If you look at the meteorological records, you'd have to conclude that April is a relatively dry month in South Georgia. Spring is well under way, so you'd expect a lot of warm, clear days. Saturday morning, 19 April 2014, though, was a lesson that climate is not weather. In Valdosta, Georgia, after a record 2.62" of rain the day before, the day was wet and cloudy, with the temperature never creeping above 63 °F. It wasn't sunbathing weather.But lousy conditions for sunbathing can be good conditions for running, and the fourth annual Justice In Motion 5K went on as planned at McKey Park in Valdosta. Lake Park, Georgia, athlete Ryan Kelly successfully defended his title in the race, running the 3.1 miles in 18:47. Jonathan Miller of Valdosta finished second in 19:39. Kaleb Henninger of St. Marys, Georgia, took third in 19:58.
Valdosta's Alice Smoot was both the top woman and the fastest master in the race, placing fourth overall in 22:27. Jennifer Beal-Alvarez of Valdosta edged Ansley Childree of St. Marys for the second women's spot, 25:45 to 25:48. The two runners were ninth and tenth overall.
38 athletes finished the 2014 Justice in Motion 5K. The race is hosted by The Haven, a Valdosta women's shelter. Proceeds from the race went to fund the Haven's rape crisis center and its outreach program.
