Leading the race from the sound of the starting gun till the cheers as he crossed the finish line on North Broad Street, Atlanta runner Nathan Haskins won the 38th annual Rose City Run in Thomasville, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 25 April 2015. Haskins had also won the 10K race in 2009, but his 32:04 winning time in the 2015 race was faster than that earlier effort. In the last 20 years, only three-time winner Alan Black has run faster on the 6.2-mile Rose City course. Behind Haskins, four-time Rose City Run champion Chris Lake finished second in 32:45. It was Lake's best time yet in the Rose City Run, but it wasn't enough to keep up with Haskins."I came through the first mile in 5:15," said Lake. "He ran 4:55. He was on a mission."
As quick as it was, it was a slower pace than Haskins' last effort on the roads. Just six days before the Thomasville event, Haskins had been in Boston, Massachusetts running a 14:51 in the seventh annual Boston Athletic Association 5K, placing 15th in a field of nearly 9,000 runners.While Haskins and Lake raced with no other competitors around them, Leon High sophomore Matt Cashin and Roger Schmidt of Capital City Runners spent the miles fighting for third place. It was close to the very end, but Cashin held off Schmidt 34:31 to 34:35. Leon High junior James Dodson took fifth in 35:40, and Drew Rabun of the Savannah Striders was sixth in 36:04. Florida A&M University professor Geb Kiros was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in seventh overall in 36:30.
"Do you know Darien Andreu?" asked Beth Sweeny. "She told me she had won Rose City before."
That's an understatement typical of the modesty I remember from Dr. Andreu. I attended Florida State University the same years as Andreu, but even if I hadn't, I'd be sure to recall that in 1983 she set the Rose City Run women's course record of 34:57. 32 years later, no other woman has broken 35 minutes on the Thomasville course. Andreu is now a professor at Flagler College in St. Augustine, where she and Sweeny occasionally run together. When Sweeny returns home to Florida's east coast, during their next run she'll be able to tell Andreu that they are both Rose City Champions now. Sweeny won the women's title in the 2015 Rose City Run, finishing 27th overall in 41:32. Leon High junior Grace Lockhart was runner-up in the women's standings, coming in 45th overall in 43:41. Tallahassee's Sarah Dugas edged Paula O'Neill for the third woman's spot, 47:35 to 47:38. O'Neill was the top woman master in the race.It had been a cloudy morning in Thomasville, threatening rain. Except for a brief shower about 40 minutes after the start, though, the rain held off till after both the 10K and the following kids' mile. The awards presentation back at the Big Oak did get soaked, but you can't complain too much about the rain. After all, without rain Thomasville would have no roses. Without the roses there would be no Rose Festival. And without the Rose Festival, no Rose City Run. So let's agree that a little bit of rain never hurt anyone.
