Leonardo Canete ran historically fast at Valdosta's historic Barnes 5K

Barnes Healthcare ServicesCharles Barnes, Sr., started Barnes Drug Store in Valdosta, Georgia in 1909. Perhaps he dreamed that one day his fledgling business would sponsor a footrace on the streets of Valdosta. If so, it would take a century to realize that dream. The company hosted the first Barnes 100 Years Five-Kilometer Road Race in 2009. By then, Barnes Drug Store had accumulated quite a bit of history, becoming Barnes Healthcare and establishing offices throughout the surrounding region.

Since 2009, the annual Barnes 5K has itself acquired some history. The fastest time at the race remains the 16:45 posted by Daniel Broadhead in 2010. The second-fastest Barnes 5K was run at the fourteenth annual race on Saturday, 15 July 2023. That morning, Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete won in 17:38. Kendall Folsom of Valdosta was the first woman, placing ninth overall in 24:13.

2010 winner Broadhead and 2023 winner Canete are the only two athletes to break 18:00 at the Barnes 5K. Patrick Wallace, the 2023 runner-up, just missed being the third. A junior on the cross-country team at Valdosta High, Wallace took third in 18:01--the third fastest performance ever at the Barnes 5K 6. Jacob Howington, a rising senior on the Highland Christian High cross-country team, finished third in 18:31. Quitman, Georgia's Chad Northcutt, the 2022 Barnes 5K champion, was fourth in 19:37.

Tamara Martin of Valdosta was the first woman master and the second female finisher, placing tenth overall in 24:42. Another Valdosta athlete, Katie Lancaster, placed third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 26:05.

76 athletes finished the 2023 Barnes Healthcare 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services. Look for the fifteenth Barnes 5K in July 2024.
