Didn't I say there would be big changes after the Palace Saloon 5K?As expected, Tallahassee's first and fastest 5K road race wrought havoc on the 2014 road 5K performance lists. Stanley Linton still holds the top spot, but Chris Lake vaulted to #2 with his 15:52 win at the Palace on Saturday morning, 12 April 2014.
I was really happy with it," said Lake. "I've been doing mostly 10K specific training for Rose City."
15:52 isn't bad for someone who says he's not training for a 5K. Zach Deveau's second-place Palace time of 16:12 wasn't too shabby either; it puts DeVeau third on the list of performers. Stephen Cox broke into the top ten for the first time in 2014; his 16:26 at the Palace puts him sixth. Bryan Koon also debuted in the top ten. Koon's 16:46 is not only the ninth time on the list, it's also the fastest 5K by a master runner on the Tallahassee roads so far in 2014. Marc Akbar posted a 16:48 at Palace to earn the tenth spot on this year's list. Palace performances are all over the men's top twenty.
A Palace performance is also at the head of the women's top twenty. Amy Hines ran 17:45--2014's fastest 5K time to date by a woman on the Tallahassee roads--to win the women's title at the Palace. Katie Sherron, currently #2 on the 10K list, moved up to #4 on the 5K list with her second-place Palace time of 18:42. Adrianna Piekarewicz also ran well enough at the Palace to pierce the top ten; her 19:04 is fast enough to put her at #8.May I quickly review the inclusion criteria?
- The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
- The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
- The race has to have published results
- I have to see the results
Ronald McDonald House's Red Shoe Run 10K and 5K in Southwood on Saturday morning, 19 April 2013, may just meet those requirements. I'll be there to make sure they actually run on the certified Turkey Trot courses. I don't expect either race to be as significant as the Palace in shaking up the lists, but you never know.
