Lake Park laurels for Avenger and Peters

4H9 June 2012 was the second Saturday of the month. For the Masked Avenger of Valdosta, Georgia, it marked the second Saturday road-race victory of the month. The Avenger clocked an 18:39 5K in Lake Park, Georgia, to win the Lake Park 4H club's second annual Run For The Revolution 5K. Just seven days before he had picked up a win at Adel's Daylily Festival 5K, just a little farther north on I-75. Tyler Thurman, a distance runner and rising junior at Lowndes High School, finished runner-up in 19:33. Third place went to the top master runner in the race, Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz, who ran 20:17. Just behind Mazurkiewicz was another Lowndes High distance runner, Caleb Coil, who finished fourth overall in 20:25. Lowndes High was also represented in the female division by Alison Peters--the rising junior was the fastest female in the race, placing fifth overall in 20:40. Valdosta's Alice Smoot ran 21:25 to finish as the second female overall and the first woman master. Yet another Lowndes High distance runner, Jacki Pinkerton, placed third in the women's division, crossing the finish line tenth overall in 23:01. A week earlier, Pinkerton won top female honors at Adel's Daylily Festival 5K. All these high school athletes remind you that cross-country season is not that far away.


71 athletes completed the second year race, which started and finished near Lake Park Elementary School. An additional 13 runners finished an associated "Clover Trot" one-mile fun run.

Avenger and Pinkerton win a bloomin' 5K

Call it central south Georgia. Call it south central Georgia. Or the south end of Georgia's I-75 corridor. Or the Greater Valdosta Area. Call the region what you will, On Saturday morning, 2 June 2012, the attention of the region's distance runners was once again focused on Adel, Georgia, just two weeks after the Road Kill 5K near Adel. This time it was for the 2012 Adel Daylily Festival 5K. And just like at that earlier race, Valdosta's Masked Avenger came out on top, clocking an 18:33 5K to top a field of 74 finishers. The Avenger had also won Adel's 2011 Daylily 5K. Sean McConnell of Adel finished runner-up in 19:08, trailing by about 150 meters. Anticipating her junior year cross-country season at Lowndes High School, Jacki Pinkerton won the women's division, placing sixth overall in 21:54. If the race had been on a regulation 400-meter track, Pinkerton would have come close to lapping her nearest challenger, Valdosta's Melissa Roe. Roe took the runner-up spot among the women, finishing 11th overall in 23:38.


The race was held in conjunction with Adel's annual Daylily Festival. Don't confuse this with the annual Daylily Festival in Gray, Georgia, which also includes a Daylily Dash 5K. Adding to the confusion, both festivals were held the same weekend. Up until this year, though, Adel used the unique "Adelily" name for their events. Perhaps the decision to drop that brand should be reconsidered. But a pair of Daylily races is a tame problem compared to the proliferation of Turkey Trots and Watermelon Runs on the athletic calendar.

Potluck turns 15, Molosky and Showman turn wins

Katie ShowmanSaturday evening, 2 June 2012, Gulf Winds Track Club staged the 15th annual running of the Potluck Four Mile. Held continuously since 1998, the race is now as old as some of the high school athletes who are honored at the Chenoweth Awards ceremony that follows the race. It's a race of contradictions--a cross-country race that isn't held during any established cross-country season, a prediction run where many if not most of the entries are racing for speed. No one gets a T-shirt for running, but there is a post-race low-country boil--and while many runners have run out of room in their closet for race T-shirts, there are very few who can't find the room to put away some shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes.


Vince MoloskyThe race started from the Meridian Road Youth Athletics Fields at 6:00 PM. By then, temperatures had declined to a moderate 82 °F. Vince Molosky, the defending champion of the Potluck Four Mile, was the first of the 232 runners to reach the Miller Landing Road soccer fields, almost half a mile from the start. By then, Molosky was already ten seconds ahead of his nearest pursuer, Nate Kaiser. Molosky continued to pull away as the trails of Phipps Park took the runners down to Lake Jackson and back up again. With a mile to go, Molosky's lead had grown to 25 seconds. But during the hilly circuit of Phipps Park, Maclay School assistant track coach Stephen Cox had moved up through the field, finally overtaking Kaiser. Moving into second place, Cox began to reel in Molosky. Cox narrowed the gap but never closed it over the last mile. Molosky may have been looking back over his shoulder at the end, but he still crossed the line seven seconds up ahead of Cox, 22:33 to 22:40, collecting his second straight Potluck win. Nate Kaiser hung on to finish third in 22:55, followed by Jasen Fulghum (23:37) and Peter Kaus (24:20). Tony Guillen was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 24:34.


