Aucilla and Leon take home trophies from the 2010 Lincoln XC Invite

The Aucilla Christian Academy girls' cross country team scored 67 points to win the 2010 Lincoln Invitational Cross-Country Meet, held Saturday, 18 September 2010 at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee, Florida. Aucilla scored just three points better than the runners-up from Leon High, who were led by a winning 21:17 performance from senior Brooke Eubanks. In the boys' race Leon finished atop a 19-team field, outscoring the runners-up from Maclay School 31 to 65. One of those 31 points was scored by Leon senior Riley Doherty, who successfully defended his 2009 Lincoln Invitational title with a 16:20 run around the course.

17 teams lined up for the 10:00am girls' 5K race. In the absence of 2009 Lincoln Invitational winner Stefanie Kurgatt, the only certainty was that there would be a new champion in 2010. About half a mile into the race, Langlee Toothman of Florida State University School and P. K. Yonge's Kailyn Allen were in front. By the halfway point of the race, Allen had faded to fifth and Toothman had the lead to herself, followed by Emily Westlake of P. K. Yonge and Leon's Brooke Eubanks. Eubanks passed the struggling Westlake and then made a strong move past Toothman. There was no need to look back after that as Eubanks built up a lead of nearly 80 meters on her way to the win. Toothman hung on to take second for FSU in 21:37, while Leon's Autumn Wable moved up to place third in 21:58. Leon put three runners in the top ten, but it take five athletes to have a cross-country team, and Aucilla's fourth and fifth runners, Taylor Copeland (17th, 23:25) and Megan Gidens (21st, 23:45), made the difference between the top two teams. Aucilla outscored Leon 67 to 70 for the win. In a showdown of Developmental Research Schools, FSU School edged out P. K. Yonge for third, 103 to 106.

Once the girls cleared the course, it was time for the boys' 5K race. Two-time FHSAA-1A state champion Patrick Swain of Maclay was on the starting line, as were 2009 Lincoln Invitational champion Riley Doherty of Leon and 2008 Lincoln Invitational champion Will Stanford of Leon--not to mention 221 other athletes hungering for a win.

Close to 800 meters into the race Leon's Stanford was at the front of the race, with Maclay's Swain less than a stride behind. By 2400 meters Swain had taken over first and built up a lead. Behind Swain, Doherty and Leon's John Hazleton had moved up into second and third, while Stanford had fallen to fourth. As the leaders approached 3200 meters, Swain was still in front, but Doherty had left Hazleton and was moving up on the Maclay runner. Midway through the fifth kilometer Doherty passed Swain and ran for home. Doherty had beaten Swain by less than half a second in the 2009 race, but this time the Leon senior crossed the finish line more than 50 meters ahead of the Maclay senior, winning 16:20 to 16:30. Hazleton was third in at 16:50, while P. K. Yonge sophomore Garret Westlake moved up to finish fourth in 16:55. Godby's Dieumy Duclos outkicked Leon's Ben McMahon for fifth, 17:04 to 17:05.

Leon ended up with four runners in the top ten and no scorer finishing farther back than 11th, thus winning the team title with 31 points. Maclay put two runners in the top ten and four in the top 20, scoring 65 points to take second. The hosts from Lincoln were third with 93 points , and in another showdown of the two Developmental Research Schools P. K. Yonge beat out FSUS for fourth, 103 to 170.

"You're going to like it," Lincoln High coaching assistant Jessie Close assured me when I learned that there was going to be a new course this year at the Lincoln Invitational. The races were still at Tom Brown Park as in years gone by, but the narrow trail through the woods was no longer part of the course. In place of that "No Passing Zone," the runners negotiated a more open two-loop course where running was more important than position. Spectators could see much more of the race and the runners still got a taste of the traditional Tallahassee hills.

Tallahassee high school cross country continues on October 2 with the Godby Cougar Challenge at Phipps Park and on October 9 with the Florida State University Invitational at the Apalachee Regional Park Trail.

Lisa Johnson wins big at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival

Lisa Johnson might have been running a time trial, running alone far in front of the field at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K on Saturday, 18 September 2010. Had the race been on a track, Johnson would have come close to lapping the field; her 18:39 winning time put her nearly 400 meters ahead of the runner up, Kelly Stevens, who covered the course in 20:07. Micah Adriani ran 20:41 for third place, while the top master runner for the women, Jane Johnson, placed fourth overall in 21:03.

