Close and Wittmer run away with Joyce's Jog

Joyce's Jog 5KTallahassee distance running icon Jessie Close ran 16:53 to win the fourth annual Joyce's Jog 5K in Donalsonville, Georgia on Saturday, 16 October 2010. Close, a two-time winner of the Joyce's Jog, was also the fastest master in the race. Stephen Robbins of Cairo was the runner-up, finishing about half a kilometer back in 19:05. The top woman in the race was defending champion Debbie Wittmer, a master runner from Blakely, Georgia. Wittmer placed fifth overall in 22:14, the fastest time ever by a woman at the Joyce's Jog. Misti Middleton of Colquitt, Georgia was the second woman across the finish line, running 25:26 for ninth overall. 59 athletes finished the race.

The Joyce's Jog is conducted as a benefit for breast cancer research in the memory of Joyce Payne Henley. Since it was established in 2007 the race has always been held in conjunction with the Donalsonville - Seminole County Harvest Festival.

Nesius and O'Neill lead the field at the 2010 AIDS 5K

"Are they using your course?" asked Michael Kennett. It was Sunday afternoon in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park on 17 October 2010.

I blinked and hesitated, before realizing that he was asking if the Big Bend Cares AIDS 5K was going to be run on the single-loop 5K course around Tom Brown Park that I had proposed some months ago. "No, I don't know if anyone is going to ever use that course," I replied. "They're using the same course they did last year, twice around a loop that goes north on the Goose Pond Trail and then back south through the woods."

"How far up the trail?" asked Kennett.

"Um...."

"Past the playground?"

"Yeah, a little past the playground."

So a few minutes later close to a hundred runners set out up the Goose Pond Trail, racing the second annual AIDS 5K. Dennis Keane set the early pace. About a kilometer into the race there was some confusion at the turn-around in that the leaders didn't know it was a turn-around--instead, they turned up another trail. Soon the runners were back on the right track and headed south through the woods, heralded by cries of, "Which way?" On the first trip through the woods paths Michael Kennett led, trailed by Keane. Michael Nesius moved up into third. After about three kilometers, when the runners had returned to the Goose Pond Trail and were on their second loop, Kennett still led, but Nesius was right behind him after moving past Keane into second. During the fourth kilometer, Kennett stretched his lead over Nesius to six seconds. But then the runners returned to the woods. On the second trip over the paths, Nesius closed on Kennett, taking the lead just before the runners exited the woods. Nesius continued to move away on the final stretch over the Goose Pond Trail, beating Kennett to the finish line 19:09 to 19:24. Keane was third in 19:55. Bennett Chesser (12th, 23:35) was the first master.

While the Michaels battled for the win, the Paulas fought for first female honors. Paula O'Neill led for much of the first loop, but Paula Thompson was close behind. Thompson took the lead on the second loop, and had opened a six-second gap around four kilometers. If that sounds familar then this should also--on the second trip through the woods O'Neill made up the ground on Thompson and regained the lead, which she held to the finish line, beating Thompson 23:42 to 23:55. Behind them Karima Anderson had moved up to finish third in 23:58. O'Neill was also the first woman master.

Roberts, Faletti take top honors at FSU Parents' Weekend 5K

"Bob Braman calls him 'The Danimal,'" remarked Brian Corbin.

Corbin was talking about the FSU track coach's name for Dan Roberts, who had just won the FSU Parents' Weekend 5K in Tallahassee on Saturday, 16 October 2010. Roberts covered the course around the Florida State campus in 14:59, finishing more than half a kilometer ahead of the runner-up, Hardy Moore (16:44). Javier Zamparelli was third in 16:56. Tactically, Roberts' race was simple--he started off faster than everyone else, ran faster than everyone else, and finished faster than everyone else.

For the masters, the competition was not so cut and dried. At three kilometers Brian Keno and Brian Corbin were still running within a couple of strides of each other. But Keno opened up a gap over the final kilometer to finish as first master, ninth overall in 18:35. Corbin followed him across the line in tenth.

In the women's competition, Meaghan Faletti led from pole to pole. An alumna of the Wekiva High cross-country team, Faletti ran the Parents' Weekend 5K course in 20:58. The women's runner-up was Allison Williams who ran 22:05, just ahead of the 22:18 clocking by the third woman across the finish line, Brittany Carey.

The race is one of the many activities that take place during Florida State University's annual "Parents' Weekend," which also include art shows, performances by the FSU Flying High Circus, presentations by FSU faculty, and even a football game. The course is unashamedly described as "a hilly 3.1 mile run through the FSU campus," and it does indeed take the runners from the low ground along Budweiser Creek to the heights of Gallows Hill behind the Westcott Building as it winds around the University. 453 runners finished the 2010 event.

