Jemal LeGrand is a freshman member of the Florida State University swim team. While at Sagemont High in Weston, Florida, LeGrand won state title in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle. In 2012 he swam for Aruba at the Olympic Games in London. But on Saturday morning, 5 April 2014, LeGrand stepped out of the pool long enough to win Tallahassee's 7th annual FSU Autism 5K, running the 3.1-mile race in 19:38. Crawfordville, Florida, master runner Duane Evans finished runner-up in 19:46. Third place went to another master runner, Tallahassee's Michael Savage, who ran 19:54. FAMU philosophy professor Michael LaBossiere was fourth in 21:21.FSU freshman Lydia Ware won the women's title in the race, placing fifth overall in 21:48. Although Ware is a varsity swimmer for Florida State, she also was an 800 meter specialist for the Bishop Kenny High School track team in Jacksonville, Florida, from 2010 to 2013. The women's runner-up in the 2014 Autism 5K was Tallahassee's Julie Clark, who placed 12th overall in 23:54.
After years of running in Southwood, the FSU Autism 5K moved to the Northwood Center for the 2014 race. 137 athletes finished the 5K at the new venue, with another 55 completing an earlier one-mile fun run.
