Avenger not just blowing smoke at VSU Thanksgiving 5K

I don't think anyone in Valdosta is going to want their turkey smoked this year.

Five days before Thanksgiving, South Georgia is in the second week of being enshrouded in smoke from fires smoldering in the Okefenokee. In Valdosta you can see it and you can smell it. There's no break in the smoke when you go out for a run and there was no break for the 102 athletes who went out to race the Valdosta State University Relay For Life Thanksgiving 5K on Saturday morning, 20 November 2010. When the leader emerged from the haze it was the Masked Avenger, picking up his second win on the VSU campus in as many weeks. Seven days earlier the Avenger had won the Blazer Corps 5K. On this Saturday he ran 18:16 to win by almost 300 meters over Dodge Tomlinson's 19:22. Tomlinson is a sophomore at Lowndes High School, where just two weeks earlier he had been the fourth man on his school's cross-country team at the GHSA state championships. Tommy Willis of Snellville was third in 20:52 while Valdosta's Alice Smoot placed fourth in 21:04 to finish as the top woman and top master. Maggie Lane-Powell (8th, 21:49), another sophomore cross-country runner from Lowndes High, was the women's runner up. Valdosta's Hank Santicola (20th, 24:21) was the first male master.

LaBossiere schools the field at the ARM 5K

Florida A & M University philosophy professor Dr. Michael LaBossiere went to the front of the race almost from the word "Go!" and was never challenged on his way to 20:59 victory at the second annual A.R.M. 5K. The race was staged by the Florida State University chapter of GlobeMed on the FSU campus on Saturday morning, 20 November 2010. LaBossiere, who was also the fastest master runner in the race, finished about 150 meters ahead of the runner-up, Jonathan Nash, who completed the course in 21:38. The women's competition went back and forth during the race, but at the line Devin Joseph prevailed narrowly over Victoria Carasa to take the title, 22:48 to 22:51. Joseph and Carasa placed third and fifth overall respectively.

The race started at the top of Gallows Hill in front of the Westcott Building, proceeded west to the University Center and the low ground along Budweiser Creek, then climbed back uphill to finish again in front of Westcott. Thus each of the runners established a quick tempo on the early downhill part of the race, and then got smacked with an upslope on which it was impossible to maintain that tempo. In other words, it was one of those "challenging" courses that everyone likes to talk about. The route was marked exclusively with sidewalk chalk. GlobeMed at Florida State University donates all of the proceeds of the race to their charity, Alternative for Rural Movement.

Dickieson, Adriani leaders of the pack at Run For Rover

600 meters is a lap and a half around your high school track. Justin Dickieson won the 19th annual Run For Rover 5K by more than 600 meters, beating Alex Carico 16:57 to 19:32 in the Thomasville, Georgia road race on Saturday morning, 13 November 2010. Nine days earlier, Dickieson had finished runner-up in the FSECC 5K in Tallahassee. Carico, a cross-country runner at Brookwood School, placed ninth in the GISA state cross-country championships on 30 October 2010. Finishing just a second behind Alex, John Carico (3rd, 19:33) was the top master in the race. Marty Sanders was the second male master, placing fourth overall in 20:50. First woman honors went to Micah Adriani, who ran 20:55 to place fifth overall. The second woman across the line was Molly Rodriquez (6th, 21:27), with the third woman's spot going to Leigh Stauffer (10th, 23:33), a Brookwood cross-country runner who was 13th in the GISA girl's state meet. The fourth woman in and top woman master was Melissa Bruhn, who ran 23:57 for 12th.

A fixture on the Thomasville running scene, the Run For Rover 5K is a benefit for the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society. The race is run on the south side of Thomasville near Thomas University on a USATF certified course (#GA09039WC). Nearly 100 runners finished the 2010 race.

2010 FYRA Middle School State Cross-Country Championships

Daesha Rogers of Plantation's American Heritage Middle School ran 11:04 on a 3K course around Lakeland's Sun 'N' Fun Fly In to become the first ever Florida middle school cross country champion. Rogers finished over 100 meters ahead of her nearest competitor, Sarah Candiano, who ran the course in 11:27. Emma Rudman placed third in 11:35, leading Liza Jackson Prep to a total of 56 points and the team title. Rogers' American Heritage Middle School team was a close second with 63 points.

Kurt Convey of Miami's G. W. Carver Middle School was the first ever Florida Youth Running Association middle school state champion, running 10:03 for 3K. Behind Convey, Joe Thrailkill of the Altamonte Striders outfought Nick Jacobsen of Saint Andrews for the runner-up spot, 10:19.80 to 10:20.00. Led by Jason Benn (19th, 11:01), Tallahassee's Augusta Raa Middle School totaled 110 points to capture the inaugural team title, edging out Orlando's Central Florida Striders by nine points.

With 153 athletes finishing the girls' race, 196 finishing the boys' race, and every corner of the state represented, the first Florida Middle School State Championship can be regarded as a success. It's possible--and the Florida Youth Running Association is working hard to make this the case--that this will be the first of many years of state title meets, stretching far into the future. But it's also possible that the Florida Middle School State Meet will not continue, and this championship will become an obscure footnote of Florida athletic history--much like the girls' high school state track and field championships held in Tallahassee in the 1920s, or the largely-forgotten events hosted by the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association from 1932 to 1968. Only the years will tell us the difference, and only the efforts of supporters of youth athletics will make the difference.