Gardner stings Seppala at Honeybee 5K

Nobody but John Seppala ever wins the Honeybee Festival 5K.

It wouldn't be hard to come to that conclusion. After all, every year since 2003 Seppala has shown up in Hahira, Georgia on a Saturday in October, run 16 minutes and change, and collected a win. Well, in 2008 he ran 17:02, but that was also the year he won by over half a mile. Not that anyone ever finished within 100 meters of Seppala when the Honeybee title was at stake.

Until this year.

On 9 October 2010 Scott Gardner of Naylor ended Seppala's seven-year winning streak at the Honeybee 5K, running 16:46 to Seppala's runner-up performance of 16:59. Gardner and Seppala were also the first two master runners in the race. Gardner's only previous showing in the Honeybee 5K was last year, when he ran 19:19 for 4th. Gardner is no stranger to winning, however, having taken top honors in Valdosta's Break Bread Bun Run 5K this past July.

While the top two places in the men's race went to the masters, the same spots in the women's race went to the juniors. Ashley Powell placed 19th overall to win the women's division in 20:08, with second place going to Allison Peters (20th, 20:26). Both Powell and Peters are freshmen at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, where they compete on the cross-country team. Two weeks ago they led Lowndes to the team title at the Quail Trail Invitational outside of Thomasville, Georgia, Peters finishing second in 21:30 and Powell fourth in 22:23. On the roads in Hahira, though, their order of finish was reversed. Cathy Helms of Homerville, Georgia was the first woman master, finishing in 24:23 as the 12th woman and 60th runner overall.

The race was one of activities at Hahira's 29th annual Honeybee Festival, a celebration of Hahira's history in the package bee business. Dadant and Sons was one of the honeybee businesses that had offices in Hahira. Now there is a parade, a honeybee queen, and a 100-mile bike ride. And the Honeybee 5K.

Molosky and Johnson find their way to wins at Pine Run 20K

It was one of those mornings that's so beautiful that you suspect you don't deserve it, but you still go out and enjoy your run. Which is exactly what the 243 athletes did who finished the 20K Pine Run at Tall Timbers on 9 October 2010. 2008 champion Vince Molosky was back after taking a wrong turn in 2009; this time he ran to a 73:39 victory, the fastest time ever since the race was moved to Tall Timbers in 2008. Molosky finished 400 meters ahead of runner-up Daniel Lee (75:11). The 2009 champion, Jay Wallace, finished in third place as the top master in 75:48. Jane Johnson placed 20th overall in 90:21 to finish as the first woman and the first woman master. Johnson crossed the finish line nearly 200 meters ahead of the women's runner-up, Lauren Switzer, who was 24th overall in 91:09.

Since its revival in 2008, the Pine Run 20K has been run on the slopes north of Lake Iamonia on the grounds of Tall Timbers Research Station. The race is mostly off road and completely off pavement, sticking mostly to trails through the pine forests of Tall Timbers. Gordon Cherr directs the race, and seems particularly insistent that no matter how many people run off course during the race it is not his fault.

Del Monte and Wollrath the class of their fields at FSU Invitational

For the first time in the history of the meet, the Florida State Invitational Cross-Country Meet went to a two-day format. Day one featured the collegiate races, which meant that day two, Saturday, 9 October 2010, belonged to the high schools. No more waiting for the college races to be over with. No more ceding the best weather of the morning to the college runners.

Of course, it also meant that the high school boys had to be at the starting line waiting for the gun at 7:40am. Everything comes with a price.

The last of a light morning mist was just disappearing from Apalachee Regional Park when 162 athletes set out around the two-loop boys' 5K course. The leaders hit the 1600m mark in 4:54. There was a large group of them. Even at 3000m, eight runners were still within a step or two of each other up front--Holy Trinity's Joey Castagnaro, Daniel Moore, and David Kilgore, Chamberlain's Max del Monte, Collins Hill's Andy Gonzalez, Estero's Aaron Rojas, Mandarin's Eduardo Garcia, and Maclay's Patrick Swain. Max del Monte, though, was the one who fought free of the pack for a 15:36.78 win, just off of Matt Mizereck's 2009 course record of 15:34.27. Eduardo Garcia followed del Monte into the chute at 15:39.80, and then Holy Trinity's attack began. David Kilgore (15:46.29) and Joey Castagnaro (15:49.64) took third and fourth for Trinity, and Daniel Moore (15:55.36) added a sixth place to the team's total. But while Holy Trinity was waiting for their fourth and fifth runner, Estero put all five of their scorers across the line. Led by Aaron Rojas (16:06.41), Estero took seventh, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 16th for a team total of 62 and the Invitational championship. With 67 points, Holy Trinity had to settle for the runner-up trophy. No one can say it wasn't close, though, and Holy Trinity would have come out on top in dual meet scoring, 27 to 30.