Micah AdrianiMolosky already had a ten-second lead crossing the soccer fields, but in the women's competition Katie Showman was only a few seconds ahead of Kristine Cox, Micah Adriani, and Angela Wable on that same part of the course. Showman's margin grew steadily throughout the race, though, and she ran 27:18 to take the women's title, placing 22nd overall. Adriani, the 2009 and 2010 Potluck women's champion, settled for the runner-up spot in 2012, placing 27th overall in 27:43. Kelly Stevens moved up to take the third women's spot in 28:25, while Cox ran 29:10 to finish as the fourth female. 2007 Potluck women's champion Jane Johnson ran 29:56, finishing as the fifth female and first female master.

But one sure way to not win a race is to not show up, and Rice was not on the starting line of the Memorial Day 5K on 28 May 2012, ensuring that there would be a new champion. That champion was Valdosta's Masked Avenger, who had been among the many runners finishing behind Rice the previous three years. The Avenger edged out Valdosta's David Burnett for the title, 18:33 to 18:42. Jose Castanon of Hahira took third in 19:51, and O'Renthal Kinsey of Ludowici was fourth in 20:33. The fifth runner and top master was Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz in 20:35. The first female finisher was Alison Peters, a cross-country runner and distance specialist on the track at Lowndes High School, where she will be a junior this fall. Peters finished seventh overall, running the 3.1-mile race in 21:38. At 22:59, the women's runner-up and top woman master was Valdosta's Libby Smith.


Rice was not the only runner absent from the fourth annual Memorial Day run. Tropical depression Beryl was blundering through the region, and some runners were perhaps convinced by Goretex-wearing fear-mongers on the Weather Channel to stay home and hide under the bed.

Linton and Roddenberry beat Beryl in Bainbridge

Stanley LintonTropical depression Beryl was bearing down on the Big Bend on Monday, 28 May 2012, the day of the sixth annual Memorial Day 5K Night Run in Bainbridge, Georgia. But Washington’s army hadn’t abandoned Valley Forge because of the weather, nor had the allies postponed the Battle of the Bulge on account of snow. On Memorial Day, with those historical examples to emulate, athletes could hardly be expected to give up a run due to the threat of a little wind and rain.


2012 Bainbridge, Georgia Memorial Day 5K Night RunSo the race went on, and by the 7:00 PM starting time the only tropical conditions were a few puddles in the streets. Before the runners reached the end of the first mile of the 3.1-mile race, Crawfordville’s Stanley Linton was out front, with Stephen Robbins of Cairo not far behind. It was looking like a renewal of their duel in the 2011 race, where Linton and Robbins had taken first and second. By the halfway point of this year’s race, though, the duel was all but over, with Linton having a commanding lead. He went on to win in 16:17, with Robbins finishing runner-up in 17:08. Donalsonville’s Myles Gibson was the third finisher and the first master, running 18:21.


Tiffany RoddenberryThe women’s defending champion, Paula O’Neill of Tallahassee, was trailing after a mile of racing, but during the middle of the race she passed her rivals one by one until she was leading the women’s field. While O’Neill was moving up, though, so was Tiffany Roddenberry. With less than a quarter mile to go, O’Neill and Roddenberry were running side by side going around the last turn on the course. Roddenberry prevailed in the end, 21:46 to 21:52, and the Memorial Day race had a new women’s champion plus a new women’s record. O’Neill was still the fastest woman master in the race, finishing 16 seconds ahead of third woman and second master Debbie Wittmer.


70 athletes finished the 2012 5K Night Run. Expect it back on the calendar on Memorial Day 2013. Beryl won't be there next time, though.