The men's race was somewhat closer, with Jay Wallace keeping the leader, Vince Molosky, in sight for the entire 5K. But while Molosky could never entirely escape Wallace, Wallace was never able to actually catch Molosky. They crossed the line with Molosky in front, 16:34 to 16:42. Wallace finished as top master for the second straight year. Behind him, Gary Droze moved up during the second half of the race to beat out Daniel Lee for third place, 17:09 to 17:12.

Trying to find an appropriate way of recognizing women's running, the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival has experimented with a variety of formats over the years, including women-only events and separate races for women and men. The current format is to give the women runners a five-minute handicap, starting them around the course before the men. This meant that the leaders in the men's race were continually overtaking the slowest runners in the women's race. So while Lisa Johnson was running fast enough to lap nearly every woman in the race, Vince Molosky was experiencing the traffic of lapping every woman in the race. Fortunately for the fastest men, the course is open enough that passing isn't a problem. Athletes who record good times in this race can be justly proud--the course is USATF certified (FL00022DL) and loops through hilly Indianhead Acres neighborhoods.

Swift Creek girls and Raa boys win the "Battle at Tom Brown"

Leon County Schools opened the middle-school cross-country season on Wednesday, 15 September 2010 with the "Battle at Tom Brown," a meet at (you guessed it) Tom Brown Park. The Swift Creek Middle School girls won for the second straight year, scoring 43 points. The Raa boys also successfully defended their 2009 title, totaling the best possible score of 15 points.

The girls' raced first, two miles around Tom Brown Park. 2008 and 2009 winner Cece Williams having moved on from Deerlake Middle to Chiles High School, it was certain that there would be a new champion. Raa runners Rebecca Clendinen and Lindsay Hughes went to the front and steadily ran away from the field. Ultimately Clendinen took first and Hughes second, 14:24 to 14:25. Raa put four runners in the top ten, but you need five runners to make a team score. Led by Madelyn Horgan's third place finish, Swift Creek put all five of their scorers in the top 12 for their title-winning total of 43 points.

Several runners dashed for the front at the start of the boys' two-mile race, looking like they had come out of starting blocks. But they quickly learned that you can't sprint two miles, and swiftly faded. Soon Raa's Wil Luca and Sukhi Khosla were leading, and then Luca pulled away. At the finish line Luca had successfully defended his 2009 "Battle At Tom Brown Title," running 11:45 for the win. Behind him his teammates Sukhi Khosla (11:57), Jason Benn (12:10), Evan Francis (12:12), and Lewis Langston (12:23) took places two through five, making for a perfect 15-point score. Anthony Walker of Cobb placed sixth in 12:26, coming within three seconds of breaking Raa's monopoly on the top five and ruining their perfect score.

The Battle at Tom Brown was hosted by Swift Creek Middle School and directed by their coach, Mike Eto. The Leon County Schools' cross country season continues on September 22 at Fort Braden Park, on September 30 at Gretchen Everhart School, and concludes on October 6 with the championship meet at Apalachee Regional Park Trail.

Victories for Stansel and Godwin at the Partnership Cancer Fund 5K

Dusty Stansel finished over 600 meters ahead of runner-up Chuck Marshburn, winning the Partnership Cancer Fund 5K in Valdosta, Georgia on Saturday, 11 September 2010. Stansel ran 20:05 to Marshburn's 23:09. Valdosta's Jonathan Asbell was the top master runner, finishing third overall in 23:19. Angel Godwin of Valdosta was the top female finisher, placing fifth overall in 24:13, nearly 140 meters ahead of the second-place woman, Hahira's Jared Komatz (7th, 24:44). Kristy Johnson of Hahira was the third woman finisher and top woman master, running 27:04 and finishing 13th overall.

Billed as an inaugural event, the Partnership Cancer Fund 5K was a benefit for (surprise!) the Partnership Cancer Fund. The Fund helps Lowndes County cancer patients in need with their non-medical expenses associated with their illness and treatment. The race started and finished near McKey Park in Valdosta. 52 athletes completed the 5K course.
