McCann and Fitzgerald lead Holy Comforter victories at Crusader 3K

Lawson's CourseLawson's Course, the cross-country course behind Tallahassee's Holy Comforter Episcopal School, is a great place to just watch the grass. The acres and acres of soothing green framed by live oaks draw your eyes. It may make you think of getting up and bounding over the hills, but mostly you just want to sit and watch the blades rustle in the wind.

If there's a cross-country race going on, well, that's just icing on the cake.

Crusader's 3K girl's raceIt was some particularly good icing on Thursday afternoon, 20 September 2012, when Holy Comforter hosted its first Crusader 3K middle school cross-country meet of the season on Lawson's Course. The girls race started at 4:00 PM.  From the spectator area, you didn't need the contrast of red Holy Comforter uniforms against the green grass to see that there were a lot of Crusaders in the front of the field. The Holy Comforter charge was led by eighth-grader Molly McCann, who went right to the front and stayed there, clocking 12:39 for the 1.86-mile cross-country run. McCann was followed in by her teammates Julia Travis (2nd, 13:13), Gray Kinch (3rd, 13:26), Emma Travis (4th, 13:41), and Rachel Rumana (5th, 13:44), giving the Crusaders a winning 15 points, cross-country's best possible score. Georgia Slay (7th, 14:28) of Community Christian was the first non-Crusader to finish, but her team was one runner short of having a full squad of five scorers, so second place in the team standings went to Trinity Catholic with 56 points, led by Ellone Levy (8th, 14:30).

Crusaders 3K boys' raceSoon after the last of 50 girls had finished their three-kilometer tour of Lawson's Course, 48 boys had their turn at the Crusader 3K. Holy Comforter sixth-grader Johnny Fitzgerald grabbed the lead on the first straightaway, then spent the next 1.86 miles widening his gap on the field.  11:49 after the start, Fitzgerald crossed the finish line with a victory, over half a minute ahead of the next runner.  Behind him, Holy Comforter's Aaron Amidon outkicked Zachary Jackson of Cornerstone for second place, 12:23 to 12:24. Gannon Hundley of Trinity Catholic was fourth in 12:27, and then came Holy Comforter's pack of Jordan Pichard (5th, 13:19), Tripp Shippen (6th, 13:19), and Bryce Valveri (7th, 13:25), giving the Crusaders a team total of 21 points and the top spot in the five-team field. Led by Hundley's fourth-place finish, Trinity Catholic was second with 58 points.

Holy Comforter will host their next cross-country meet on Thursday, 11 October 2012, at Lawson's Course, starting at 4:00 PM.

  1. Herb,
Is that a substantially different course than this one from 2007? Some 2001-2005 HCES XC race shots here.

  2. John,

As near as I can tell, that was the course that was used on September 20. It gets some more use on October 11.

    Herb.
