Frank Merriwell's Races

In 1994 Ken Burns released his documentary Baseball, 23 hours of film. Or 18-1/2 hours, accounts differ. Whatever the figure, it is a mammoth production, one of the few docummentaries longer than Ken Burns' The Civil War. No one was expected to watch all of Baseball in one sitting; Burns broke the film up into nine separate programs which he called "innings," each covering a different period of baseball history. Now that an additional sixteen years of baseball history have gone by, Burns is releasing a tenth inning covering that period.

There was a companion volume to Baseball, a coffee-table book for very sturdy coffee tables. The pictures are wonderful. In the chapter on the 1900-1910 period there are some reproductions of covers from Tip Top Weekly featuring the baseball exploits of the fictional Frank Merriwell. If baseball was featured in the dime novels, surely other sports were as well? Perhaps even track, cross-country, or marathon running? Because of my interest in running fiction, I was curious enough to investigate. It turns out that Frank Merriwell himself was a track man.

Frank Merriwell was the creation of Gilbert Patten, who under the pen name Burt L. Standish wrote about 200 "novels" featuring the character for Street & Smith's Tip Top Weekly from 1896 to 1914. Merriwell was from a well to do family of the right stock, attended Yale for most of his literary existence, excelled as a scholar, and as an athlete won just about every contest he ever entered (I haven't had a chance to survey all 200 novels to find out if he ever lost anything). Outside of class and the playing fields Merriwell and his friends had marvelous adventures and solved mysteries. He always got the best of his enemies. I don't think I would have been surprised to learn that Merriwell was actually from the planet Krypton. In fact, it would have explained a lot. After Tip Top folded, Merriwell perhaps performed his cleverest trick yet by living on as a character in comic strips, comic books, radio, and film. He never made it to television. I don't expect he ever will. The time for such a flawless character has long passed.

At Yale Merriwell competed (and of course won) in baseball, football, basketball, fencing, rowing, and track. During the course of 200 novels he must have found time to try out most of the events, but in one of the stories that has made its way online, Frank Merriwell's Races (1903), Merriwell is a miler.

Races is not really a running book. There are a good 28 chapters of horse racing and wrestling and rowing and whatever before anyone even talks about running. But in chapter 29 conversation turns to an upcoming track meet (they call it a "tournament") at Madison Square Garden. Merriwell's friends are convinced that Merriwell is the man for the mile, but Merriwell himself is skeptical:
"I know I have a record as a base runner in a ball game, but the best base runners are not always able to make good showings in races. Besides that, base running is dash work, and this is a case of running a mile. There is a vast difference."
Some of the other characters also have doubts, and I did, too. It's a fast-twitch versus slow-twitch muscle fiber thing. Nevertheless, Merriwell is prevailed upon to try out to represent Yale in the race. He starts by mauling one of his schoolmates, Paul Pierson, in a five-mile time trial. Then he beats Yale's current miler, Duncan Yates, in an impromptu race to the train station. After that he actually begins training.

Naturally, some folks resent Merriwell's easy success (I wasn't that happy about it myself). Some of Merriwell's enemies play on Yates's jealousy and get him to fight Merriwell. In gentlemanly fashion, Merriwell tears Yates apart. Finally, on the eve of the big mile race, Frank's enemies hire a gang of ruffians to kidnap Merriwell and hold him captive till after the competition. Somehow they actually succeed in capturing Merriwell, but when he discovers that they're holding him because they're being paid, he offers them a greater sum of money to let him go. Freed, he shows up at Madison Square Garden just in time for the mile, which he wins with a dramatic kick in the closing yards of the race.

I find Merriwell's success in the absence of training a bit irksome, but the story takes place in an era when the world amateur record in the mile was 4:15-3/5. Merriwell and his Ivy League rivals wouldn't have been running have been running even that fast. And it is fiction. Readers of Frank Merriwell's baseball exploits were expected to believe that he threw a pitch that curved in two different directions--I have a much easier time swallowing that he could beat four other Ivy Leaguers in a one-mile race after a few weeks of working out.

