Shaw and McElroy go for a fast 5K Frolic at ARPXC

Avery ShawDesigned as a venue for championship cross-country meets, the Apalachee Regional Park Trail is starting to catch on as a site for open races. The 2011 Tannenbaum Trail 6K was the pioneer event in this regard. In the autumn of 2013 it was joined by the Run Wild 5K in September and the Trash Dash 5K in November. And the day after the Trash Dash, 17 November 2013, the FSU chapter of Alpha Delta Pi brought their Fall Frolic 5K to ARPXC.

Alexis McElroyThe Sunday afternoon race started about 1:08 PM. Florida State freshman Avery Shaw took the lead at about 800 meters into the run. Formerly a cross-country runner at Lennard High School in Ruskin, Florida, Shaw was unchallenged for the remainder of the 3.1-mile race, going on to win in 20:37. The top runner in the women's field, Alexis McElroy, was no stranger to ARPXC, having raced on the course earlier in the year as a Lincoln High School freshman at the FSU Invitational and the FHSAA District 3-3A Championships. This time McElroy came up a winner, staying ahead of Ashley Johnson and Torie Grey to finish as the first woman in the Fall Frolic 5K. McElroy was twelfth overall.

An excellent cross-country course doesn't necessarily translate to excellence in other areas of race management, though. Times and complete results are sadly unavailable. But here are the top ten finishers in the Frolic.
