Johnson and Showman roll through the Red Hills in the GWTC 30K

Charlie JohnsonTallahassee triathlete Charlie Johnson blasted by Vince Molosky during the 20th kilometer of the 14 January 2012 Gulf Winds Track Club 30K, going on to win the 18.6-mile race by nearly 800 meters in 1:51:30. Sean Hudson was the morning's fastest master, finishing fifth overall in 2:05:13. In the women's competition, Katie Showman edged master runner Jane Johnson for the title, 2:17:38 to 2:18:01. 150 athletes finished the race, run mostly off-pavement on an out-and-back course on Old Centerville Road and Sunnyhill Plantation Road.


Charlie Johnson catches Vince MoloskyThe 30K runners were joined on the starting line by nearly 200 athletes entered in the concurrent 15K race, so that at 8:00am over 300 were shivering in the sub-30 °F air outside the Retreat at Bradley's Pond, waiting to run. Once the event was underway the 15K leaders set the pace for the field as the runners headed north on Old Centerville Road, while Vince Molosky headed the 30K entries. The smart money would have been on Molosky--he was the defending champion, had won the last four GWTC 30K races from 2008 to 2011, and his 2011 win had set the course record of 1:51:48. For a while the smart money looked safe; after seven kilometers Molosky was nearly a minute ahead of Charlie Johnson. But during the second ten kilometers of the race, Johnson closed on Molosky. At 19K Molosky was still leading, but just by a few steps. Then Johnson put the hammer down. By 20K he had broken contact with Molosky while continuing to widen the gap, leading by 300 meters at 24K. Johnson motored home to cross the finish line first with a new course record of 1:51:30. Molosky finished runner-up in 1:54:31, his streak of 30K titles ended at four. Grady Smith held off Keith Howell 2:03:57 to 2:04:10 to take third. For most of the race Sean Hudson and Mickey Moore fought a close duel for the master title, but Hudson ran away in the closing stages, placing fifth overall in 2:05:13, while Moore trailed in at 2:05:36 in seventh.


Katie ShowmanIt was a close race for the women's title for most of the 30K. Two runners got well out in front of the rest of the field--Jane Johnson, a seven-time winner at the GWTC 30K and the defending women's master champion, and Katie Showman, seven days after her winning performance at the 2012 Bowlegs 5K. While leaving the rest of the women far behind, Johnson and Showman never got far from one another. Just a few steps separated them most of the way, and with only six kilometers left to run Johnson was in front of Showman, but only by ten meters. With the finish line approaching, Showman took command and ran away from Johnson, taking the women's title in 2:17:38 and placing 19th overall. Still in sight, Johnson was 21st overall in 2:18:01, taking her tenth straight women's master title at the GWTC 30K and finishing as the women's runner-up. Over 800 meters behind Johnson, Micah Adriani (26th, 2:21:46) was the third woman in, while Kristine Cox (31st, 2:23:00) was the fourth female finisher.

Stanley LintonIt was a youth race in the male division of the 15K, with eight of the top ten places going to teenage runners, including eight area high school athletes. Wakulla High distance runner Stanley Linton surged to a narrow lead mid-race. Linton was never able to break contact, but nevertheless ran to a close win over Leon High's Will Henderson, 53:29 to 53:34. Last year's runner-up, Leon's Ben McMahon, was third in 54:11, while recent Leon alumnus Will Stanford was fourth in 54:50. Maclay School coach and master runner Gary Droze broke the youth monopoly on the top ten, claiming fifth in 55:14. Florida State alumna and 2011 Springtime 10K champion Pasca Cheruiyot outran Seeley Gutierrez 60:42 to 61:52 for the women's title in the 15K. Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson was the fastest female master and third woman finisher in the shorter race, 26th overall in 66:26.

Linton and Showman open 2012 with wins at Bowlegs

Stanley LintonLeading over 160 athletes touring Tallahassee's Innovation Park, Stanley Linton ran to a 17:10 victory in the 28th annual Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship on Saturday morning, 7 January 2012. Conducted by the Gulf Winds Track Club, the Bowlegs was Tallahassee's first road race in 2012. Karl Hempel was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 19:13. Katie Showman took top woman honors, running 19:27 to finish eighth. Nancy Stedman successfully defended her 2011 title as top woman master, coming in 32nd overall in 21:56.


