Since 1967, Daytona Beach, Florida has hosted the Easter Beach Run, a four-mile race on the sands of "The World's Most Famous Beach" (as the Chamber of Commerce calls it). Over the years this has been a wildly successful event, run by some of the best distance runners in the region. If Daytona Beach can have a running event on Easter Sunday, why not Tallahassee?
Actually, Daytona Beach gave up holding it's four-mile race on Sunday quite a few years ago, and now holds it annually on the Saturday before Easter. Still, the event had already demonstrated that people will race on Easter Sunday--just as the Peachtree Road Race shows that they'll race on Independence Day and the Boston Marathon shows that they'll race on Patriots Day. And so at 10:00am on Easter Sunday, 4 April 2010, the Run For Life 3K was held in Tallahassee on the Florida State University campus.
Fifteen runners started from the Integration Statue on Woodward Plaza, heading west along the Call Street corridor before turning north on Stadium Drive. By the halfway point on Spirit Drive, Brian Corbin was out front with a commanding lead over Heather Griffis. The rest of the field was far behind and remained that way as Corbin crossed the line with the victory in 10:34. Griffis was runner-up and the first woman finisher at 11:03.

I'm glad you wrote this blog, Herb. One of the reasons is that I kept thinking a race on Easter Sunday must have been a typo. Not just for the fact that many people are worshipping on that day, but just ..... struck me odd.
ReplyDeleteBut I see that the turnout was double the Cody Climb so I guess an Easter Sunday run appeals to twice as many fans of the "who says it can't/shouldn't be done" type of race!
Paula,
ReplyDeleteGood weather helps, too.
Daytona's Easter Beach Run did well on Easter Sunday even back in the bad old days when there weren't very many runners. Of course, back then there were fewer races so runners had less choice about where and when to compete.