Four runners got out in front of the field of 165 in the first 300m of the high school girls' 5K--Julie Wollrath of Holy Trinity was following Rachel Petrik of Fort Myers, Kacy Smith of Estero, and Stefanie Kurgatt of Maclay. At three kilometers Wollrath was only following Kacy Smith. After that, Wollrath ran out of people to follow and led the way across the finish line in 17:49.60, breaking Jana Stolting's FSU Invitational record for the course of 18:28.83. Smith followed, placing second 17:57.02, while the next two spots went to Teresa Ristow (18:17.09) of Holy Trinity and Kurgatt (18:42.36) of Maclay. Petrick hung on for fifth in 18:58.90, but then another Estero runner--Maria Frank (19:01.16)--crossed the line, presaging another battle in the team standing between Holy Trinity and Estero. But although Trinity had the fastest runner in the race in Wollrath, Estero once again put six runners across the line before Trinity's fifth scorer finished. Estero won the girls' team title with 43 points, and Holy Trinity totaled 53 to take the runner up position.

Wollrath, incidentally, is in eighth grade. It's early to speculate, but it's also impossible to ignore that she has a chance to win an unprecedented five FSU Invitational titles in a row.

With the morning growing brighter and a bit warmer, the Invitational concluded with two junior varsity / open races, in which you could spot a few coaches running if you looked closely enough. They, at least, will have first-hand knowledge of what it's like to run the course at the Apalachee Regional Park Trail. For spectators, if you stand at the oak hammock near the finish line you can see 700m of the 2500m loop, including the starting line. All together you can see about 1800m of a 5K race from the oak hammock. If you'd like to see even more, a short "coaches trail" leads from the oak hammock to the north side of the loop, where you can see the runners racing through the jungle along Lower Lake Lafayette. For a variety of reasons, you may never see a FHSAA state championship meet at Apalachee Regional Park. But from the level of competition at this year's FSU Invitational, most races at the state meet would be a step down.

Records fall on day one of the FSU XC Invitational

At 5:00pm on Friday at the Apalachee Regional Park Trail, Bob Braman's leaf blower ran out of gas.

"I got the loose dirt off of half of the course," declared Braman, Florida State's cross-country coach. "They'll just have to deal with the rest of it. It's not too bad."

Actually it wasn't bad at all. In fact, the footing was nearly perfect. But it's that kind of obsession with the course that has made the Apalachee Regional Park Trail one of the best cross-country venues for runners. Even though it was true that the recent dry weather had produced some loose dirt on parts of the course, the rest of the trail was firm and fast for day one of the 2010 Florida State University Cross-Country Invitational on October 8.

Racing started with the university women's 5,000m at 6:20pm. Lauren Smith of Stephen F. Austin took the lead almost as soon as the starting gun was fired. Smith was still leading at three kilometers, but Shelby Kittrell of North Florida had moved up onto her shoulder. The rest of the field was still twenty meters back or more. Kittrell broke away, going on to win in 17:34.65 a new course record for university women. Smith hung on for second in 17:46.26, just ahead of a late charge from Florida's Amanda Perkins (3rd, 17:47.66). Led by Smith's second-place finish, Stephen F. Austin came out on top in the team standings with 45 points, well ahead of the 82 scored by the runners-up, the hosting Florida State.

The university men's 8,000m started at 6:45pm. At least a dozen runners were in the lead pack at three kilometers. By the sixth kilometer, though, only three were still up front--Alex Schanen of Florida, Seth Proctor, and Michael Anderson of Florida. Over the final two kilometers, Anderson fell away, while Ben Martucci of Florida Southern fought his way back into contact. Schanen grabbed the win in 24:45.27, breaking the old university men's course record of 24:50.85. Martucci finished runner up in 24:48.83, and Seth Proctor took third in 24:51.03. Mitch Ownby of Stephen F. Austin, the defending champion and former course record holder, was 18th in 25:37.54. Florida State, led by Justin Harbor's fourth-place performance of 25:01.02, scored 41 points for the win. Their rivals from Florida placed second with 55 points.

With two records in two races, you could argue that the Apalachee Regional Park Trail was in condition for fast running at the Invitational, whatever Coach Braman's misgivings. There were few complaints and several compliments. And conditions promised to be just as good for day two of competition, the high school races on Saturday morning.
