Hot runs for Elliot Butler and Hailey Morrison at the Red Pepper 5K

Saint George Island, a barrier island off the coast of the Florida Panhandle, hosted two races during the first quarter of 2025--the Half-Shell Hustle 5K in January and the Red Pepper Run 5K in March. Elliot Butler won the Hustle in January, and the Cairo, Georgia athlete was back on Saint George Island on Saturday morning, 1 March 2025, for the Red Pepper Run. He won that as well, running 17:35 and finishing more than 200 meters aheaad of the next runner. Twelve-year-old Hailey Morrison took first in the women's standings, placing ninth overall in 24:14.

Courtland Buntin, the winner of the 2022 Red Pepper Run, finished runner-up to Elliot Butler in the 2025 race, running 18:23. David Haire was the first master runner in the 5K, coming in third overall in 18:57.

For Hailey Morrison, the women's champ, the Red Pepper Run was her second race in two days. The previous afternoon she had run 6:22.68 for second place in the girls' 1600 at a Port Saint Joe High track meet. A seventh-graders, Morrison runs cross-country and track for Wewahitchka High. Addyson Paul, a Franklin County High cross-country runner, was second in the women's division at the Red Pepper Run and tenth overall in 24:31. Paul had also raced the 1600 on Friday at Port Saint Joe; she was fifth in 6:51.87. Eden Keene was the first woman master in the Red Pepper Run, the third woman and thirteenth overall in 24:49. Keene had been the 2024 Red Pepper Run women's champ.


148 athletes finished Saint George Island's 2025 Red Pepper Run 5K. The race was part of the 43rd annual Saint George Island Chili Cookoff.
