Hike Leon Sinks free on Veteran's Day

The United States Forest Service is waiving fees in certain day-use areas of the national forests in Florida this Thursday, 11 November 2010, in observance of Veteran's Day. Similar to the Forest Service's "Back to School Special" fee-free weekend in August, the only area in the Apalachicola National Forest where fees are being waived is the Leon Sinks Geological Area. However, this Thursday the weather should be absolutely perfect for taking a walk in the woods. Go early to beat the crowds and enhance your chances of seeing some wildlife. Even if you don't see a single squirrel, though, you'll still be treated to views of several sinkholes of the Woodville Karst Plain, including the majestic Big Dismal Sink. In the sinkholes the water of the Floridan Aquifer is exposed to the surface, much of the same water that rushes to the surface at Wakulla Springs to form the Wakulla River. You won't see that on the Appalachian Trail.

Elsewhere in Florida, the Ocala National Forest will waive fees in the Fore Lake day use area, the Farles day use area, the Lake Eaton Boat Ramp and Pier, and the Mill Dam Boat Ramp; Juniper Springs fees will be waived for veterans and members of the military and their families. In the Osceola National Forest fees will be waived at the Olustee Beach day use area.
