Jacob Dodson and Ana Wallace race to 2013 LCS XC titles

LCSMS XC Meet 2013After a one week delay, Leon County Schools' 2013 middle school cross-country championship came to Apalachee Regional Park on Wednesday afternoon, 2 October 2013. And when the racing was over, on the girls' side Swift Creek finished a perfect 4-0 season to reign as the top team in the Leon County School system, and Deerlake's Ana Wallace as the fastest runner. For the boys, Montford took the team championship, and Jacob Dodson of Raa won for the fourth time in as many races to claim the individual title.

Ana Wallace97 athletes from eight different Leon County middle schools were on the starting line at 6:00 PM for the girls' two mile race. After making the first turn in the race and coming on to the moat road near the 800 meter mark, Montford's Saige Kemeny was out front. Kemeny had won the first two races of the season at Fort Braden and at Montford, but she had finished second to Ana Wallace of Deerlake two weeks earlier at Everhart--and Wallace was barely a stride behind Kemeny, with Deerlake's Emily Molen right behind Wallace. As the runners wound through the Piney Woods, Molen moved up into second, while another Deerlake runner, Grace Jackson, had joined the leaders in fourth. At the 1600 meter mark Molen took the lead, but Kemeny, Wallace, and Jackson were right with her, with another five athletes nipping at their heels.

Grace JacksonWith 800 meters to go, the runners had to climb the most significant hill on the course, the Wall. Ana Wallace broke away going up the wall, while Molen tried to follow. Jackson and Kemeny fell back. Wallace widened the gap, bursting onto the finishing straight almost alone. Jackson surged to pull even with Molen, while Kemeny found herself challenged by Madison Rumenik of Raa. At the finish line it was all Wallace, first in 13:00. Jackson outraced Molen for second, 13:11 to 13:14. Rumenik inched past Kemeny at the line to take fourth, both runners clocked in 13:20.

Wallace, Jackson, and Molen gave Deerlake the first three places, but it takes five runners to make a team score. While the Deerlake squad waited for their fourth runner, Swift Creek put Arianne Neely (6th, 13:21), Asta Hemenway (7th, 13:25), Shayla Nguyen (8th, 13:26), Chase Merrick (10th, 13:39), and Emma Romuald (12th, 13:44) across the finsh line, giving the Wolves 43 points and their third straight LCS championship. The win gave the Swift Creek girls four wins on the season with no losses, and going back to the 2012 championship, the Wolves have a five-meet unbeaten streak. Deer Lake was second with 62 points and Montford third with 71.

LCSMS XC 2013The boys race followed at 6:30 PM, with 155 athletes representing nine schools. As that herd thundered past the 800 meter mark on the moat road, Benjamin Payne of Swift Creek was setting the pace, but Jacob Dodson of Raa and Seth Kemeny of Montford were just off his shoulder. Dodson took over the lead going through the Piney Woods, followed closely by Kemeny, who was just two seconds back after 1600 meters. Payne faded from contention, leaving the lead to Dodson and Kemeny. It was still a close match on the final straight and it stayed close all the way to the end, but at the finish line it was Dodson over Kemeny, 11:19 to 11:21. Robert Nowak of Deerlake moved up during the second mile to finish third in 11:44. Fairview's Joseph Jones also used a strong second half to finish fourth in 11:49.

Together with Kemeny, Montford's Matthew Newland (5th, 11:52), Tate Wallenfelsz (9th, 12:06), and Daniel Sweeney (10th, 12:07) gave the Mustangs four runners in the top ten. Miguel Ortiz (11th, 12:14) was right behind Sweeney, giving Montford 37 points, the LCS title, and a 3-1 season record. Swift Creek was runner-up with 66 points, closely followed by Raa with 69 and Fairview with 72.

Dodson and Wallace win at Everhart; Swift Creek sweeps the team titles

Ana Wallace and Saige KemenyAfter twice finishing runner-up to Montford's Saige Kemeny, Anna Wallace of Deerlake outran Kemeny 13:13 to 13:19 in the Everhart Invitational middle-school girls' two-mile cross-country race. Matthew Dodson won the following boys' two-mile contest in 11:46, making the Raa eighth-grader a perfect three-for-three on the season. The 26th annual event, held at Gretchen Everhart School, is the oldest race in Leon County Schools' middle-school cross-country season.

The middle-school girls' race started just after the Everhart School half mile run. There was a procession of early leaders, but by the mile mark Emily Molen of Deerlake was setting the pace for the field. Saige Kemeny, the defending champion, and Ana Wallace were just three seconds back. Less than half a mile later Kemeny took charge. Wallace followed while Molen fell back. When the runners returned to the schoolyard with less than a quarter mile to go Kemeny and Wallace were still close, practically side by side. With 200 meters left, Wallace hit a sharp turn just ahead of Kemeny and broke away, charging for the finish line. Kemeny couldn't come up with an adequate response, and Ana Wallace won going away in 13:13. Kemeny was second in 13:19 and Emily Molen third in 13:35. Chase Merrick of Swift Creek was fourth in 13:51, and Swift Creek runners Asta Hemenway (7th, 14:01), Shayla Nguyen (9th, 14:27), and Arianna Neely (10th, 14:27) joined Merrick in the top ten. When Swift Creek's fifth runner, Katherine Witchel (17th, 15:37) crossed the line, the team had 47 points and the third straight win for the 2013 season. Led by Wallace, Deerlake edged Montford for second place, 61 to 63.

