Wright Calhoun still dominates the Shamrock Jog & Jam 5K

As of Saturday evening, 24 March 2018, there have been eight annual Shamrock Jog And Jam 5K races in Americus, Georgia. Wright Calhoun had won half of them. A sophomore on the Columbus State University Cougars cross-country team, Calhoun won his fourth Shamrock 5K at the eighth annual running of the race, finishing almost 700 meters ahead of the next runner. His time, 17:08, was just a few seconds off the Shamrock 5K record of 17:05, set in 2014 by Calhoun himself. Americus master runner DeAnn Reid was the first woman in the race, placing fifteenth overall in 24:28.


Bryan Danley took the runner-up spot, running 19:53. A few meters behind Danley, Dustin Howard edged Austin Anthony for third, 20:03 to 20:04. Howard is an eighth-grader at Schley Middle School in Ellaville, Georgia, where he is the ace of the school's cross-country team. Austin Anthony is a senior cross-country runner at Schley County High. Hawkinsville, Georgia's Mitchell Sinyard, runner-up in the 2017 Shamrock Jog And Jam, was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 22:12.


Caitlin Mixon of Vienna, Georgia took second in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 24:36. Clarissa Cadogan of Americus was the third woman and 26th overall in 27:42.


67 athletes finished the 2018 Shamrock Jog And Jam 5K. The race benefits the Scott Law Foundation, which provides direct financial assistance to Sumter and surrounding county residents suffering from cancer or other medical ailments.

Wright Calhoun knocks another one out of the park at the Home Run 5K

Wright Calhoun was going, going, gone at the Home Run 5K in Americus, Georgia on Saturday morning, 3 June 2016. Running 17:20, the Columbus State University Cougar cross-country runner won the 3.1-mile race by 900 meters. Kimberly Dove of Byron, Georgia earned the women's title, placing sixth overall in 22:41. 47 athletes finished the fifth annual event.


With the win, Calhoun successfully defended his 2016 title in the race. Calhoun had also won the Home Run 5K in 2014, when he set the course record of 16:55. Jaren Hill, an alumnus of the Americus-Sumter High cross-country team, was runner-up in 21:09. Logan Collins of Americus took third in 22:18. Americus athlete Chad Bell was the first master runner and fourth overall finisher, running 22:18.


Charlene Pennymon of Americus was the first woman master and second female finisher, placing seventh overall in 23:05. Huntsville, Alabama master runner Sharon Steelman placed third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 28:38.


Proceeds of the 2017 Home Run 5K went to benefit the Americus Campus of the Methodist Children's Home of South Georgia.

Calhoun and Hay get S'more wins in Albany

Fresh from his first cross-country season at Columbus State University, Wright Calhoun won the Run For S'Mores 5K on Saturday morning, 17 December 2016. Calhoun covered the 3.1-mile course through the streets of Albany, Georgia in 17:03, finishing more than 300 meters ahead of the next runner. Alli Hay, a senior on the Pataula Charter Academy cross-country team, was the top woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 20:08. 68 athletes finished the race, which started and finished at Wild Side Running.


The runner-up spot went to Brian Miller, a former teammate of Wright Calhoun when the two ran for Southland Academy. Miller's time was 18:13. Trevor Cleveland, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, placed third in 18:54. Ben Phillips, a frosh on the same squad, edged Dennis Moore for fourth, 19:42 to 19:44. Moore was the first master runner in the race.


Deerfield-Windsor junior Camryn Bridges took second in the women's standings, coming in eighth overall in 20:36. Jen Perkins was the third woman and tenth overall in 21:11. Sarah Ostrander was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, eleventh overall in 21:42.

Calhoun and Harris are first in the Freedom 5K

South of Tallahassee, Florida in Wakulla Springs State Park, Wright Calhoun outran a field of 138 athletes to win the fourth annual Freedom 5K. Calhoun's time on the sandy 3.1-mile course was 17:48. Madison Harris won the women's title, placing sixth overall in 20:00.


Calhoun led the race almost from the very start, rolling up a lead of over 100 meters on Dan Baur, who finished runner-up in 18:12. Just months away from starting his first collegiate cross country season at Columbus State University, Calhoun had mostly positive things to say about the race.

"I thought it was a blast," said Calhoun. "The course was gorgeous. I really love the trees. I did run into a spiderweb, though."


