The open of cross-country season was still a week away for the Tift County High Blue Devils on Saturday, 13 August 2016. Nevertheless, it was two Tift County harriers who came up winners that evening at the 27th annual Run For Love 5K. Blue Devil senior Eliud Mendoza was the overall winner, covering the 3.1-mile course around the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 19:31. Emily Golden, a frosh on the Tift County team, won the women's title for the third year straight, running 21:29.Mendoza and Golden weren't the only cross-country runners in the race. Cameron Watson, an eighth-grader on the Coffee Middle School team, took second in 19:55. Matthew Fisher, an alumnus of the the Tift County High program, ran 20:39 for third. Mitchell Sinyard was the top master in the race, placing eleventh overall in 21:48.
Gracie Woods, another Coffee Middle School eighth-grader, was second in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 22:13. 2013 Run For Love women's champ Ashlee Golden, a junior on the Tift County cross-county squad, took third in the women's standings, placing seventeenth overall in 23:24. Penny Peters of Tifton was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 21st overall in 24:28.
111 athletes finished the 2017 Run For Love 5K and another 39 completed a one-mile fun run. Proceeds of the event benefit the Tift County High cross-country team.