As an author, Patten isn't dependable on conveying the necessity of hard work and training as a foundation for athletic success. Can we use him as a source for historical detail from the period during which he was writing? It would be great if we could. For instance, when Pierson takes Merriwell on a run off the Yale campus, Patten writes: "Along the streets of New Haven they went, attracting but little attention, as it was not an uncommon sight at that season to see some of the college lads taking a night run in that manner." I thought that this was exciting evidence that nearly eight decades before the running boom there was a place where runners were not regarded as freakish. But then I learned that Patten had never been to Yale, had never in fact attended any college, and only put Merriwell at Yale on the direction of his editor at Street and Smith.

But there is one bit of literary history that we can get from Frank Merriwell--that novel-length running stories were appearing in print during the run of Tip Top Weekly. John L. Parker, Jr., and Once A Runner were far in the future, but the genre of athletic fiction had been born.

Bowerman Shoes

I started wearing out a new pair of Nike Pegasus recently. I can't say that I examined them closely, but I did notice Bill Bowerman staring out of them at me. That wasn't remarkable in itself, but when I looked at my older pair, Bill Bowerman was missing. Below is a picture of the right shoe from the newer pair and the right shoe from the older pair.

You can see Coach Bowerman peeking out of the newer shoe but he has abandoned the older shoe.

I considered that Nike had come up with some magical formula to limit us to one Bowerman per runner, but it clear that the Bowerman image just wore off of the older shoe over time. This suggests a good rule of thumb:

When Coach Bowerman leaves your Nike shoes, it's time for you to leave them as well.

This may miss the actual lifetime of the shoes by a hundred miles or so, but at least it gives you something to go on. Absent the Bowerman Indicator, I'm liable to wear my boots as long as the airsole hasn't gone flat, the outsole hasn't completely fallen off of the shoe, and skunks don't complain about the smell of the upper. Anyway, who wants to run in a pair of shoes without a picture of a crusty old track coach stamped on the insole? I'm surprised that the other companies haven't introduced insoles featuring Percy Cerutty, Franz Stampfl, or Tom McNab.

I also like the hidden compartment in the sole of the Pegasus. It's the perfect size for smuggling gold, drugs, or diamonds, or for a Sardaukar to keep a coil of piano wire in case he's stripped of all other weapons. Not that I'd use it for any of those things. I recommend keeping bus fare stashed in there just in case a run goes really, really bad.

Brannen and Harvey champs at Trojan Pride 5K

Heading a field of over a hundred runners, Nate Brannen ran 15:51 through Tom Brown Park to win the Trojan Pride 5K on Saturday morning, 14 August 2010. Brannen crossed the finish line more than 200 meters ahead of runner-up Kevin Sullivan, a Florida State University track coach and Brannen's partner in Capital City Runners. Lincoln High School sophomore Trevor Touchton was another 300 meters back in third place at 17:49. David Knauf won master runner honors, placing 16th in 22:19. Karen Harvey took the women's title, finishing ninth overall in 19:51. Harvey is the women's head track coach at FSU. Brook Pace was second for the women, 22nd overall in 24:00. The third woman in and top woman master was Kirsten Baggett (25th, 24:25).

The course was not quite cross-country but certainly not a road race, incorporating paved and unpaved trails and roads, grass, clay, mud, and a finish on Lincoln High School's Jimmy Everett Track. The route used two separate loops through the park but still managed to have runners going in both directions on the same part of the Goose Pond Trail at the same time.

The Trojan Pride 5K was a fundraiser for Lincoln High School Trojan athletics. With charming optimism it was labeled the "first annual," so look for it again in 2011.

Racing at the Witching Hour

Unless it’s absolutely necessary, I don’t like running in the dark. I trip and fall well enough in full light, so I don’t really need darkness.

Racing is another matter, though. For as long as tracks have been lit, track meets have been scheduled at night. Road races are also occasionally scheduled at night, too. This isn’t a problem as long as the streets are well lit. If you run late enough there will be less auto traffic to deal with, and during the summer months weather can be cooler for night races. And if you’re going to race at night, why not Midnight?

