Five days before Thanksgiving, South Georgia is in the second week of being enshrouded in smoke from fires smoldering in the Okefenokee. In Valdosta you can see it and you can smell it. There's no break in the smoke when you go out for a run and there was no break for the 102 athletes who went out to race the Valdosta State University Relay For Life Thanksgiving 5K on Saturday morning, 20 November 2010. When the leader emerged from the haze it was the Masked Avenger, picking up his second win on the VSU campus in as many weeks. Seven days earlier the Avenger had won the Blazer Corps 5K. On this Saturday he ran 18:16 to win by almost 300 meters over Dodge Tomlinson's 19:22. Tomlinson is a sophomore at Lowndes High School, where just two weeks earlier he had been the fourth man on his school's cross-country team at the GHSA state championships. Tommy Willis of Snellville was third in 20:52 while Valdosta's Alice Smoot placed fourth in 21:04 to finish as the top woman and top master. Maggie Lane-Powell (8th, 21:49), another sophomore cross-country runner from Lowndes High, was the women's runner up. Valdosta's Hank Santicola (20th, 24:21) was the first male master.