Stanley LintonIf it weren't for the pavement, the view from the front might have led you to believe that you were witnessing a high school cross-country meet. One kilometer into the race, Wakulla High distance runner Stanley Linton was out in front, with Stephen Robbins of Thomasville's Brookwood School thirty meters back. Chase Harris of Bainbridge's Grace Christian Academy trailed in third. Linton was going away, though, and had widened the gap to over 100 meters by the end of the second kilometer. Harris, meanwhile, had pulled even with Robbins. While Linton built an even bigger lead, Harris took over the second position and started to run away from Robbins. Linton finished the race unchallenged with a 250 meter margin of victory. Behind him, Robbins was making a late-race surge, narrowing his deficit with Harris. Harris couldn't be caught, though, and finished runner-up in 18:06, with Robbins 30 meters back in 18:10.


Katie ShowmanKatie Showman had finished as the women's runner up in the 2011 Bowlegs, but in the 2012 race she would write a different story. By the end of the first kilometer Showman was leading the women, slightly ahead of Talllahassee's Anna Busby. Showman built on that lead, running 19:27 for the women's title, 18 seconds faster than she had run at Bowlegs the year before. 90 meters back, Busby was the women's runner up, placing 11th overall in 19:49. FSU student Alexis Beaudoin, a former standout on the Melbourne High (c/o 2011) cross-country team, ran 20:59 to become the third woman across the finish line. Among the master women, Nancy Stedman had grabbed a ten-second lead on Paula O'Neill after a kilometer of racing. The two runners remained about ten seconds apart throughout the rest of the race, and Stedman successfully defended her women's master title with a 21:56, while O'Neill lagged behind at 22:06.

Anna Busby
Held annually since 1985, the Bowlegs has become a fixture on the Tallahassee road racing circuit. Proceeds of the race benefit the scholarship fund of the Faculty and Friends Club of Florida State University, whence the name of the race--the Florida State University mascot is the Seminole, and Billy Bowlegs was an undefeated Seminole warrior. Credit that bit of history to the race's founder, FSU history professor Dr. Leitch Wright. Since Dr. Wright's death, the race has been directed by FSU College of Business professors Bill Hillison and Larry Giunipero.

In Tallahassee, 2012 distance running starts at Bowlegs

Billy BowlegsTallahassee's 2012 year of road racing starts on Saturday morning, Jan. 7, with the 28th annual Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship. The race is named for the Seminole warrior, Billy Bowlegs. Bowlegs fought the United States during the Second and Third Seminole War. Unable to defeat Bowlegs and his Seminoles militarily, the United States offered him cash to leave Florida. Bowlegs and his warriors took the offer and the Seminole Wars were over. Osceola, who died a prisoner of the United States army during the Second Seminole War, might have wished for as good a deal.


Fort Walton Beach also has a Bowlegs 5K, the Bowlegs Midnight Run. It's run at 10:00 pm instead of midnight and is named for British adventurer William Bowles, who was never called Billy Bowlegs during his lifetime (at least to his face).


Stephen CoxThe historical accuracy of Tallahassee’s race is due to Dr. Leitch Wright, a Florida State University history professor, who established Tallahassee's Bowlegs 5K in 1985. After Dr. Wright's tragic and untimely death, FSU College of Business professors Bill Hillison and Larry Giunipero took over direction of the race. Perhaps their own background gives them an appreciation for the financial accumen with which Billy Bowlegs and his adversaries settled the Seminole Wars.


The Bowlegs 5K was originally staged on FSU's main campus. In the 1990s the race was moved to its present course in Innovation Park, starting and finishing near the FAMU/FSU College of Engineering. Although never a large race, some fast runners have appeared in the Bowlegs 5K over the years. Looking through the past winners of the race, you can spot high school cross country state champions Matt Mizereck (the 2007 Bowlegs winner) and Carly Thomas (2008). Florida State track alumna Darien Andreu won the first Bowlegs women's title in 1985, and FSU track alumnus Thomas Kunish won it all in 2002. Perhaps the most impressive performance in the Bowlegs 5K over the years is the 16:54 course record, run by Irish Olympian Breeda Dennehy-Willis in 1999. That's not the fastest road 5K ever run by a woman in Tallahassee (Dennehy-Willis herself ran 16:31 at the Palace Saloon 5K in 2005) but it probably makes the top ten list.

Fast or slow, the runners will be lining up on Pottsdamer Street next Saturday. Their numbers may depend on the weather. Less than a hundred runners showed up for a frigid and dreary Bowlegs in 2010, while a sunny and mild morning brought more than 200 out to the race in 2011. Whatever the outcome or the attendance, another year of Tallahassee road racing will be under way.
