Bearrentine and Williams wing their way to wins at Butterfly 5K

Lowndes High alumnus (c/o 2010) Jacob Bearrentine won Valdosta's first road race of the year, putting up a 22:48 to outrun 56 other athletes at Camp Cocoon's Butterfly 5K on a cool Saturday morning, 5 January 2013. Behind Bearrentine, a battle was brewing for best woman between Valdosta State student Audrey Williams and soccer coach Erin Foote. It came down to the finish line, but Williams prevailed over Foote 23:49.5 to 23:49.9, the two runners taking second and third place overall respectively. Kevin Langley (5th, 24:24) of Adel, Georgia was the fastest master in the race and Tifton's Gina Purvis (11th, 27:55) was the first female master.


Proceeds from the first year event went to benefit United Hospice Foundation's Camp Cocoon, a camp for children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 who have experienced the death of a loved one. The camp has been located in Toccoa, Georgia for ten years, but a Valdosta branch is planned for March, 2013.

Repeat wins for Linton and Showman at Bowlegs 5K

There isn't really a road-racing season. When all you need to stage an event is an open stretch of pavement and a couple of athletes willing to compete, it doesn't make any sense to get tied down by the calendar. So Gulf Winds Track Club's 29th annual Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship wasn't the first race of any season in Tallahassee, but it was the first race of 2013. Over a hundred runners lined up on Pottsdamer Street at 9:00 am on Saturday morning, 5 January 2013 to take advantage of the New Year of racing.


By the end of the first kilometer Stanley Linton, the defending champion, and Vince Molosky, the 2011 Bowlegs 5K champion, were setting the pace for the rest of the field. A few strides back, Peter Wood and Javier Zamparelli stalked the leaders. Behind Wood and Zamparelli, Maclay School coach Gary Droze and Bainbridge High distance runner Chase Harris ran side by side. During the second kilometer, Linton broke away from Molosky, opening up a five-second gap. Peter Wood continued to run in third, but Chase Harris dropped Gary Droze to move into fourth. Zamparelli faded, falling into sixth behind Droze.



Linton continued to steadily pull away, ultimately winning the race by nearly 200 meters with a 16:12. It was the fastest Bowlegs 5K since 2000, when Aaron Scheer ran 15:49. Molosky finished runner-up in 16:47. Chase Harris closed with Peter Wood to force a kickers duel for third place; Wood prevailed narrowly, 17:03 to 17:04. Gary Droze was the fastest master runner, finishing fifth overall in 17:28.


The Bowlegs 5K defending women's champion, Katie Showman, lost no time getting out front, leading the women's field through the first kilometer. Kristine Cox trailed, followed by Nancy Stedman, Kate Chunka, and Christina Greene. Over the next kilometer Showman continued to pull away, while Cox held on to second. Meanwhile, Chunka and Greene overtook Stedman. Never challenged, Showman cruised home in 20:19, successfully defending her title and finishing 14th overall. Cox was the women's runner-up, placing 18th overall in 21:36. Chunka and Greene spent much of the race fighting for third, but in final few hundred meters Chunka pulled away to beat Greene to the finish line, 21:58 to 22:03. 24th overall in 22:32, Nancy Stedman was the fifth woman finisher, and for the third year in a row the top woman master.


110 athletes finished the race, which raises money for the scholarship program of the Faculty and Friends Club of Florida State University.

In Valdosta, McLeod and Mazurkiewicz ring out the old year with new wins

With just two weeks left in 2012, runners in Valdosta, Georgia learned that they would have one more chance to race before the New Year--a 5K on a two-loop closed course around the grounds of Lowndes High School. So at 9:00 PM, just three hours before 2013, fifty athletes set out to get in another 3.1 miles of racing in 2012. Fitzgerald's Mark McLeod was the fastest; the alumnus of the South Georgia College cross-country team ran 17:58 to add one more win to his 2012 total. Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach Ryan Kelly took the runner-up spot in 18:11.  At 19:05, third place went to Tyler Thurman, a junior-year cross-country runner at Lowndes High School. Valdosta's David Burnett was fourth in 19:14, and Matthew Baun of St. John Catholic was fifth in 19:35. Baun recently finished fifth in the seventh annual Georgia Middle School State Cross-Country Championships. The fastest master in the field was Tom Phillips of Valdosta, sixth overall in 20:58. The first woman and top woman master was Martha Mazurkiewicz, 15th overall in 24:56.