Jacob Dodson and Seth KemenyJacob Dodson grabbed the early lead in the boys' race, closely followed by Seth Kemeny of Montford and Benjamin Payne of Swift Creek. By the halfway point of the two-mile race, Dodson and Kemeny had dropped Payne. Dodson continued to set the pace, but Kemeny was right behind him. With just over 200 meters left in the race, Dodson made a move that Kemeny couldn't answer, and Dodson dashed home to win in 11:46. Kemeny took second in 11:51. Robert Nowak of Deerlake overtook Payne during the second mile, taking third in 12:06. Payne was fourth in 12:29. Just as in the girls' race, though, Payne was the first of four Swift Creek runners in the top ten. Joined by Clayton Carlson (7th, 12:43), Dennis Majano (9th, 12:45), Yunus Kovankaya (10th, 12:46), and Franz Roeder (18th, 13:25), Payne led his team to a 48-point total and their first title of the 2013 season. Montford, after winning the team championships at the Fort Braden Run and Mustang Invitational earlier this season, was second with 59 points. Raa took third with 69.

Swift Creek girls and Montford boys keep winning at the Mustang Invitational

On Wednesday afternoon, 11 September 2013, the middle-school harriers of Leon County Schools visited the campus of Montford Middle School in northeast Tallahassee, Florida. The athletes were there for the first-ever Mustang Cross-Country Invitational.

Saige KemenyCompetition opened just after 6:10 PM ET with the girls' two-mile run. Montford's Saige Kemeny, victorious at the previous week's Fort Braden Run, set the early pace, shadowed by Ana Wallace and Grace Jackson of Deerlake. Kemeny pushed relentlessly as the runners toured the school grounds, and after a mile Jackson dropped back. It was just Saige Kemeny and Ana Wallace as the race headed into the woods. The gap between the two waxed and waned, but Kemeny couldn't shake Wallace and Wallace couldn't overtake Kemeny. The two were still just seconds apart when the emerged from the woods and started the final charge towards the finish line. It came down to a final kick, with Kemeny edging out Wallace for the win, 13:42, to 13:43. Behind the leaders, Swift Creek runners Emma Romuald and Chase Merrick had been moving up through the field. Coming out of the woods, Romuald and Merrick were third and fourth. Then fourth and third. And third and fourth again. The two sixth-graders continued their fight for third all the way to the finish line where Merrick prevailed over Romuald by less than a second, both runners clocked in 13:57. Montford, Deerlake, and Swift Creek each put three runners in the top ten. But Swift Creek put all five of their scorers in the top twelve, with Asta Hemenway (7th, 14:19), Shayla Nguyen (11th, 14:57), and Arianna Neely (12th, 15:01) joining Merrick and Romuald to give the Wolves 37 points and the team title. Montford placed second with 56 points and Deerlake was third with 66.

Seth Kemeny and Jacob DodsonThe two-mile race for boys followed at 6:45 PM, right after the end of the girls' race. Seth Kemeny of Montford was up front early, but he was overtaken half a mile into the race by Raa Middle School's Jacob Dodson. Dodson finally shook Kemeny during the second mile, running home to win in 11:56. Kemeny finished runner-up in 12:09. Deerlake's Robert Nowak moved into third late in the first mile, passing Derenzo Williams of Griffin. The two athletes held those positions, with Nowak finishing third in 12:17 and Griffin fourth in 12:30. Kemeny was followed across the finish line by his teammates Tate Wallenfelsz (7th, 12:43), Matthew Newland (13th, 12:55), Daniel Sweeney (14th, 12:57), and Jozsef Rohrbacker (20th, 13:20) giving the Mustangs 56 points and the team championship. Fairview was second with 68 points, while Raa squeaked by Swift Creek to take third, 78 to 82.

105 athletes finished the girls race and 155 finished the boys race. Finish line timing and scoring for the Mustang Invitational were provided by Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida.

From the brand new Mustang Invitational, the Leon County Schools' cross-country season moves on to the oldest event in the county, the 26th annual Everhart Invitational at Gretchen Everhart School. The Everhart Invitational is slated for Thursday morning, 19 September 2013.

Swift Creek girls and Montford boys win season opener at Fort Braden

2013 Fort Braden RunWednesday, 4 September 2013 marked the fourth annual Fort Braden Run, but it was the first time that the meet was the season opener  for Leon County Schools' middle-school cross-country teams. For a while it looked like the meet might not happen at all. At 6:00 PM, the scheduled starting time of the first race, lightning flashed and thunder rumbled in the skies over Fort Braden Park. The meet went into weather delay.

