Area performances at the 2011 Walt Disney World Marathon

When it comes to marathons, I personally prefer races hosted by track clubs, or that were founded long ago by gentlemen's athletic clubs or a local YMCA. In 2011, though, a few people expressed their preference by running a marathon produced by a major entertainment corporation. That is, 13,522 people ran the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando, Florida on 9 January 2011.


Quite a few runners from the Trouble Afoot! coverage area (i.e., the region within 100 miles of Tallahassee) chose to run in the mega-event and many did quite well. Tallahassee resident Colin Riley, a member of the Florida State University triathlon club, was the top finisher from the area, placing 54th overall in 2:56:40. Adriana Piekarewicz, a 2007 alumna of Maclay School, was the first female finisher from the Trouble Afoot! region, 250th in 3:17:15. The top master from the area was Arnold Gangwisch from Panama City Beach, 408th overall in 3:25:00. Kathy Watkins of Tallahassee was our regions fastest female master in the Disney Marathon, finishing 3034th overall in 4:14:00.


In another local connection, Jessica Crate was third in the women's division at 2:51:53. Crate is an alumna of the Florida State University cross-country team, having competed for the Seminoles from 2003-2007.

New Year, Same Mask

Behold, the Masked AvengerSaturday, 8 January 2011 was a whole week into the new year, but still early enough for Valdosta's First Race Of The New Year 5K. In an outcome that looked awfully similar to several Valdosta races of the year just gone by, the Masked Avenger ran to an 18:23 victory. Valdosta's Matt Triick took second in 18:56, while third place and the top master's spot went to Scot Gardner of Naylor, Georgia in 19:14. Gardner was followed across the line by Lowndes High runner David Jones (4th, 20:48), who edged out his teammate Trevor Sirmans (5th, 20:49) for the top junior spot.


Valdosta's Dr. Gretchen Bielmyer captured the women's title, finishing 12th overall in 21:46. Atlanta's Christy Kingsbury (14th, 22:25) was the second woman across the line, just ahead of Hannah Moorman (16th, 22:26) of Douglas, Georgia, the third female and first female junior. The top woman master was Stephanie Adams (36th, 26:43) of Jennings, Florida; Adams was the 12th female finisher.


As its name indicates, the event was indeed Valdosta's first road race of 2011, as well as the first race in Valdosta's Grand Prix series. The race started on North Ashley Street in front of Get Active Running & More and then looped around the streets of the Five Points area of Valdosta--a course used by so many Valdosta races that there must be a good map of it somewhere. 69 athletes finished the race.

Molosky and Rosen start 2011 racing right at Bowlegs 5K

In recent years, the Bowlegs 5K Run For Education has seen all kinds of weather. In 2009 race day morning was cold and wet. In 2010 it was below freezing and dry. At this year's race on 8 January 2011 conditions were almost perfect, with clear skies and ideal temperatures for running. 205 athletes--the most to run the event since 1988--were on hand at Tallahassee's Innovation Park to enjoy the great weather. The class of the field, though, was Vince Molosky, who took command of the race early and ran to a 16:38 win. Nate Kaiser was runner-up at 16:59, just ahead of the top master runner, Gary Droze (3rd, 17:04). Sheryl Rosen was the top woman finisher, placing 18th overall in 19:26. Kelly Stevens (23rd, 19:45) placed second among the women, while the first woman master was Nancy Stedman (48th, 22:00).


The race started at 9:06, a few minutes later than scheduled. By the end of the first kilometer, Molosky led the field. At two kilometers, Molosky was 14 seconds in front, while Tony Guillen led a pursuit group that included Nate Kaiser, Gary Droze, David Altmaier, and Justin Dickieson. As Molosky continued to build a lead, runners fell out of the pursuit group one by one as they gave up the chase. Finally, only Kaiser was left, finishing 100 meters behind Molosky.


For the women, three runners shared the lead after one kilometer--Sheryl Rosen, Kelly Stevens, and Micah Adriani. By two kilometers, the group had stretched out a bit, with Rosen leading Adriani and Stevens, with less than four seconds separating them. Over the second half of the race Stevens ran away from Adriani and Rosen ran away from everyone. Rosen crossed the line first, 80 meters up on Stevens while Stevens was another 80 meters up on Adriani.


Last year's champions, Stephen Cox and Lauren Switzer, were not present, declining to defend their 2010 titles. Switzer was racing at the 2011 Walt Disney World® Half Marathon in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, where she finished 1,022nd in 1:45:43. The following day Switzer ran the 2011 Walt Disney World® Marathon in 3:42:59, placing 1,114th and completing Disney's "Goofy Challenge" by finishing both races.


Larry Giunipero and Bill Hillison directed the 2011 Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship, the 27th annual edition of the race. Proceeds of the race benefit the scholarship fund of the Faculty and Friends Club of Florida State University.
