Florida State University Army ROTC cadet Michael Magoulas won the second annual 2LT Justin Sisson Memorial 5K on Saturday morning, 21 February 2015. Magoulas ran the 3.1 miles around FSU's Tallahassee, Florida, campus in 16:59, breaking Zach DeVeau's 2014 event record of 17:38. It wasn't Magoulas's first time racing in Tallahassee; he had run on four Belen Jesuit Prep state championship teams from 2010 to 2013, and two of those squads had won their titles on the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course. Not far behind Magoulas, Adam Greenstein was runner-up in 17:10. Greenstein had finished third in the inaugural Sisson 5K in 2014. Third place in the 2015 race went to Andrew Young in 18:49, and Todd Root edged Daniel Millay for fourth, 19:11 to 19:14.As close as the men's race was, the women's competition was closer. Florida State cross-country runners Chantelle Brodie and Teresa Ristow crossed the finish line almost at the same time, with Brodie nipping Ristow 22:16 to 22:17. An alumna of Martin County High, Brodie finished 37th overall, while former Holy Trinity Academy standout Ristow was a fraction of a second back in 38th. The next two female finishers were also on the Seminole cross-country roster--Courtney West took third, placing 43rd overall in 22:44, and fourth went to Christina Phipps, 49th overall in 23:13.
302 athletes finished the second annual Justin Sisson 5K. The race is a memorial to 2012 FSU graduate Justin Sisson, a US Army infantry officer who was killed in action in Afghanistan on 3 June 2013. Proceeds of the Justin Sisson 5K go to benefit a scholarship in his name.