It was probably one of the area's many golden orb spiders, familiar to anyone who spends time in the Big Bend's forests during the warm months. The 137 runners trailing Calhoun can be grateful that he knocked down the web for them. Calhoun didn't do anything to settle the sand for his pursuers, though. After a stretch of dry weather, the sand roads that made up much of the course were especially soft and difficult to run on.


"I was so loose it was like beach running," said Myles Gibson. Gibson, from Donalsonville, Georgia, was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in third overall in 19:01.

"That was brutal," concurred Brittney Skiles, a cross country and track coach at Truett McConnell University.


Skiles had led the women's field in the early going, before being caught by Madison Harris. "We ran together till about two miles, then she took off," said Skiles.


"Just past the two-mile mark," agreed Harris. "Coach had told me who she was, and I knew she was Margaret Wiedeman's coach, but that was all."

Mostly, though, Harris knew that Skiles was someone she wanted to beat that day. In the last mile Harris opened up a gap of nearly a minute on her way to finishing first in the women's division. It was Harris' third win in the Freedom 5K, and even with the bad footing her 20:00 time was her fastest performance yet on the course.


"I knew it was going to be sandy," said Harris. "But not that sandy!"


Skiles was second in the women's standings, placing tenth overall in 20:56. Alli Hay, a rising senior on the Pataula Academy cross country team, was the third female finisher and eleventh overall in 21:11.

Hosted by the Wakulla High Cross Country Boosters, proceeds of the fourth annual Freedom 5K went to support Wakulla High Cross Country team. "This is our major fundraiser of the year," said Wakulla High cross country coach Paul Hoover.


Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Calhoun and Shattles hit big at the Home Run 5K

Concluding his career as a distance runner for the Raiders, Wright Calhoun graduated from Southland Academy in May 2016. Calhoun heads to Columbus State University later in the year, but he isn't quite done running in Americus, Georgia. In fact, on Saturday morning, 4 June 2016, Calhoun won the fourth annual Home Run 5K, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17:26. Americus master runner Trina Shattles won the women's title, placing eleventh overall in 25:01.


Calhoun also won the Home Run 5K in 2014, giving him a perfect two-for-two record in the race. In the years when Calhoun didn't run, 2013 and 2015, Billy Calcutt grabbed the top spot. A rising senior on the Southland Academy cross country team, Calcutt ran 19:26 in the 2016 race, placing second to Calhoun. Schley County Middle School cross country runner Aaron Pinckard was third in 19:57. Gordy Bonner of Ellaville, Georgia was the top master runner and tenth overall in 24:25.


Ramsay Miller, a rising junior on the Lee County High cross country team, was second behind Trina Shattles in the women's standings, placing twelfth overall in 25:28. Albany, Georgia master runner Cathy Jones was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 27:28.

Calhoun and Reyes conquer the Kold in Americus

Coming off a victory a week earlier at the Albany, Georgia Nun Run 5K, Wright Calhoun won the fourth annual Kiwanis 5K Kold Run in Americus, Georgia on Saturday morning, 6 February 2016. The Southland Academy senior completed the 3.1-mile course in 17:32. Calhoun had also won the inaugural Kold Run in 2013; this time around he finished nearly 800 meters ahead of the next runner.


Ed Shattles of Americus was the top master runner in the race, placing second overall in 20:29. Dahlonega, Georgia master runner Rick Hayes took third in 22:50.


Americus athlete Yesnia Reyes captured the Kold Run women's crown, placing fifth overall in 23:17. Ryleigh Bell, an eighth-grader on the Southland Academy cross country team, was second in the women's standings, coming in eighth overall in 23:44. Southland sluggers score big at the Home Run 5K

2013 was a landmark year for the Southland Academy cross country program. The boys team captured the Raiders' first GISA state cross-country title, while the girls placed seventh. On 14 June 2014, the Raiders showed that they're poised for another highwater season this fall, putting four runners in the top seven at the Americus First United Methodist Church's second annual Home Run 5K.


Raider GISA All-State athlete Wright Calhoun won the race by nearly 200 meters. Calhoun's 16:55 shattered the event record of 19:45, set by Southland's Billy Calcutt in 2013. Hunter Kimball, a rising sophomore at Jones County High, finished second in 17:32. Billy Calcutt, the 2013 Home Run 5K champion and a rising sophomore at Southland, took third with an 18:14. Harrison Myers, a cross-country runner for Young Harris College, was fourth in 18:58. Southland rising junior Brian Miller placed fifth in 19:41. Gray, Georgia, master runner Buddy Davis was sixth in 20:02.


