Myers, Zeiler win the Battle of Jackson Bluff at Palace Saloon 5K

Some 1200 runners came to the 2012 Palace Saloon 5K last Saturday morning, April 14. They all came to run 3.1 miles. Some came dressed as Elvis, or Evel Knievel, or beer mugs. Some came for the beer. More than a few came to race. For that group, the fight for the title went all the way to the finish line in front of the Palace Saloon, where Josh Myers of Jacksonville Beach narrowly prevailed over Stephen Cox, 16:07 to 16:09. Lindsay Zeiler successfully defended her title in the women's division, running a winning 17:20 just two weeks after her victory in the Springtime 10K.

This was the 38th annual Palace Saloon 5K. Like all but two of those years, the race started on Dupree Street, heading north. During the first mile the runners negotiated Municipal Way and Appleyard Drive, then turned east onto Jackson Bluff Road for the long, two-mile straightaway to the finish line. There were eight runners in the lead group when the race reached Jackson Bluff, paced by Vince Molosky. David Thomas, Stephen Cox, Josh Myers, Peter Wood, Charlie Johnson, Josh Cross, and Christian Minor followed closely. At two miles the runners began to climb the one hill on the course. Cox made his move on the uphill, stretching out the leaders. Cross dropped out of contention, then Molosky. When the spectators at the Palace saw the first runners cresting the hill, Cox was ahead.

But there was still a half mile downhill run to the finish line. As the runners headed down the slope, Josh Myers passed Charlie Johnson, moving from third to second. Then Myers set his sights on Cox. At the three-mile mark Myers took the lead and held it, thundering across the finish line with a 16:07 victory. Cox placed second in 16:09 followed by Johnson and Wood, each in 16:15. At 16:16, former FSU cross-country runner Christian Minor was breathing down their necks in fifth place. Maclay School track coach Gary Droze took top master runner honors, finishing 10th overall in 17:16.

In the women's competition Lindsay Zeiler had a few steps on Amy Hines when the race turned onto Jackson Bluff Road. Over the last two miles Zeiler stretched that out into many steps, finishing the race 60 yards ahead of Hines, 17:20 to 17:41. Lisa Johnson, the 2008 and 2009 women's champion of the race, placed third in 18:16. Thomasville, Georgia runner Mary Anne Grayson was the first woman master in the race, 56th overall in 20:08.

  2. Thanks, Joe! There's a reason this race has been around for almost 40 years now...and it's not just because of the beer!
