May and Masterton fly for Gey

Luke May ran 17:33 to win the third annual Steven G. Gey 5K in Tallahassee's Innovation Park on Sunday morning, 7 November 2010. Michael Martinez placed second to claim the top master spot with a time of 18:11. In the women's division, Mary Masterton won a late duel for the title with Tiffany Roddenberry, 22:26 to 22:34.

It was a clear cool morning, the first after the "fall back" time change from daylight savings to standard time. May went to the front right away, eventually building up a 150 meter lead on Martinez. Masterton led the women early, building up a respectable lead by the halfway point. Roddenberry chased her down, though, and was setting the pace for the women's field during the final kilometer of the race. About 300 meters from the finish, heading up a gentle slope, Masterton passed Roddenberry for the final time and went on to win by 30 meters.

The race is conducted in honor of Prof. Stephen G. Gey (rhymes with "pie"), a former runners who is struggling with ALS. The race was formerly run from the Florida State University College of Law, but this year it was moved to the Innovation Park course, the same course used by the Bowlegs 5K Run For Scholarship (USATF #FL95008DL). The weather was not nearly as frigid as it had been for the 2010 Bowlegs 5K, but it was cool (mid-40s) and clear, a beautiful day for a late-morning run. The top three men and top three women each received cash awards--$50 for first, $30 for second, and $20 for third. Sometimes it pays to get up early.

  3. I always like your reports, Herb. And all these years, I have been pronouncing "Gey" wrong. It is such a wonder to have you here to keep us straight on topics like this!