Many races do just that. Most notoriously, in New York City the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run takes runners on a four-mile tour of Central Park, starting at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Call it crazy, but it beats hanging around Times Square courting pickpockets and frostbite.

It doesn’t have to be New Year’s Eve to be up and racing at Midnight. In Dunedin, Florida the Kiwanis Midnight 10K has started at the moment the calendar turned to July 4 for each of the past 31 years. Luminaria light the runners’ way over the causeway to Honeymoon Island.

A little closer to Tallahassee, Columbus, Georgia will host it’s 30th annual Midnight Express 5K on August 28. Thousands of runners compete in the Midnight Express, which also features live music and performances by the Columbus State University cheerleaders. Columbus likes its night runs, having also held the Miss Georgia Pajama Run 5K on June 19, starting just short of midnight at 11:30pm.

Even more in our backyard is Panama City’s 31st annual Midnight Chase 5K on September 4. Tallahassee itself hasn’t had a major midnight race yet, but last New Year’s Eve Bobby York and some friends put together a small run that took place after the midnight fireworks at Kleman Plaza. Not many people ran, and it wasn’t a race, but maybe it’s the seed from which a major event will grow. If 3,000 people are running through the streets of downtown on New Year’s Eve in 2020, remember where it started.

US Forest Service's Back To School Special

The National Forests in Florida are having a "back to school" special this weekend, August 14 and 15. That is, the United States Forest Service is waiving fees in select recreation areas in Florida's three National Forests (Apalachicola, Ocala, and Osceola). Folks in the Tallahassee area will find it convenient to take advantage of free admission to the Leon Sinks Geological Area. Without going into a full trail report, Leon Sinks is a great place to take a walk. The trails are not a difficult hike; the land is piney woods that is all but absolutely flat. The trail is unique, though, in wandering the Woodville karst plain, and along the way you can see several sinkholes including Big Dismal Sink. There's also a river sink, where the waters of Fisher Creek disappear into the ground to wander the labyrinth of the Floridan aquifer.

Leon Sinks is the only site in the Apalachicola National Forest for which the USFS is waiving the entrance fee this weekend. In the Osceola National Forest admission will be free at the Olustee Beach day use area. In the Ocala National Forest fees will be waived for the Fore Lake day use area, the Farles day use area, the Lake Eaton boat ramp and pier, the Mill Dam Boat Ramp and Swim Area, and the Lake Dorr Boat Ramp.

Honeycutt and Utley take titles at rainy Run For Love 5K

Racing through pouring rain, Tifton's teen triathlon sensation, Hunter Honeycutt ran 16:29 to win a wet 21st annual Run For Love 5K Evening Run on Saturday, 7 August 2010. The race was held on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia. Honeycutt crossed the line a comfortable 120 meters ahead of his closest challenger, Darton College distance runner Adam Ross. Ross finished in 16:54. The third runner in and top master in the race was Todd Smoot, the cross-country coach at Valdosta State University. Smoot's time was 18:37. In the women's division the defending champion, Katie Utley of Tifton, narrowly defeated Valdosta's Alice Smoot, 21:29 to 21:33. Alice Smoot was also the first woman master finisher in the race.

It was 16-year-old Hunter Honeycutt's first win at the Run For Love; he had previously placed 23rd in 2006 and 8th in 2007. Honeycutt's biggest successes have been in the triathlon and duathlon. On 25 April 2010 he placed fourth at the USA Triathlon Junior National Championship in the duathlon at Richmond, Virginia. Honeycutt's performance earned him an invitation to compete in the 2010 ITU Duathlon World Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland on September 4.

A steady rain delayed the start of the 2010 Run For Love, which was scheduled for 7:45pm. Around 8:00 the race director decided that although the rain wasn't going to relent, the sun was going to go down, and sent the runners on their way at 8:05. If people were scared off by the weather it wasn't reflected in the numbers; the 147 finishers in the 2010 race is comparable to the other recent editions of the Run For Love. The race is put on by the Sunbelt Running Club and raises money for the cross-country teams of Tift County High School.

