A surfeit of running photos

About four years ago I started drifting into running photography. It started out with taking pictures of friends at road races, then everyone at road races, and then it spread into cross country. Last week I even tried taking pictures at a track meet.

However, when I started out, I decided to put my photos on Facebook. Unlimited storage, a nice interface, and the photo tagging and commenting features sold me on the site. Picture quality was not the best, and the limit of sixty photos per album was artificial and slightly restrictive, but it was something you could live with.

Now, I don't get into the "new-facebook-versus-old-facebook" debates, because nothing can say is going to influence which version of Facebook is released. All the shouting is not only futile, but it gets tiresome the second or third time around, which is how many "new Facebooks" there have been already. However, I'm getting annoyed that every time there is a "new Facebook," all my photo album URLs change. Fixing dozens of dead links is never fun.

But I've broken down and done it, at least for my running photos. Maybe I'll also do it for the hiking pictures. Or maybe I'll just change photo sites. In the event that anyone is interested, here are all my albums of athletics photos going back to 2005:

2009 Tails and Trails 5K / 10K

runnersOver 600 runners left the Leon County Animal Services Center on the morning of 2 May 2009, determined to finish either the 5K or 10K course of the seventh annual Tails & Trails Run, a benefit for the Tallahassee Animal Shelter Foundation. John Robida was the first to climb out of the Lake Lafayette basin and finish the 5K, winning the short race in 17:24. Top women's honors in the 5K went to Kelsey Scheitlin in 18:59.

Women's 5K championThe 10k title went to Vince Molosky, who covered the long course in 35:07. The fastest woman over the long course was Sheryl Rosen at 41:34.

Both courses took the runners almost a mile through Tom Brown Park to an out-and-back section on unpaved trails through the woods. Leaving the trails, the courses followed the paved Goose Pond Trail to a point below the Animal Services Center, then made a short but brutally steep climb to the finish line. The trail portion of the 10K course was especially scenic, skirting the shoreline of Lake Lafayette. The lake itself was covered with fog the morning of the race, giving the runners the impression of being on a mountain trail looking out over a foggy valley. Unfortunately, the course is too narrow to comfortably accommodate the number of runners the event has attracted, especially the out-and-back sections of the courses--double-track trail which has to handle two-way traffic.
Sheryl Rosen
Hopefully, though, course wizard Dana Stetson can make an adjustment to the course that will preserve the beauty of the run while allowing the race to continue to grow and raise funds for the Animal Shelter Foundation. Perhaps a loop could be substituted for the out-and-back portions of the course?

FHSAA Region 1-3A 1600m Run, 30 April 2009

America loves the one-mile run, and America loves it's milers--Glenn Cunningham, Wes Santee, Jim Ryun, Marty Liquori, Steve Scott, et al. The mile is the only non-metric distance still recognized by the International Association of Athletic Federations, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association is missing a good bet by not running the mile and instead running the 1500m, which no true American cares about. Likewise, the Florida High School Activities Association is missing the same bet by offering competition over 1600m instead of the mile. Still, 1600m is only a bit over 9 meters short of a mile, so on Thursday (30 April 2009) evening I headed over to the Chiles High School track in Bradfordville to watch the Region 1 championships in the mile 1600m run.

The girls were up first. The Chiles runners--Lily Williams, Kaia Hampton, Kendall Andrews, and Carly Thomas--moved into the lead early and stayed there. Chiles is dominant in girls distance running, as evidenced by having placed five runners in the top ten at the state cross country championships back in November. Certainly, there was no one in Region 1 who could touch them. The top four runners advance from each Region meet to the state championships, and in the Region 1 1600, all four of those runners were from Chiles.

The boys' 1600m was somewhat more competitive. At the gun, Lippett William, a sophomore from Jacksonville Wolfson, flew out into the lead. His 400m split was reportedly 63 seconds, a trifle ambitious for a runner whose previous best was 4:54.71. The rest of the field ran at a more judicious pace, ignoring William's early charge. By 800m they had overtaken the early leader.