Saige KemenyEventually, though, conditions cleared up enough for the delay to be lifted, and the girls' two mile race was allowed to start at 6:40. Neither Chase Merrick of Swift Creek, Saige Kemeny of Montford, nor Ana Wallace of Deer Lake were setting the early pace when the runners left the park to circle the grounds of Fort Braden School. They were nevertheless the leaders when they returned to the park for the last 600 meters of the race. Merrick was first back into the park. She had won the Miller Landing Madness 3K eleven days earlier, but as a sixth grader this was her first time racing at Fort Braden. Saige Kemeny had run the race in 2012 and Ana Wallace in both 2011 and 2012. Perhaps it was that extra bit of experience that allowed them to overtake Merrick in the last 200 meter. Kemeny went on to win in 13:51, with Wallace second in 13:56 and Merrick third in 14:01. But Merrick was joined in the top 14 by Swift Creek runners Emma Romuald (5th, 14:32), Asta Hemenway (9th, 15:17), Arianna Neely (13th, 15:34), and Katherine Witchel (14th, 16:10) giving Swift Creek 44 points and the team title. Deer Lake was second with 54 points and the defending champs from Montford were third with 60.

Jacob DodsonThe inclement weather was only a memory when the boys started racing. Griffin's Derenzo Williams led the field out of the park and onto the ground of Fort Braden School, but his fast early pace had been too optimistic. By the time the athletes returned to the park for the final 600 meters, Williams had been overtaken and Raa's Jacob Dodson was out front. Eighth in the 2012 Fort Braden Run, Dodson continued to lengthen his lead all the way to finish line, which he crossed in a winning 12:15. Seth Kemeny was runner-up in 12:44 and Daniel Sweeney third in 12:50, both runners representing Montford. Kemeny and Sweeney were joined in the top ten by their teammates Tate Wallenfelsz (5th, 13:11) and Matthew Newland (7th, 13:13). Once Montford's Jozsef Rohrbacher (21st, 13:58) was across the finish line, the Mustangs had 38 points and the team title. Led by Dodson, Raa was second with 68 points. There was a logjam around third place with defending champs Swift Creek scoring 84 to prevail narrowly over Deer Lake (85) and Fairview (87).

The Leon County Schools' 2013 middle school cross-country season continues with the Montford Middle School Run on September 11, the Everhart Invitational at Gretchen Everhart School on September 19, and concludes with the LCS Middle School XC Championship at Apalachee Regional Park on September 25.

Harris and Khosla take on all challengers at the Challenge

Madison HarrisFrom 2006 to 2011 Godby's Cougar Challenge marked the start of high school cross-country season in Florida's Big Bend. The meet treated athletes to a, well, challenging course on the slopes and trails of Tallahassee's Phipps Park. The Cougar Challenge went missing in 2012, but it was back on the calendar in 2013, so the harriers were back in Phipps Park on August 31.

Godby Cougar Cross-Country ChallengeCompetition opened with the 5K for high school girls at 8:00 AM. Running through fog, Wakulla High senior Madison Harris had the lead by midway through the second kilometer, with Meagan Giddens of Taylor County and Margaret Wiedeman following closely. The race didn't stay close, though, as Harris steadily widened the gap en route to a 20:35 win. Sophomore Giddens was second in 21:09, and Margaret Wiedeman third in 22:14. As Taylor County's sole entry, Giddens didn't count in the team standings, giving the Wakulla girls three points for their first two runners, the strongest start possible. But while Wakulla waited for its third runner, Leon High put Gray Kinch (4th, 22:44), Zoe Sheldon (5th, 22:47), Audrey Dogan (6th, 23:00), and Grace Lockhart (7th, 23:00) across the line. Add Mary Dixon (10th, 23:12) and Leon had all five scorers in the top ten, giving the Lions a mathematically unbeatable 27 points and the team title. Wakulla scored 58 points to take the runner-up spot, while the Maclay School girls were third with 67.

In the two-mile race for middle school girls, Maclay School sixth-grader Regan Hermeling took individual honors, outrunning runner-up Summer Williams of Florida State University School 14:52 to 15:26. But you need five runners to have a team in cross country, and Fairview was the only school to put five runners on the course. Led by Paris King (3rd, 15:30), Fairview won an unopposed team title, scoring a perfect 15 points.

Augusta Raa Middle School, a perennial contender in cross-country in the Leon County Schools' middle school competition, gave notice that they may be back in 2013. The first league meet was still ahead, scheduled for 4 September 2013 at Fort Braden, but at the Cougar Challenge Jacob Dodson and Benjamin Smith went one-two for the Rams, running 12:28 and 13:14. Smith had been in a dogfight for the runner-up spot, coming in just ahead of Maclay's Max Eastman (3rd, 13:16), Fairview's Joseph Jones (4th, 13:17), and Raa's Drew Feeley (5th, 13:17). With Dodson, Smith, and Feeley accounting for eight points, Raa went on to score 41, winning the team title. Maclay School made it into the runner-up spot just ahead of Fairview Middle, 61 to 62.