Cross Country for the rest of us

Cross-country season is approaching and young runners are preparing for it on the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. With increasing frequency during your runs you can expect to have to yield the trail to speedy mobs of athletes. But you don’t have to be on a team or spend half your day in a classroom to enjoy cross country. You don’t even have to wait for the season. There are plenty of races in the area that will let anyone get off the roads and into forests, fields, and some of the finest landscape of the Big Bend.

For instance, the Mike the Dog Five Mile is being run this morning in the Wakulla State Forest, where no one has ever raced before. A benefit for Cauzican Animal Rescue, the event also includes a Pampered Poodle 5K if five miles of trails is too much of a good thing.

On August 28 the Miller Landing Madness gives runners a choice of 8K, 5K, and 3K events. Either way you get a chance to test yourself on the hills of the Lake Jackson watershed in Phipps Park.

Among many other athletic accomplishments, Steve Prefontaine was a three-time NCAA cross country champion. After his untimely death in 1975, the Salute to Prefontaine 5K was established in the Silver Lake Recreation Area of the Apalachicola National Forest and has been run every year since, including this year on September 25. If you’re intimidated by the rugged course of the Prefontaine you might consider the second annual Quail Trail 5K, held the same morning on the grounds of Pebble Hill Plantation.

Runners also get a choice on October 9, the date of the Pine Run 20K at Tall Timbers and the FSU Invitational. A three-year-old revival of the Pine Run 20K run from 1977 to 2006 at the Southlands Experimental Forest outside of Bainbridge, the current Pine Run is held at Tall Timbers Research Station. People describing the course usually dwell on the brutal climbs up from the shores of Lake Iamonia, seldom mentioning the views of the lake, the Beadel House, venerable live oaks, and forest trails. Meanwhile, the FSU Invitational has been hosted by Florida State since 1972, and has almost always included an open race. This year the high school junior varsity races will be combined with the 5K community race, so you might find yourself in hot competition with a young runner looking to move up to the varsity squad. For the second straight year FSU is holding the Invite at Leon County’s Apalachee Regional Park Trail.

So those are some of the upcoming opportunities for the rest of us to do some cross-country running. If you’d also like to support the sport, consider turning out for the Coach Mike Run For Kids 5K at 8:00am on August 7 at Cobb Middle School. The race is a benefit for Leon County Schools’ middle school cross-country program and a memorial to the late Cobb Middle School cross-country coach, Mike Schneider.

Harris and Taylor win Trot; Walker earns Eagle

If you do any trail running, you may very well be in the debt of the Boy Scouts of America. Boy Scouts not only build trails in the woods but also construct trail amenities such as benches and bridges. The mile markers at the Lake Overstreet Trail were the Eagle Scout project of Daniel Smith. So it's not that surprising that Bainbridge scout Trey Walker would choose to put on a road race for his own Eagle Scout project-"Trey's 5K Eagle Trot" on Saturday, 7 August 2010.

Over 100 runners showed up for the event at Bainbridge, Georgia's Earle May Boat Basin on the Flint River. Bainbridge and Grace Christian Academy distance runner Kyle Harris won the race in 18:32. A little over 100 meters back in 19:16, the runner-up and first woman finisher was Kara Taylor, a Florida State University distance runner and Chiles High alumna. At 19:20 Greg Waddell of Bainbridge was third overall and top master runner, just ahead of fourth-place finisher Chase Harris (19:26). The first woman master was Julie Harris of Bainbridge, 15th overall in 25:09.

Proceeds of the race benefit the Bainbridge Humane Society. You wouldn't necessarily expect this to become an annual event once Walker make Eagle Scout, but you never know. Sometimes service gets to be a habit.

Kaus and Spragins scale "Mount Mitchell" at Coach Mike's 5K

Overcoming a wrong turn and a steep climb up Mitchell Avenue, Pete Kaus ran 19:21 to win the second annual Coach Mike's Run For The Kids 5K in Tallahassee on Saturday morning, 7 August 2010. Runner-up Mickey Moore was the top master in 19:28. The first woman finisher was Florida State University distance runner Lyndsey Spragins, 10th overall in 20:35. 80 athletes finished the event, a memorial to the late Mike Schneider, a cross-country coach at Cobb Middle School.

