Butzin and Bruhl take Smoothie King crowns

The 15th annual Azalea Festival 5K not only saw a new pair of champions, but also a new name. The 14 March 2015 edition of the race was the Smoothie King 5K, with Dan Butzin taking the men's crown in 19:22 and Angela Bruhl the women's crown in 22:12. 52 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race in Valdosta, Georgia.


Butzin won by a comfortable margin over runner-up Colin Prinsloo that Saturday morning, 19:22 to 19:41. The women's competition was somewhat closer, with Bruhl finishing third overall in 22:12, just ahead of Valdosta master runner Alice Smoot, who was fourth overall in 22:24. Smoot was a past winner of the race, having won the women's title in 2011. Valdosta's Billy Taylor was the first male master runner in the race, coming in sixth overall in 23:10.


The name of the race might have been new, but as in past years the 2015 Smoothie King 5K was produced by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.
