Norton and Toskey beat 'em all at Barnes

Early leaders of the 2012 Barnes 100 Years 5KValdosta's Barnes Drug Store first opened in 1909. If old Charles W. Barnes had started sponsoring a road race back then, it would be one of the oldest in North America. Barnes and his successors were somewhat preoccupied, though, with building up the business into Barnes Healthcare Services, still based in Valdosta but with locations in three different states. It wasn't until 2009 and the 100th anniversary of the business that Barnes Healthcare got around to hosting a footrace on the streets of Valdosta, the Barnes 100 Years 5K. The event has continued to be held each year during Barnes' second century, and the fourth annual race took place on Saturday, 14 July 2012.

Nathan NortonFrom Barnes' Valdosta store on South Patterson, 80 runners started west on Savannah Street, soon turning north onto Oak Street. By 800 meters three runners were well out in front of the rest of the field--Nathan Norton of Americus, Caleb Coil of Lowndes High, and Tyler Thurman of Lowndes High. Norton pushed the pace, and the leaders dropped Thurman. Around the halfway point, where the race turned east onto Brookwood Drive, Norton had opened up a 30 meter gap on Coil. Norton continued to widen his lead as the runners headed back south on Oak Street. Thurman moved into second, catching a fading coil. By the time the race arrived back at Barnes Drugs, Norton was 130 meters ahead, crossing the finish line first in 18:29. Thurman took second in 18:58, while coil was third in 19:16. Kaleb Heninger of Fitzgerald, Georgia placed fourth in 19:29. The fastest master in the race was Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz, finishing fifth overall in 19:59.

Lauren ToskeyLeesburg, Georgia runners Lauren Toskey and Ashley Toskey led the women at the halfway mark, with Lauren a few steps ahead. Valdosta's Aubrey Suddarth was not far behind. But the only thing that changed during the second half of the race was the distance between the runners, and Lauren Toskey was the first woman back to Barnes Drugs, finishing twelfth overall in 23:23. Ashely Toskey was the women's runner-up, placing thirteenth overall in 23:40. Suddarth held on to the third women's spot, running 24:03 for 18th. The fourth woman across the finish line was the first master woman, Valdosta's Debbie Green, 21st overall in 24:43.

80 athletes completed the 5K, up from last year's roster of 67 finishers. Another six people finished the one-mile fun run.

Anderson and Daily KO the field in the Big Hits 5K

Dan AndersonI'd like to think that it's by design that the Goose Pond Trail in Tom Brown Park runs almost exactly 2,500 meters from its one end on Weems Road to its other end at Connor Boulevard. It would be great to believe that when the twelve-foot wide paved, multi-use trail was in the planning stages, someone pointed at the drawings and said, "No, put in another bend right there; we need another 100 meters to bring it up to 2,500." Actually, though, the length of the trail is probably just coincidence, but a happy coincidence, because going from one end of the trail to the other and back again is almost exactly five kilometers, America's most popular road-racing distance. Several events have taken advantage of that two-and-a-half kilometers of Goose Pond Trail to stage a traffic-free 5K race--most recently, the Big Hits Family 5K on Friday evening, July 13.

Ashley DailyThe race actually started from the middle of the trail, near Pavilion 13 in the park, heading to Connor Boulevard and back and then to Weems and back to log a full 3.1 miles. A starting time of 7:15 PM took the edge off of the afternoon temperatures, as well as giving runners a chance to make it to the race after work. Around 60 of them set out, with Elijah Sarmiento of Wewahitchka High School setting a brisk pace for the field. A little too brisk, as it turned out. Master runner Dan Anderson was a few steps behind Sarmiento when the leaders passed the mile mark.

2012 Big Hits Family 5K"We went through the first mile in 5:56," recalled Anderson. "I knew I was in trouble then."

Not as much trouble as Sarmiento, though. About halfway through the race, Anderson grabbed the lead as Sarmiento faded. Sarmiento kept it close till the two mile mark, but on the third mile Anderson started to open a gap. After that, Anderson ran unchallenged to the finish line, completing the race in 19:32. Sarmiento hung on to the runner-up spot with a 20:08, while Duane Evans was the third runner and second master in 20:23.

Melissa Hooke
Ashley Daily was the first woman finisher in the race, taking fourth place overall in 20:48. Daily led the women's field the entire race, crossing the line nearly three minutes ahead of the next female finisher, Melissa Hooke.

Sponsored by Ernie Sims' Big Hits Foundation, the event was a benefit for the Lupus Support Network in Tallahassee. 58 athletes completed the 5K.

Rice and Shattles celebrate America's birthday with Valdosta 5K wins

Chris Rice notched his second win in Valdosta's Independence Day 5K on Wednesday, 4 July 2012, running 16:57 in the fourth annual race. Rice has built up quite a record in his three appearances in the 3.1-mile race, winning the 2010 event and finishing runner-up in 2011. Just over half a minute behind Rice in this year's race, Wright Calhoun placed second in 17:32. Calhoun is a distance runner for Southland Academy in Americus, Georgia. Nathan Norton, an alumnus of the Darton College cross-country team, was third overall in 17:56. Tifton's Bret Wagenhorst was the fastest master of the morning, finishing eighth overall in 19:12.