Jessica Childers of Leslie, Georgia, was the top woman in the field, finishing ninth overall in 22:12. Americus athlete Charlene Pennymon was the women's runner-up and the first woman master, running 23:06 for tenth overall. Southland freshman Alex Exum was third in the women's standings, 16th overall in 27:07.


46 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race, which started and finished near Americus First United Methodist Church. Proceeds of the Home Run 5K benefit the Americus Campus of the Methodist Home. The race was held in memory of a friend of the home, Jay Williams.

Victories in Albany for Calhoun and Oslund in the Love Run

Up north, high school and collegiate athletes spend the winter racing on indoor tracks--sometimes as small as eleven laps to a mile, wooden ovals with banked turns that could have been made for roller derby. In Georgia, though, by February the preps are looking at the start of outdoor track season. Even so, Wright Calhoun, a sophomore distance runner at Southland Academy in Americus, found time on the morning of Feb. 8 to lead a field nearly 300 runners around the streets of Albany, Georgia. It was the Heather Lanier Yeiser Love Run, and Calhoun won the first-year 5K in 17:42. Lee County High School math teacher Josh Fix was runner-up in 17:58. The fastest master runner in the race was Leesburg's Dennis Moore, who finished third overall in 19:22.


Darton College's Elena Oslund finished atop the women's standings by almost three and a half minutes, placing fourth overall in 19:52. Janie Plowden, a freshman cross-country runner at Albany's Westover High, was the women's runner-up, placing 21st overall in 23:21. Amy Cain was the top woman master in the race, 27th overall in 23:48.


The Love Run was in support of Heather Lanier Yeiser of Albany, a first grade teacher at Deerfield-Windsor School who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Yeiser was first diagnosed in October and is currently about halfway through chemotherapy. The race was sponsored by Wild Side Running of Albany.

Calhoun wins and Smoot sets record on Independence Day in Valdosta

Wright Calhoun may be looking forward to his sophomore year high school cross-country season this fall, but he isn't waiting till fall to race. On Thursday, 4 July 2013, the Americus, Georgia distance runner outraced a field of 163 to win Valdosta's fifth annual Independence Day 5K. Calhoun clocked 17:28 for the 3.1-mile run on Patterson Street from Five Points to downtown, a four-second improvement on his 17:32 runner-up performance in the 2012 Independence Day 5K. Devin Long followed Calhoun across the finish line, runner up in 18:06. Long, an alumnus of Texas's Schertz Steele High School and its cross-country team, is a cadet at the United States Military Academy. Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach Ryan Kelly took third, clocking 18:26. Adel, Georgia athlete Sean McConnell was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing eighth overall in 19:26.


Mary Alice Smoot, a rising senior at Valwood School, trimmed three seconds from Jordanne Helton's 2011 women's course record, establishing a new female standard of 20:13 for the Independence Day race. Smoot finished over 300 meters ahead of the runner-up in the female competition, Kelsey Morse of Valdosta. Morse was 22nd overall in 21:44. Alison Peters was third in the female standings, placing 23rd overall in 22:04. For the fourth straight year, Valdosta's Mary Smoot was the first master woman across the finish line at the Independence Day 5K. Smoot's 22:21 was good for 25th overall.

Calhoun and Golden leg it at Loop-the-Lake

Wright Calhoun's freshman year track season at Americus, Georgia's Southlands Academy was a month behind him, but he showed that he still had some running in his legs on Saturday morning, 1 June 2013, at the Lake Blackshear Loop-the-Lake 5K. Calhoun ran 16:46 to win the seventh edition of the 3.1-mile race, leaving runner-up Robert Bledsoe over a minute behind. Bledsoe, the 2013 Fire Ant Festival 5K champion and just out of track season at Irwin County HS, ran 17:58. Tift County High School cross-country runner Joshua Curry took third in 18:24. Ed Shattles of Americus ran 18:53 to finish as the first master runner.


Tifton's Ashlee Golden showed that she's ready to start her own high school cross-country career this fall,  finishing as the first female in the Loop-the-Lake 5K. Golden placed 14th overall in 21:50. Just behind Golden, Paula Rogers of Eastman, Georgia was the next female finisher, 15th overall in 21:58. 18th across the line, Heidi Taylor was third in the division with a 22:28. Cherie McDonald of Sylvester, Georgia was the first master woman finisher, coming in 38th overall in 24:19.


336 athletes finished the race through the grounds of Georgia Veterans State Park outside of Cordele, Georgia. Proceeds from the race went to benefit Graceway Recovery Residence. The race was timed by Event Technical Services of Sylvester, Georgia.
