still leading, but Skelton had broken away from the rest of the pack and narrowed the gap. Skelton continued to close through the fourth kilometer then put Linton away on the final straight, winning 18:45 to 18:57. Cole Tessier (19:25), Michael Kennett (19:38), and Nick Meginnis (20:19) rounded out the top five.


In the women's competition, Stedman had her own way with the field. She was already well in front by the end of the first kilometer and stayed there till the end of the race, finishing nearly 200 meters in front of runner-up Calyn Reber. Reber had to fight for the second spot, outkicking Sarah Niedeman 23:41 to 23:42. There was also a struggle for fourth, with Brandon Easterwood edging Angela Wable 24:02 to 24:03.


The Firecracker 5000 is put on by the Greensboro Kiwanis Club. The course is a point-to-point route that starts well outside of town; runners are bused to the start by the Kiwanis. There are few turns and the run is mostly flat--the third kilometer features a descent in and climb out of the glen of Tallahassee Creek but there are no other hills. Kilometers as well as miles were clearly marked. The weather for the race was more typical of October than July as the runners were treated to a cool, dry morning; a summer rarity in the Panhandle. The Kiwanis served a post-race breakfast to runners, gave away watermelons, and distributed bike helmets to children. The nearly 90 athletes who competed can count themselves lucky to have been there.