Hufstetler, Pace victorious at Veteran's Day Classic 10K

Pauncho Hufstetler ran 37:09 for a big win at the 2010 YMCA Veteran's Day Classic 10K in Bainbridge, Georgia on Saturday, November 13. Bainbridge's Hufstetler finished nearly half a kilometer ahead of Sean Hudson of Tallahassee, the runner-up. Hudson was the fastest master runner in the race. The women's title went to Tallahassee's Brook Pace, who placed 18th overall in 46:44. Ashley Daily (19th, 47:46) was the women's runner up. Bainbridge's Julie Harris outkicked Tallahassee's Janice Hochstein 51:48 to 51:49 for the top woman master spot.

Hufstetler had run 39:06 in January at the Bainbridge Kiwanis 10K, and 38:31 in April at Thomasville's Rose City 10K. His 37:09 win on Saturday continues a trend of successively faster 10K times. Pace's win was her second on the roads in the month of November, only nine days earlier she had run to victory at the 2010 FSECC 5K in Tallahassee.

The Classic starts and finishes at Bainbridge College, east of town. The course is USATF certified (GA98012WC) and loops through the Lake Douglas area of Bainbridge. The slopes are gentle, the turns are few, and the weather is almost always excellent, leaving runners with few excuses for running a slow time.

Barraco and Stout go the extra distance to win Cops For Kids

Master runner Steve Barraco ran 23:12 over a rugged course on the Cadillac Trail in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park to win the 2010 Cops For Kids Trail Run on Sunday, November 14. Barraco finished just ahead of Tony Berardi, formerly a distance runner at North Fort Myers High School (c/o 2008). Berardi's time in the race was 23:33. Stephanie Stout was the first woman finisher, placing fifth overall in 26:11, well ahead of women's runner-up Melissa Hooke (8th, 28:40). The third woman in and top woman master was Robin Gibson (11th, 30:44).

The Cops For Kids race was almost entirely reinvented this year. In 2009 it was a Saturday 5K road race through Lafayette Oaks. The 2010 edition was a Sunday trail run in Tom Brown Park. The 2010 race was billed as being a 5K, but the consensus was that it was somewhat longer, perhaps as long as 3-1/2 miles. Participation was also lower this year, down to 54 finishers from 76 in 2009. The race is still a fund raiser for Cops For Kids, Inc.

Blazer Corps 5K goes to Avenger and Godwin

When Valdosta's Masked Avenger crossed the finish line of the 2010 Blazer Corps 5K, runner-up Dennis Gardner still had over 400 meters left to run. That's the kind of margin of victory that the Avenger enjoyed in beating Gardner 18:01 to 19:45 in the 13 November 2010 race through the streets of Valdosta. Angel Godwin was not quite as far ahead of her rivals in the women's division, but she still was the fastest woman finisher, placing 10th overall in 23:32. Not far behind, Jonelle Jimison (11th, 23:48), Emily Crews (12th, 23:50), and Kim Peters (13th, 23:51) fought a close battle for second. The top master in the race was Valdosta's Bob Moon, who ran 24:57 for 16th. The fastest woman master of the morning was Beth Ford (23rd, 27:36).

The Blazer Corps 5K is an annual event of Valdosta State University's Air Force ROTC Detachment 172. Proceeds from the race go to benefit the United Service Organization (USO). At 36 finishers, the size of the field was considerably smaller than last year, when 91 runners completed the race.

Course comes up short, but not Guillen and Johnson

I just thought of a joke. A nutritionist, an exercise physiologist, and an engineer run a 5K. As it turns out all three are disappointed with the time they ran, and are determined to do something about it. Some time later they meet again and compare notes.

"I was successful, and it only took me two months," reports the nutritionist. "I changed to a strict diet, low in fats, high in complex carbohydrates, and rich in lean protein. This changed my body type so that I was able to run a minute faster."

"I also lowered my time, and it only took me a month," said the exercise physiologist. "I changed my training to include strenuous interval sessions on the track, and tapered carefully before my race. I ended up running two minutes faster."

"That's nothing," said the engineer. "I went back the very next day and ran three minutes faster."

"That's impossible!" declared the excercise physiologist.

"How did you do it?" asked the nutritionist.

"Oh, I made the course shorter," explained the engineer.

Okay, that one needs some work. But it's what popped into my head at the Engineers Without Borders 5K in Tallahassee on Sunday, 14 November 2010. That race uses almost the same USATF certified course through Innovation Park as the Bowlegs 5K and the Steven Gey 5K, but alters the start and finish so that the race falls nearly 100 meters short of 5K. It's the kind of thing that makes you think of jokes about "engineering solutions." How does an engineer guarantee runners a faster 5K time? He has them run only 4.9 kilometers.

So far as the competitive outcome, though, Tony Guillen could have run a hundred meters farther or a hundred meters longer and still come out on top. Guillen went almost immediately to the front of the pack and was in complete command of the race by the second kilometer, going on to win in 17:29. Guillen was also the top master runner in the race. Behind him, Lisa Johnson had a lock on second place by the second kilometer and finished as runner up and first woman in 18:12. Just over one hundred athletes completed the race.
