Linton and Grayson take half marathon honors in Bainbridge

Bainbridge Half MarathonFlorida State freshman Stanley Linton is no stranger to athletic victory in Bainbridge, Georgia. The NROTC midshipman is the current defending champion of Bainbridge's Memorial Day 5K, having won that race two years in a row. On Saturday morning, 23 March 2013, though, he was tackling a longer event--the second annual Bainbridge Half Marathon.

Under threatening skies, the race started at 7:00 AM ET from Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge. Just hours earlier, Stanley Linton had been mixing it up in the 5,000-meter run in the FSU Relays on Friday evening in Tallahassee, running a personal best 15:32.50 and placing 12th in a crowded field of 47 runners.  After a night's rest Linton was on the starting line in Bainbridge, one of 147 athletes who would finish the half marathon. He would be the fastest of those, turning in a winning time of 77:28 and finishing 1200 meters ahead of the runner-up, Tallahassee's "Marathon Jack" McDermott. McDermott was the fastest master runner in the field, completing the course in 82:45. Not quite a minute behind McDermott, Bainbridge's Pauncho Hufstetler, the 2012 runner-up, took third with a 83:44.

Thomasville master runner Mary Anne Grayson took the women's title, placing eighth overall in a new women's course record time of 93:34. Laura McDermott of Tallahassee finished second for the women, placing 18th overall in 1:40:20. Last year's women's runner-up, master runner Debbie Wittmer, improved her 2012 time by almost a minute to 1:40:38, finishing 19th overall and third in the women's competition.

  1. Thanks for posting. I couldn't get the results on the page today. One more detail...the over 2 hour folks ran the last 3 miles in the pouring rain.

  2. I'm glad that you were able to make use of the blog! I expect there will be something in the Post-Searchlight this week. Thanks for the info on the storm! In Tallahassee that morning, the same weather put the FSU Relays on a lightning delay, and led to the afternoon session being canceled. The Education For Life 5K was lucky enough to miss the storm. It's good that the Bainbridge Half Marathon was able to go ahead, even if some of the runners got soaked.
