Knockout wins for Mullery and Gelzinis at the Fight For A Cure 5K

Evan Mullery and Lauren GelzinisOn Saturday morning, 5 April 2014, 235 runners raced around the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee in support of the fight against Fanconi anemia. The fastest of the field was Evan Mullery, who completed 3.1 miles in 19:24. Right behind him was the first woman in the race, Lauren Gelzinis, who posted a 19:32. It was the Kidz First Fund's inaugural Fight For A Cure 5K.

The race started in the shadow of FSU's "Unconquered" statue, next to Campbell Stadium. Race day registration was a good two blocks to the east at Madison Social, but nobody seemed to mind the stroll. If anything, it was a good addition to a pre-race warm-up. At about 9:20 the runners were let loose. 800 meters into the race, Evan Mullery was setting the pace. Mullery, an FSU sophomore, had run cross country for Columbus High School in Miami, Florida. Another cross-country veteran trailed Mullery--Lauren Gelzinis, who had competed for Florida State and for South Fork High School. Sean Doran and Shaun Schneider held the spots behind Gelzinis.

Evan MulleryNear the three kilometer mark, as the leaders passed the Integration Statue on Woodward Plaza, the relative positions of the first four runners hadn't changed--Mullery then Gelzinis then Doran then Schneider. They weren't running in a group, but less than fifteen seconds separated them. The rest of the field was far back, out of sight. Lauren Gelzinis hung right behind Evan Mullery till the final kilometer. Circling Campbell Stadium on the way to the finish line, Mullery widened the gap, breaking contact with Gelzinis. Back at the "Unconquered" sculpture, Mullery crossed the finish line first in 19:24. Gelzinis followed, placing second in 19:32. Sean Doran was third in 19:40 and Shaun Schneider fourth in 19:47.
