David Jones and Ana Freitas were coming up roses at the Azalea Festival Run

Azalea BlossomAzaleas are blooming earlier in South Georgia, possibly due to milder winters. The flowers are often out in February now, with some azaleas showing color in January or even December. In Valdosta, Georgia the bulk of azalea blossoms still wait till March and the city's Azalea Festival. The early flowers are just a reminder to athletes to get ready for the Azalea Festival 5K. Valdosta's 21st annual Azalea Festival Run was Saturday morning, 12 March 2022, and David Jones won the event with a 19:47. Ana Freitas was the first woman in the race, placing twelfth overall in 27:43.


Hahira, Georgia's Aaron Farris took the runner-up spot with a 20:12. Twelve-year-old R. Thurston was third in 20:38. Steve Jones was the first master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 22:51.


Terry Cooper was the first woman master and second female finisher, Astra Weismore nabbed third in the women's standings, coming in seventeenth overall in 29:27.


75 athletes finished the 2022 Azalea Run. The race was hosted by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority.