The race started behind Cobb Middle School after a brief address from FSU track coach Bob Braman. The runners circled the school on Lucy Street, Hillcrest Street, and Miccosukee Road. Kaus led the runners on Miccosukee, but missed the turn onto Mitchell Avenue. Stanley Linton, a Wakulla High distance runner, led the runners as they headed downhill on Mitchell Avenue to Winthrop Park and the mile mark. The course turned right onto Betton Road, then Marion Avenue, then Crestview Avenue, where the runners were to turn around and head back the way they came. Linton, however, overshot the turn and Kaus moved back into the lead. On the climb back up "Mount Mitchell," Kaus moved away from the rest of the field, while Linton lost places to Mickey Moore and Tyler Braman (3rd, 19:35). Linton ended up fourth in 19:40.

There were no wrong turns in the women's race. Spragins led the women from the outset, finishing over 300 meters ahead of the women's runner-up, Leon High distance runner Autumn Wable (14th, 22:00). Patricia Knauf was the first master woman across the finish line, running 26:12 to finish as the seventh woman and 30th overall.

The Coach Mike 5K raises funds for middle school cross country in Leon County, so the top middle school athletes in the race were also recognized. Cobb's Anthony Walker was the top middle school boy, finishing 13th overall in 21:52. Alexandra Wallace of Deer Lake was the first middle school girl, running 25:47 for 28th.

Support the Sport

When you follow road running you end up watching a procession of races putting the touch on runners to support some charity or the other. Holding a road race is as standard a fund-raising tool now as car washes and bake sales. Of course, if you do a good job producing a road race then you and your volunteers have probably put in hours of work entirely out of proportion to the amount of money raised. Unless you're also very good at scaring up sponsorship dollars--a talent like spinning straw into gold.

I'm not going to comment on how worthy some of the charities are. Nor am I interested in hearing someone make the case for their favorite charity. In fact, if you feel you have to defend it, how worthy is it really?

But I'm pleased to see that during August there are a rash of races that are actually raising funds for running. Some of these are in our area.

The first of these is the second annual Coach Mike's Run for the Kids 5K in Tallahassee on 7 August 2010, which raises money for middle school cross-country running in Leon County. The Coach Mike 5K starts at 8:00am ET on Saturday morning at Cobb Middle School. Race day registration will set you back $15. Unless you're a middle-school student, in which case you run for free--another great way that this race supports middle-school running.

Up the road and later in the day on 7 August 2010, the Sunbelt Running Club is hosting the 21st annual Run For Love 5K Evening Run in Tifton, Georgia. Proceeds of this race fund the Tift County High School cross-country team, which probably manages to operate on less money than the laundry budget of the Tift County High School football team. The 5K race starts at 7:45pm ET from the tennis center on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and race day registration is $20. You also have the option of running a one mile, in which case you start at 7:15pm ET and pay $12.

Back in Tallahassee, Florida on 21 August 2010, the Breakfast on the Track one-mile run raises money for Maclay School athletics. Held on the Maclay School track, the Breakfast on the Track is a track meet with one event--the mile. From 7:45am to 9:15am ET, section after section of the one mile is held on the track till everyone has run--nearly 200 athletes last year. Runners are divided into sections on the basis of their projected time for a mile. You can always sandbag and "win" your section, but in the final results all the sections are combined and places determined on the basis of time. Early registration is $12, race-day registration is $15, and discounts are available for school teams. However you register, you get a pancake breakfast with your entry (preferably before your race, but that's your choice).

The same Saturday morning as the Breakfast on the Track, Pelham, Georgia is host to the second annual Hornet's Nest 5K Road Race. Proceeds from this race benefit the Pelham High and Pelham Middle School cross-country teams (Pelham High is the "Hornets"). Race day registration takes place at Pelham High School and costs $16 ($12 for children under 12). If you pre-register you can still get that discounted by $2. This one also includes a one-mile fun run.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the fourth annual Memorial Day 5K Night Run in Bainbridge, Georgia was a fund raiser for Bainbridge High School cross-country.

Support our sport. Support these races.
