Ryan Ziskinder |
The course for the 2024 Palace--first run in the 2013 race--starts with a 600-meter straightaway west on Jackson Bluff Road. Ryan Ziskinder took the lead near the beginning of that opening stretch, hitting the first turn four seconds ahead of the next runner, Henry Lewis, the ace of the Wakulla High cross-country team. Tre Pepper made the turn right after Lewis.
"I passed him not long after that," recalled Pepper. "About 1.2 miles."
Tre Pepper |
But Pepper never had a chance of catching Ziskinder. Racing alone, Ziskinder built up a lead of over 200 meters on the field.
"I just pretended I was out on a training run," said Ziskinder.
Henry Lewis |
Part of that training could have been practicing even pacing, Ziskinder had mile splits along the way of 4:58, 5:02, and 5:00. Add another half a minute for the final 177 meters, and you have Ziskinder's winning time of 15:27. Pepper took second in 16:12, and Lewis was third in 16:38. Tallahassee's Charlie Johnson was the first master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 17:11.
Just as Ziskinder was the only man clocked under 16:00 at the 2024 Palace, Ann Centner was the only woman under 18:00. Finishing just over 200 meters ahead of the next woman in the race, Centner posted a winning time of 17:18.
Ann Centner |
"I wasn't expecting to go that fast. All the speedwork has been paying off," said Centner. "My previous best her was 17:38 in 20:19, but I haven't been back since then."
That 2019 showing was also a win for Centner, making 2024 her second Palace women's title. Two other women's champs of Palaces past were also in the field--Amy Hines (2014) and two-time winner Katie Sherron (2021, 2022). Hines hit the first turn trailing Centner but ahead of Sherron. But Sherron overtook Hines and went on to finish as the second woman and first woman master, fifteenth overall in 18:01. Hines was third in the women's standings and the second woman master, eighteenth overall in 18:11.
Katie Sherron |
Falling in April, the Palace is still early in the racing season. Consequently, the Palace winners have more competition planned for the near future.
"I'm racing the Peachtree in Atlanta this July," said Ziskinder. "I've never run 10K before."
Amy Hines |
Centner, on the other hand, is a veteran of the ten-kilometer distance; she was the first woman in Tallahassee's Springtime 10K just two week prior to her Palace win. Her racing schedule includes an even longer race.
"I'm focusing on short races right now," said Centner. "But I'm planning on running Grandma's Marathon in Duluth in June."
Opening charge of the 2024 Palace Saloon 5K |
1254 athletes finished the 2024 Palace Saloon 5K, the most since 1314 completed the race in 2015. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race. Look for an even bigger event in April 2025 when the Tallahassee roads celebrate the 50th Palace.
