Saturday, 12 October 2019, was too late for Talk Like A Pirate Day, which falls in September. It was much too early for Tampa's celebration of the fictional pirate Jose Gaspar, the Gasparilla Festival, which falls in February. But in Panama City Beach, Florida it was just the right date for the third annual Pirates Of The High Seas 5K. Jake Moore took advantage of the occasion, winning the race by nearly 400 meters in 17:33. Kristin Guirey was the top woman in the 3.1-mile race through Pier Park, placing eighth overall in 21:55. Guirey is an alumna of the cross-country teams of Rutherford High and Troy University. The 2019 Pirates 5K champion, Jake Moore, runs cross-country for White Plains High, a school near Anniston, Alabama. Moore wasn't the only White Plains Wildcat in the race. His teammate, Kayd Hightower, took second in 18:57. Both Moore and Hightower are in their junior year at White Plains. David Shearon, the first master runner in the race, finished just behind the two youths, placing third overall in 19:04.
Kelly Johnson was the first woman master in the 2019 Pirates 5K, the second female finisher and eleventh overall in 23:03. Alyson Buell took third in the women's standings, placing fifteenth overall in 24:28.
