So you want to run the 2011 Peachtree Road Race

Atlanta's 10K Peachtree Road Race has grown so wildly popular that for the 42nd annual running on 4 July 2011, the ceiling on the number of entries has been raised from 55,000 to 60,000. The Atlanta Track Club expects even more applications than that, so a lottery system has been put into place to determine who the lucky 60,000 runners will be. On race day the system of wave starts first used at the 2010 Peachtree will again be in place, hopefully making the event an athletic contest rather than a mob shuffling from Buckhead to Piedmont Park.

I ran the Peachtree in the 1970s, but what runner in the south didn't? The race seemed too big to me in 1977, when over 5,000 ran. I was back in 1981, competing with some 25,000 Peachtree runners. That really seemed too big, and I haven't been back since. The race has only grown since then, and the Atlanta Track Club has tried to cope with the numbers with innovations like chip timing and wave starts. Still, it's an ambitious goal to first shoehorn 60,000 souls into Buckhead, and then squeeze the same 60,000 into Piedmont Park. College football game, for instance, handle that many people all the time, but only in venues especially constructed to handle such a crowd. Just one of the Atlanta Track Club's logistical nightmares is having enough portable toilets for 60,000 bladders at both the start and the finish of the race.

The first logistical nightmare, though, is processing entry applications. In 2010, online registration for the Peachtree opened at 1:00pm on Sunday, March 21. After four-and-a-half hours of delays, server crashes, and general frustration, 45,000 entries had been snatched up, and registration closed, with the remaining 10,000 entries earmarked for folks who submitted a paper application. Thus, the lottery. Atlanta Track Club will take registrations for ten days, from March 15 to March 24. There is no advantage in hovering over your computer, waiting for March 15, because it doesn't matter when you register during that ten-day period. All applications taken during the ten-day registration period go into the lottery.

There are ways around the lottery, of course. Three come to mind:
  1. World class runners are going to be invited to run anyway.
  2. If you lose out in the lottery two years in a row then you'll be guaranteed an entry the third year.
  3. Atlanta Track Club members are guaranteed entry into the Peachtree.
If you want to take advantage of that last one, become a member by February 28 and submit your entry application by March 14. Atlanta Track Club membership costs $35 per year.

Assuming that you get into the Peachtree you will be placed in one of ten starting waves based on your time from a Peachtree qualifier. According to the Atlanta Track Club, "a Peachtree qualifier is any race... run on a USATF certified course." Although there are more than a few such races in the Tallahassee area, you'll have to have run your Peachtree qualifier by the time you submit your entry application--i.e., before March 24. This limits your opportunities. Here a few possible Peachtree qualifiers:
  • February 6--Tallahassee Marathon (USATF #FL10098EBM)
  • February 6--Tallahassee Half-Marathon (USATF #FL09001EBM)
  • February 12--Run For The Cookies 5K (USATF #FL08011EBM)
  • March 5--Thomasville Road Baptist Church 5K (USATF #FL09036EBM)
  • March 12--Shamrock Scurry 5K (USATF #FL10021EBM)
Note that running a Peachtree qualifier doesn't help your chances of getting into the Peachtree. It just gets you assigned to a starting wave. You don't even actually need to run a Peachtree qualifier. The Atlanta Track Club will be happy to put you in the last wave with the walkers, the journalists, and the guys running in gorilla suits.

If all this seems complicated, uncertain, and more than a little bit of trouble, then maybe you'd be happier running a smaller race. Closer to home and at a cooler time of the year also might be more attractive. Peachtree has the numbers, but your mama would never want you to be fooled by the numbers. Your mama would say, "If 60,000 people jumped off a cliff, would you jump, too?" But as long as you do want to run Peachtree, you should be able to navigate the entry process. After all, 60,000 other runners are going to manage it; why wouldn't you be able to?

Molosky and Griffis run top 30K times on timeless Old Centerville Road

On Saturday, 15 January 2011 Vince Molosky ran 18.6 miles through the Tallahassee red hills in 1:51:48 to win the 2011 Gulf Winds Track Club 30K, his fourth title at the annual event in four years. The runner up at 1:58:44 was Justin Dickieson, who won the 30K in 2007, the year before Molosky began his reign. Douglas Bell ran 2:01:55, the third runner across the line and the first master. Heather Griffis was the top woman in the race, placing 15th overall in 2:17:15. The women's runner-up and top woman master was Jane Johnson, 20th overall in 2:20:00.

At first it looked like Molosky would be challenged for the title this year, as he and Stephen Cox ran side by side in the early miles. But Cox was running the 15K and turned back at 7-½ kilometers, leaving Molosky to finish the remaining three-quarters of the race alone and in the lead.

In the women's division, defending champion Sheryl Rosen had won four straight titles, but she chose to run the 15K so it was already clear that her reign would be ending. Jane Johnson, a seven-time winner of the 30K, led in the early miles. At six kilometers Johnson had a 40-second lead on her nearest challengers, Heather Griffis and Kelly Stevens. Griffis left Stevens, ran Johnson down, and by 23 kilometers Griffis was in the lead, with Johnson a minute and a half back. Griffis continued to build her lead over the remaining seven kilometers, ultimately finishing nearly three minutes ahead of Johnson, 2:17:15 to 2:20:00. Behind them, Stevens hung on to the third woman's position, finishing 22nd overall in 2:22:51.