On the third lap, Matt Mizereck, a two-time state cross-country champion from Tallahassee Leon, moved up through the field and into the lead. Most of the pack remained bunched up behind him, but the field began to string out on the last lap as Mizereck pushed the pace. By 200m to go, only Fort Walton Beach Choctawhatchee's Hakeem Tarpley and Pine Forest's Donald Davis III remained in contact with Mizereck, but the Leon miler continued to accelerate. A dash down the final straight sealed Mizereck's win in 4:25.91, Tarpley and Davis trailed in 4:27.17 and 4:27.87. Chris Haynes of Jacksonville Robert E. Lee finished fourth in 4:31.07 to become the last state qualifier out of Region 1.

It was a good pair of races, even if neither was quite a mile. Maybe next year the FHSAA can be convinced to add the 9 meters and 344 millimeters to the 1600 to make it a true mile.

Some Palace Saloon 5K Numbers

Being co-director with Reid Vannoy of the recently completed 35th annual Palace Saloon 5K, I have been getting more than a few comments and questions about the size of the field this year. People seem interested in how the size of this year's race compares with earlier runnings of the Palace. The records of the race are somewhat spotty, so I can't say that it's the largest Palace Saloon 5K ever, but I can say that it's larger than any other I've been able to find a record for.

I also get asked about how the number of participants compares with other races in the area. This is a little bit easier to answer if you can agree on what the question is. I decided to compare the number of registered finishers in the Palace Saloon 5K with the number of registered finishers in other Gulf Winds Track Club races during the previous year (i.e., 12 April 2008 through 11 April 2009). I didn't want to use the calendar year, because then I would have to wait till the end of 2009 to make my comparison.

*Single race run in multiple sections.

I took the figures from results published at the Gulf Winds Track Club's web site, http://www.gulfwinds.org/. Because the Palace Saloon 5K is a single race, I've chosen to compare individual races rather than entire events. Thus, for example, the Women's Distance Festival 5K and the Women's Distance Festival one-mile fun run are listed separately rather than combined as one event. This seemed fair, and it also made the Palace's numbers look more impressive, so I went with it.

The only valid conclusion that you can take from this exercise is that I like numbers a lot.

Credit for the number of finishers at the Palace this year has to go to the runners who love this race enough to run it each year, and to the heroic volunteers who served the crowds at registration before the race and at the finish line after the race. These are the people who directly responsible not only for the size of this event, but for the smooth execution that kept a large race from becoming a large disaster. Hats off to ya, and I hope you'll be around for the 36th annual Palace Saloon 5K on 10 April 2010.

Bridge to Somewhere

There should be a bridge on Jackson Bluff Road over Munson Slough.

Historically, there has been such a bridge. Jackson Bluff Road ran west to Jackson Bluff, a prominence on the Ochlockonee River that's the site of the Jackson Bluff dam (a.k.a. the Lake Talquin dam). However, in the 1930s Dale Mabry Airfield expanded to the point that the road was cut by one of the runways. Jackson Bluff Road no longer needed to cross Munson Slough, so the bridge disappeared. Dale Mabry Field ceased operation in the 1960s when Tallahassee opened a new airport, and Jackson Bluff Road resumed its old route over the runways. However, instead of Jackson Bluff Road getting a new bridge and railroad crossing, West Pensacola Street was extended to meet up with the Blountstown Highway.

For automobile traffic, you really don't need a bridge on Jackson Bluff Road. Drivers can cross the Munson Slough on the Pensacola Street Bridge, or use one of the bridges on the roads that connect Roberts Avenue and Jackson Bluff Road. What would really be useful here is a pedestrian and cyclist bridge. This would connect the neighborhoods west of Munson Slough with James Messer Fields Park. It would also enhance Jackson Bluff Road's utility as a east-west corridor for bicycle traffic--a corridor that points right at the Florida State University campus and downtown Tallahassee. Finally, the Tallahassee-Leon County Greenways Master Plan includes a shared-use trail paralleling the railroad. The bridge would allow people to access the trail from Jackson Bluff Road on either side of the slough.

CSX might not be terribly happy about having a bicycle and pedestrian path crossing their tracks, but it would sure beat having another automobile crossing.