Another Southland Academy athlete, Chris Shattles, was the first female in the race. Shattles' 20:18 was the second fastest time for a female runner in the four-year history of the Independence Day 5K, missing Jordanne Helton's course record by just two seconds. Behind Shattles, Valdosta's Alice Smoot was the female runner up and the first female master, running 21:00. Alison Peters of Valdosta's Lowndes High School clocked 21:18 to finish as the third female.

192 athletes finished the race, the latest event in Valdosta's Grand Prix series. The next Valdosta Grand Prix race will be the Barnes 100 Years 5K on Saturday, 14 July 2012.

Out with a bang, the final Firecracker 5K

Stanley LintonWhen Stanley Linton crossed the finish line in Greensboro on Wednesday, 4 July 2012, he was the last champion ever of the Greensboro Kiwanis' Firecracker 5K. After 30 years the Kiwanis are closing the curtain on the race. The Kiwanis have always been active in athletics in this area. For many years, the Kiwanis High School Track & Field Meet was a Tallahassee institution. The Monticello Kiwanis continue to produce the Melon Run 5K year after year. And since 1983 the Greensboro Kiwanis hosted the Firecracker 5K each Independence day. But no more.

30th annual Firecracker 5K, 4 July 2012The athletes who lined up to start the race at 7:30 AM on Independence Day knew that this was a good-bye race. You don't always know. Athletic event are born, live, and die, but you don't usually get advance notice of their passing. In college football, a bowl might call a press conference to announce that this year's game isn't going to happen, but by then the last game has already been played. With road races, the only notice might be when the race stops being scheduled. With Greensboro's Firecracker 5K, though, the 2012 entry form and flyer clearly stated that this year's race would be the 30th and last.

Stanley Linton (1st, 16:14) and Peter Wood (2nd, 16:28) take a turn with a kilometer to go in the race.Just like all of the last 30 summers, the race started 3.1 miles away from the finish line on the Sycamore Road. The Kiwanis organized a school bus to take runners there. Soon after the start Stanley Linton was leading the field of over 130 runners. But two years earlier Linton had led most of the 2010 Firecracker 5K before finishing runner-up to Cliff Skelton. Just past the halfway mark of this year's race, as the runners climbed out of the vale of Tallahassee Creek, Peter Wood passed Linton. From the three kilometer mark to the four kilometer mark, the two struggled for the lead, but on the final kilometer Linton broke away from Wood, going on to win 16:14 to 16:28. Behind them, Matt Harwood took third in 16:43, while Jasen Fulghum was fourth in 17:06 and Peter Kaus took fifth in 17:39. Bing Xu was the fastest master runner of the morning, finishing seventh overall in 19:07.

Nancy Stedman
Master runner and 2010 Firecracker 5K women's champion Nancy Stedman got ahead of the rest of the female competitors early. Stedman held her lead to the end, going on to collect her second Firecracker win with a 22:36. Allison Thumm moved up a few places during the race to finish as the female runner-up in 22:57. At 23:37 Martha Bademan was the third woman finisher and Sara Dickson was the fourth, running 23:57.

Linton and Alexander take the 10K at Dead Lakes

Stanley LintonRunning far enough ahead of the field to truly experience "the loneliness of the long-distance runner," Stanley Linton won the inaugural Dead Lakes Gator 10K on the roads outside of Wewahitchka, Florida on Saturday morning, 30 June 2012. Linton's time for the 6.2-mile race was 39:55. Tallahassee Judy Alexander was the first female and the fastest master in the 10K, placing fourth overall in 46:40. Male master honors went to Paul Plazarin of Blountstown, who was fifth overall in 48:14. Wewahitchka's Billy Naylor won the concurrent 5K race in 17:43, with Brian Corbin of Tallahassee taking top master honors in the short race with a third-place 19:30. Natalya Miller was the first woman in the 5K, running 20:48.

2012 Dead Lakes Gator RunThe Wewahitchka High School cross-country team can't be faulted for lack of ambition when it came to hosting the Dead Lakes Gator Run. The first year event included three races; a 10K, a 5K, and a one-mile fun run. The two longer races were started at 8:00am CT from Gaskin Park, east of Wewahitchka on the Apalachicola River. On the out-and-back course, recent Wakulla High alumnus (c/o 2012) Stanley Linton took the lead right away. Then former Wewahitchka High (c/o 2009) distance runner Billy Naylor closed the gap. What appeared to be developing into an exciting race, though, disappeared at two and a half kilometers as Naylor abruptly turned around and headed for home--he was running the 5K, while Linton was running the 10K. Linton continued on, pursued at an ever-growing distance by Thomas Howell of Blountstown High and Gauge Combs of Wewahitchka. Linton finished the race casually, pausing to chat with runners in the 5K field. 800 meters behind Linton, Thomas Howell maintained his lead over Gauge Combs to take the runner up spot, 43:23 to 44:07.

Judy AlexanderThe women's race developed similarly. Natalya Miller set the pace early, but she was in the 5K, and when she turned around at two and a half kilometer it became clear that Judy Alexander was leading the women in the 10K. Alexander crossed the finish line over a kilometer ahead of the next two female runners, Doni Lanier and McKenna Waters of Wewahitchka, both with the same time of 52:06. Hanna Plazarin of Blountstown High was fourth in 54:50.