The 2011 Gulf Winds Track Club 30K / 15K was directed by Jerry and Jackie McDaniel, who have been in charge of the event since 2006. Most of the course is just south of the Georgia state line on Old Centerville Road and Sunnyhill Plantation Road. Those two roads through the red hills region have been around since antebellum times, when they were carved out of the clay as routes to bring cotton to market. Except for the paved bits at the far south end of Old Centerville Road and the west end of Sunnyhill Plantation Road, the way looks much as it did back when the roads were new. The 1800s cotton fields have filled in with pine trees since, and the live oaks look even more ancient than they did when Victoria ruled England, but the red clay roads themselves haven't changed. Come for the distance, come for the hills, or come for the history. It's all here.

Looking ahead to the 2011 Gulf Winds Track Club 30K

January in Tallahassee comes with cool days, some of the best weather for doing long runs. It's appropriate then that January is the month of the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K, one of the longest races in the area. The 34th running of the event will be next Saturday morning, January 15.

After the switch to metrics drove the 20-mile racing distance into near extinction, 30 kilometers is the longest standard racing distance short of a 26.2-mile marathon. It's still not a common distance; there are only two 30K races in Florida and USATF hasn't held a national championship 30K since 1988. But at seven-and-a-half miles short of a marathon, a 30K is a good stepping stone on the way to the longer race. The GWTC 30K has been touted as such a way-station on the build-up to the Tallahassee Marathon.

Since its first running in 1978, the GWTC 30K has had sort of a gypsy existence, changing venues every few years. The race was first run in the Apalachicola National Forest on unpaved roads south of the Bloxham Cutoff, near the end of Springhill Road. From there the 30K moved to Natural Bridge, where the roads were unpaved and the sand was deep. By 1982 GWTC had moved the race to the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge, starting and finishing near the St Marks Lighthouse. The road was paved and the course was flat, but you could always count on a stiff breeze blowing out toward the Gulf of Mexico--i.e., in the runners' faces for the first half of the race. It was a a kind of invisible uphill. And at least in 1983, feral hogs wandered out onto the road during the run. It's a wildlife refuge after all.

The 30K returned to Natural Bridge in 2001, by which time the roads had been paved. In 2006, though, race directors Jerry and Jackie McDaniel moved the event to its current location on Old Centerville Road, where the race starts and finishes at Bradley's Pond. Except for a couple of miles of pavement at the start, the 30K is run on the red clay of Old Centerville and Sunny Hill Roads. The roads were first carved out of the hills in ante-bellum times to haul cotton to market, but some of the live oaks lining the way are even older.

The earlier race routes were all almost absolutely flat, but the current 30K course throws some challenging hills at the runners. The morning could be T-shirt weather or it could be frigid, and last year a light rain made for some sloppy running on the clay roads. Vince Molosky seems to like the new venue, though, having won the last three GWTC 30K races. Sheryl Rosen doesn’t seem to mind the Old Centerville Road course either, having won the women’s division of the 30K the last four years. This year expect about a hundred athletes to show their approval for the race by running with another hundred in the associated 15K event.

Jennings and Monk are the rapidest River Runners in Bainbridge

USMC Captain Richard Jennings raced to a huge win at Bainbridge's first road race of 2011, the seventh annual Kiwanis River Run 10K on Saturday morning, 8 January 2011. Last October Jennings had finished 16th at the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, running the 26.2-mile race in 2:36:20. Jennings time of 33:55 put him over three minutes ahead of Pauncho Hufstetler, runner-up for the second year in a row at 37:15. Chase Harris of Bainbridge's Grace Christian Academy placed third in 38:55, while the top master runner was Mike Simmons, fourth overall in 44:51.

For the second straight year Jessica Monk was the class of the women's field, successfully defending her 2010 title with a 49:15 effort. It was over a two-minute improvement on her winning time last year of 51:20. The top woman master was women's runner-up Julie Harris of Bainbridge, 12th overall in 51:15.

Area performances at the 2011 Walt Disney World Marathon

When it comes to marathons, I personally prefer races hosted by track clubs, or that were founded long ago by gentlemen's athletic clubs or a local YMCA. In 2011, though, a few people expressed their preference by running a marathon produced by a major entertainment corporation. That is, 13,522 people ran the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando, Florida on 9 January 2011.

Quite a few runners from the Trouble Afoot! coverage area (i.e., the region within 100 miles of Tallahassee) chose to run in the mega-event and many did quite well. Tallahassee resident Colin Riley, a member of the Florida State University triathlon club, was the top finisher from the area, placing 54th overall in 2:56:40. Adriana Piekarewicz, a 2007 alumna of Maclay School, was the first female finisher from the Trouble Afoot! region, 250th in 3:17:15. The top master from the area was Arnold Gangwisch from Panama City Beach, 408th overall in 3:25:00. Kathy Watkins of Tallahassee was our regions fastest female master in the Disney Marathon, finishing 3034th overall in 4:14:00.

In another local connection, Jessica Crate was third in the women's division at 2:51:53. Crate is an alumna of the Florida State University cross-country team, having competed for the Seminoles from 2003-2007.

And without further ado, the Trouble Afoot! area finisher of the 2011 Walt Disney World Marathon.
