Valdosta runner James Marino won the first ever Honor Our Neighbor 5K in 2010, but missed the follow-up race in 2012. He was back on Saturday, 14 September 2013, for the third annual Honor Our Neighbor 5K, winning the 3.1-mile race through the streets of Valdosta in 18:43. Runner-up Ryan Sealy was over a minute back in 19:54. Third place overall went to the first female finisher, Makenzee Page, who posted a 22:25.The fastest master runner in the race was Rusty Jones of Valdosta. Jones finished ninth overall in 23:35. The first female master was Tifton, Georgia's Loan Goodman, 26th in 27:26.
98 athletes finished the race, which was hosted by the Valdosta State University chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the honors fraternity for financial information students. The 5K was organized to help minimize the financial burden faced by 10 year old Valdosta resident and cancer patient, Brody Shiver, and his family. The net proceeds of the race will be distributed to Brody Shiver and used by him and his family to assist in costs associated with Brody’s illness.
